Organized Play Thoughts

Three-day US holiday weekends brings a plethora of conventions, especially in inclement weather months when indoor hobbies reign supreme. I just got back from GenghisCon in Aurora, Colorado, and leave tomorrow for Mace West in Asheville, North Carolina. The advantage of attending mid-sized shows comes in having time to focus on the community and interact with attendees on a personal level. Some of my favorite moments come from running games. Watching a player succeed at a skill or discover a bit of lore energizes me! Talking tips and tricks with other GMs allows me to take bits for my own toolbox. There are many facets of our organized play program that I enjoy working with, but interactions with our community usually tops the list.

Pathfinder Battles: Undead Hoard

Yes, yes, I know. That's not the right version of "horde." But hear me out! No army of undead is complete without a veritable dragon's trove of minion figures to inundate the battlefield with. So while the minis represent a horde of undead, you, dear reader, are going to amass a hoard of these phenomenal figures from the forthcoming Pathfinder Battles: Ruins of Lastwall set from WizKids (now due out in May).

February 2019 Starfinder Society Releases

February's scenarios begin the lovely countdown to what I like to call "Convention Season" which, for the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild, really kicks off at Origins. Luckily, February's scenarios also provide an excellent new recruitment option to our GMs in the field, and a scenario that continues a plotline many players have (rather vocally) expressed interest in. So, how about we dig into this month's scenarios!

New Scenarios: Repairing Old Damage

This week marks the anniversary of my sixth year working at Paizo and overseeing the organized play content development. Perhaps it's fitting then that not only do this month's Pathfinder Society scenarios deal with ancient places, but they also pertain to subjects that intrigued me even before I moved to Seattle to share adventures with so many groups worldwide: archaeology and the sorcerer Hao Jin.

Pathfinder Battles: Hail the Living God!

This week's preview of Pathfinder Battles: Ruins of Lastwall examines the faith of one of Golarion's newest deities. Fewer than 50 years ago, the masked man known as Razmir appeared in the River Kingdom of Melcat, and declared himself a god after having passed the Test of the Starstone. Since that fateful day, he has raised a nation in Melcat's place that bears his name—Razmiran—and stretches all the way to the shores of Lake Encarthan. All who live there are required to worship him and pay harsh tithes to his church. Because PCs are likely lining up to join his growing cult, we thought we'd give them some minis to use!

Playtest is over, so what’s the plan?

We closed the official Pathfinder Playtest in December and are well on the way to finalizing the final manuscript for the Core Rulebook. Now that we are close to locking and loading what Pathfinder version two looks like, the organized play team is revisiting our surveys from this fall and using them to finalize decisions as to what the new version of Pathfinder Society looks like.

Pathfinder Battles: So Many Bugs!

Paizo is closed today due to inclement weather (better safe than sorry), but that won't keep me from showing off a few new figures from the forthcoming Pathfinder Battles: Ruins of Lastwall set, due out in April. I'll keep the commentary short, however, since everyone is working from home.

The Tyrant's Grasp Player's Guide has been Loosed from its Prison!

The free Tyrant's Grasp Player's Guide is now available! Troubled times lie ahead for the nation of Lastwall, and the root of these troubles lies in the small frontier town of Roslar's Coffer. A handful of heroes are caught up in these dire events, inadvertent bearers of legendary power destined to save or doom the world. Lastwall is known for its valiant paladins, pious clerics and warpriests, and brave fighters. Yet many other types of characters—including resourceful rangers, cunning rogues, powerful wizards, and canny inquisitors—are appropriate for the Tyrant's Grasp Adventure Path. This player's guide contains plenty of spoiler-free advice to prepare characters for the challenges to come.

February Update—More Sanctioning, Spotlights, and Conventions!

For the past month, the organized play team worked on quite a few projects, from brainstorming what the Pathfinder Society looks like going forward, to monthly scenarios, to convention planning, and more. In a quest to provide as much content we can for Pathfinder Society players, the developers pulled together another bout of sanctioning, this time focusing on Seers of the Drowned City and War for the Crown. For the details, I turn to Michael Sayre.

Pathfinder Battles: Embracing Darkness

Well, we're at the halfway point of our series of blogs previewing the contents of the forthcoming Pathfinder Battles: Ruins of Lastwall prepainted plastic miniature set from WizKids. I've shown off the crusaders of Lastwall and their celestial allies, the agents of the lich lord known as the Whispering Tyrant, and the extraplanar exemplars of balance. Today we take a look at a handful of creatures that aren't necessarily involved in the conflict between the tyrant and the people of Lastwall but who nevertheless have embraced the forces of darkness.
