Faith and the Sword—New Class Decks Headed Your Way!

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Greetings, Pathfinders.

We've got an exciting new announcement for you this week, but first, I want to talk about the characters from the new August release, the Paladin Class Deck. Meet the band:

First up is Koren. When the design team started kicking around paladin character concepts, I immediately pitched the idea for a self-sacrificing martyrish fellow, one who's always saving other people at cost to himself. Because the design team has a... quirky... sense of humor, Koren quickly morphed into a self-hating half-orc who follows Sarenrae. He's all about saving people from themselves. His roles allow him to branch out into undead slaying or to stick with his team. (Fun Fact: that last one, the Unflagging Companion role, was originally called Creepy Stalker. Editorial is so mean.)

Next we have my personal favorite, Raz the gnome. She's definitely a cavalier-like take on the paladin. She's inspired by a perennial RPG character of mine: a halfling paladin dog rider. Conveniently, I talk about her a bit on this podcast. From Raz's token card:

“Raz is the only gnome paladin she's ever met. Therefore, she's clearly the best gnome paladin there ever was. At an early age, Raz decided she wanted to be different from her mischievous kin. She did so by kicking bad guy butt and protecting the good guys.”

That tells you most of what you need to know. She's got a role devoted to helping people get stuff, and she's got a role named Dog Rider Knight. I'm not going to tell you what to do or anything, but Dog. Rider. Knight.

Last but certainly not least, we've got a fresh new take on the iconic paladin Seelah. This Iomedae-following sword-wielding lover of good and righteousness shows off her "lay on hands" ability in the Paladin Class Deck. For the uninitiated, Lay On Hands is a classic paladin ability—the paladin calls forth divine aid to heal someone with a mere touch, faith healer-style. In fact, Faith Healer is one of her roles, good for those who like supportive paladin builds. Unlike Raz, Seelah has no interest in loot, so she tends to ignore it in her endless search for justice.

You may have noticed that this deck features only three characters rather than the four featured in each of the first seven class decks. That's a change that you'll see going forward in the rest of the Class Deck line. Based on extensive player feedback, we've increased the number of boons in the deck. Each character can now get a greater range of worthwhile options to choose from while progressing through an adventure path. We think you'll be pleased with the results while still appreciating the variety of innovative characters that we present in these products.

Oh, and that news I foreshadowed so subtly earlier? CLASS DECK SUBSCRIPTIONS, Y'ALL. They're starting with the August release of the Paladin Class Deck. Check the details:

With your ongoing Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Class Deck subscription, we'll automatically send you each new Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Class Deck, charging your credit card automatically as we ship each product. You only need to sign up once, so you'll never need to worry about renewal notices or missed products! Best of all, each subscription shipment will give you a discount of 20% off the MSRP of that release. Items from your Class Deck subscription will be combined with your other Paizo subscriptions (including your Adventure Card Game subscription) to save money on shipping.

When you start an ongoing subscription, any existing preorders for products covered by your subscription are automatically cancelled (or if you've preordered more than one of an item, they'll have their quantity reduced by one). If you've already preordered any of the upcoming decks, you do not need to do anything special when you subscribe.

Exciting, right? Next week, you'll learn what the real Best Character Ever is, because I'm taking my turn at the helm.

Until next time, Pathfinders.

Looks awesome. Can't wait to see some skills and powers. Not long now though.

And subscribed.

If it matter's, in the My Subscriptions page, the Paladin deck is showing in the section "Items shipping with a later subscription shipment" rather than in the "Expected to ship early August 2015" section. Monk deck appears in the "Expected to ship early September 2015" section. My sidecarted Ekkie mat is in the "Expected to ship early July 2015" section.

It's Lem, right? The only explanation I can see for Lem having not been chosen so far is "Tanis told everyone else to lay off".

Dog Rider Knight! New band name. I call it!

This example of Seelah's awesomeness just further reinforces my argument from before.

I dunno. I'm not even convinced she's the best character *in the Paladin Class Deck*. I am pretty psyched to see Raz, and am curious if she's the first Class Deck character with a Cohort.

Also, I always figured that RotR Seelah's Hospitaler role showed off Lay on Hands; I wonder if this is different (or if she just gets it without needing to wait for her Role Card)

Glad I'm not the only one who was thinking about that.

Thanks for letting me know—I'm told it should be fixed now.

Sending subscriptions oversea and importing these costs additionally money, is there any sweetener included besides the class deck itself that makes me buy these oversea???

If not, imwill pick them up locally.

Same thing happened when I subbed for the class decks a few minutes ago - it's gone into "Items shipping with a later subscription shipment".

I wonder if Tanis will pick Flenta, Qualzar or Raz for her favorite character.

If you were at PaizoCon and played in the PFSACG scenarios, you may have had Tanis playing at your table. With Raz.

I would subscribe to the class deck sub, but I'm most likely picking these up at my local FLGS instead.

Dog Rider, very cool. Velociraptor rider, on the other hand...

Very interesting. Will there be 3-character v.2 editions of the previous decks e.g. Rogue?

Subscription price converted to Euro plus 19% EUSt comes to about 17 Euros. A class deck probably won't cost you additional shipment if sent with other subscription shipment, such as an adventure deck. I doubt you'll get it for 17 Euros locally.

Does Raz come with a Dog to ride (either just as a card in the deck, or as a cohort?)

BRAVO! Mike, Vic, Chad... we just love you.

As of this morning it's still happening...I have the paladin deck listed, but it's listed as "in sidecart," and it's not bundled with my August subscription items.

I may have to play Raz (a martial, yuck) just because the character design is so awesome. Even the art!

Paizo, y u make too many characters I want to play in my limited play time? T_T

What deity does Raz worship? She looks awesome, but I was hoping for a Paladin of Shelyn with the battlecry "YOU'RE TOO UGLY TO LIVE!"

Well, if that's not true for the ACG character, I may now have a new RPG character.

adds to the list of character ideas

Paladin is the only class that Trolls can't be. Now, you CAN get minotaur paladins riding raptors... [/WoW]

This was probably already answered previously, but regular PFACG subscribers get a discount on the class decks too, correct?

Looking forward to Raz.

Regular PFACG subscribers get discounts on the first set of class decks because there wasn't a subscription in place when they were published. Now that there's a second subscription, you only get the discount on the new ones if you are subscribed to the class decks line.

I am now subscribed! Woot for Seelah the bestest! (Besides Damiel ;) )

Instead of revised releases (which I don't think is very likely), I'm hoping for add-in packs for the original seven decks, probably from DriveThruCards, to provide better boon support to the old characters. There'd been talk in the community about doing something like that, but I don't remember if Vic or anyone ever chimed in about if they thought it was a good idea or not. (Hawkmoon would probably deliver a link if they ever did)

Even though it's not my most wanted class deck (can't wait for Alchemist!!!), I'm really looking forward to getting this deck just to see how the new format works out.

Most international shipments are weight-based, so shipping 2 decks will cost more than shipping 1... but not twice as much.

You can evaluate for yourself by putting one in your cart and selecting an address, then changing the quantity in your cart to see what changes. I did that for an address in Serbia* and found that shipping a single class deck or adventure deck currently costs $5.49 for standard shipping; shipping 2 decks costs $8.18.

*Chosen randomly; most of Europe will be similar.

If it doesn't make sense for you to subscribe, no worries—please go ahead and purchase elsewhere. I would recommend you preorder if you can, or at least let your retailer know you're going to buy from him, to increase the chances that they'll have stock for you.

Shipping only ONE adventure or class deck to Europe DOES NOT trigger any VAT or import tax... But if you buy TWO or more decks THEN you pay 19 % VAT for BOTH decks and higher shipping additionally.

Weird is that you pay ALSO 19 % VAT on the shipping costs as this is also a foreign service which is subject to VAT.

Just to let you - all Europeans - know!

When there is a sweetener included like a new promo card then you have to order/subscribe.- else there are cheaper options.

Scarab Sages

Always looking forward to new characters.

Really hope that, some day, these class deck characters get promo cards with the "Owner" trait...

...maybe with the class deck subscription. Some day. Maybe.

Super cool idea!

I am IN for that!

No. Please don't associate new promos with the class deck subscription. I already feel bad enough not buying half of my PFACG stuff from the local store where I run the Card Guild. Still buying the class decks from them is one of the only things letting me live with myself as a community tabletop gamer.

Exactly my thought, too!

Scarab Sages

It's better than getting promo cards put in products that are only tangentially related to the card game at all.

Calthaer wrote:

Not in my opinion. At least those products give me more things to actually buy from my FLGS and have a very low risk of becoming unobtainable any time soon. But then again, I'm also into the RPG and love using them in my current campaign, so I'd be the last person to complain about the Iconic Heroes figures.

This is exactly the route I'm taking too.

Silver Crusade

I'm planning on buying mine from the FLGS, too, so add my vote to the no promo list.

Well, that is not a must. Way back when the sub of the Skull and Shackles Character Add-On was mailed out along with Adventure Deck 2, I had not to pay any VAT or other taxes but had this nice green sticker on it that said (well not in this exact words) "free of any charge". So I don't worry about VAT. If they are charging now, I can still cancel the sub and buy them later here in Germany

Question: does the iconic heroes promo card valid for seelah as owner also carry over to the new two class deck heroes? Or is seelah still in advantage by one owner card?

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

Technically, under the standard rules, only the listed owner is the owner. In PFSACG play, though, any character of the appropriate class can treat that card as if they were the owner. If you want to adopt that as a house rule, it won't cause any problems.
