Ascendance Day

Here at Paizo, the end of convention season can seem like a holiday, enough so that it calls for a new holiday blog. The anniversary of Iomedae's successful venture into the Starstone Cathedral was only yesterday, and given the goddess's key role in the Mendevian Crusade that is so central both to Pathfinder Society Organized Play's Year of the Demon and the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path, it seems particularly appropriate to honor the Inheritor today.

Below, you will find a special Chronicle sheet that you can download and apply to a Pathfinder Society character. Iomedae's Ascendance Day is mentioned on page 249 of Pathfinder Campaign Setting: The Inner Sea World Guide as well as page 70 of Pathfinder Adventure Path #26.

To many, the Test of the Starstone represents the greatest of all challenges, yet for Iomedae it was one of three storied promotions in her rise from Aroden's herald to a goddess in her own right. On the 6th of Lamashan, the Inheritor's faithful observe the heroism of Iomedae's life before her moment of ascension and celebrate the anniversary of the apotheosis itself.

The celebration takes place in several stages. Early in the day, troupes of performers—as often passionate amateurs as professionals—stage morality plays featuring the Eleven Acts of Iomedae, the heroic near-miracles and sacrifices she made leading up to her trials in the Starstone Cathedral. Scripts vary by region, city, and even neighborhood, but despite differences in setting, performance medium, and word choice, the themes and morals are all the same.

As the day continues, the priests organize jousts and mock battles, allowing anyone to participate so long as she can demonstrate enough skill to not be a risk to herself or others. The winners of these contests then face tests of mental acuity such as solving riddles, deciphering philosophical quandaries, and answering questions of honor and justice. Those who prove themselves in both contests are awarded a white cloak—representing the Inheritor at peace—styled after Iomedae's own red garment to wear for the rest of the celebration. Feasting and singing follow the competitions, mirroring the jubilation that followed Iomedae's ascension. This is occasion for making pledges of friendship and forgiving enemies, and priests circulate about the crowd offering the Inheritor's blessing to those who do and providing a moment's counsel or mediation for those who need an extra nudge.

The celebration typically ends before midnight, and the following day the priests and previous day's champions gather up the blunted swords from the mock battles, sharpen them, and distribute them among the church's armory and those of like-minded organizations so that all may remain vigilant against evil and prepared to strike it down.

Am I missing something? The "Actor of Eleven Acts" is missing the usual "cross this off after using" component.

Too late, I'm applying it! :)

Noted. That text is going in.

Update: Change applied. Use the current version.

Does the cloak still work if any symbols of Iomedae have been overwritten (scribbled out most likely) AND is worn after being submerged in the blood of a horse? My master would like to know.

Harold, that would probably cause the phylactery of faithfulness component to go bonkers, but I imagine that for several Pathfinders, making the cloak buzz would be rather delightful. The crusaders of Mendev pray this is not the case.

I think the phylactery of faithfulness effect was added just to prevent that kind of thing.

Garble still angry they no let him ride goblin dog and joust with his face. Some day Kingdom of Zog will celebrate victory over this Starstone!... whatever it is.

Neat!

For the cloak, since it says it can work if "displayed prominently", does that mean it doesn't need to be occupying a magic item slot? My cleric of Iomedae would love this, but it'd be a downgrade from his cloak of resistance. :/

Speaking of which, would it be legal, after it becomes a mundane keepsake, to sell my existing cloak of resistance and pay to have that one enchanted as its replacement? Bit of a gold loss, but being able to truthfully identify my cloak of resistance as being an Ascendance Day Cloak. :D

The keepsakes and mementos from holiday boons are intended to be virtually "slotless," much like most other boons are. That's the principle reason why it can be displayed prominently (such as hung from the belt) instead of having to be worn.

I can foresee no problem with somebody using a holiday boon memento for later enchantment.

I always wanted to play a Hobgoblin paladin of Iomedae.

So is the Mayor going to turn into a giant snake thing?

I'm new to pfs so I don't really get how this works. So we can just print out a sheet for each character or can we only use this on one character regardless?

Only on one of your characters. I believe that holiday boons are explained in the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play.

YAY! Now I just have to see how long I can keep this new white cloak from getting all stained and covered in gore... *prestidig... **!SPLAT!** great! Everyone's a critic!

This is a lot better than those puny one-time bonuses to some meaningless checks. That cloak, for instance, isn't by any means overpowering but neat enough to actually use!

Nice work!

I'm a little uncertain: when do I have to choose to expend the cloak? I assume I choose to display it at the beginning of the scenario. What if I don't encounter any compulsion effects during that scenario? Is it still expended?

Yup:

For holiday boons, you must participate in a Pathfinder Society Organized Play session in order to attach the holiday boon to one of your characters. You may only receive one copy of the boon but may assign it to any one of your characters during the dates specified on the boon. It does not have to be the character you play during that session.

This boon will be great for my bard!

I can't wait to wear my shiny new Ascendance Day Cloak at the Hellknight's Feast, and forever after!

Now the only real decision is which character to assign this to.

I can't see the Taldan Twins (Magnus and Talia) wearing it, even though both are LG (Paladin and Oracle, respectively), as they wouldn't be worshiping the Chelish upstart. I could see Angelo Gaius wearing it (though he's LN), with his Chelish background. Someone could have forced him to participate. Silbeg Cailean, my Andoran rogue for sure would participate... after all, it is just a party, right? As for Jayne Munny... he'd not have bothered.

It is just that pretty much all of my boons have ended up on Silbeg's stack, and I don't play him that often (something about the rogue not being all that effective?). Then, again, he's scheduled to be going to the Hellnight's Feast on Sunday... may suit him well.

Can characters taking part in the PBP gameday get this chronicle? And if so, would it be applied now, or when the pbp is finished? I ask because the PBP I'm in has the only Iomedae worshipper I have, and is not likely to end before the end date for this boon.

You are participating in a Pathfinder Society scenario between the dates mentioned on the blog, so it sounds good to me. Just ask you GM if (s)he would prefer that you wait for a scene to finish before acquiring the cloak or if it's alright to acquire it immediately.

You have no idea how much fun it is for my Chelish characters to rib Iomedean Paladins over this fun fact.

How often can you get the boon? Only once, or for more than one PC?

This was answered above, but you can only ever get this chroncile sheet once, by playing (or GMing) Pathfinder society in the specified time.

You get to apply one sheet TOTAL to any ONE of your characters.

Grand Lodge 4/5

That's a pity. I could use this on my bard and my paladin.

I'm on the fence about whether or not I should snag this for the character I'm playing tomorrow. On the other hand it's a blessing from Iomedae, and he worships Lao Shu Po... but couldn't this be considered stealing a blessing from Iomedae, which could make sense for an inquisitor of a goddess of thieves?

He should have stolen the cloak from a legitimate contest winner at the festival...

He could have been acting in one of the morality plays to distract the crowd while his associates picked their pockets.
