News Flash! Adventure Card Guild Gets Retail Incentive Program!

We interrupt your regularly scheduled Adventure Card Game blog to announce some exciting news! Last September, the Pathfinder Society unveiled a Retail Incentive Program for the Roleplaying Guild, aimed at rewarding purchases made at Friendly Local Game Stores or other retail establishments that offer Pathfinder Society space for games. At the time, we indicated that we'd look at options for an Adventure Card Guild version. The RPG Incentive Program concludes its fourth month in a few days, and it has proven well-received by players and stores alike. We are now pleased to announce the launch of the Adventure Card Guild version of the Retail Incentive Program.

Elementals Armed to the Teeth

It's been about a week since I returned from my sixth SCARAB, a delightful 4-day gaming convention in Columbia, South Carolina that I've been attending since before I started working at Paizo—and it's now one of the biggest Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild events worldwide. Each year it's been a great experience, and this year was no exception. I've definitely returned with some fun stories. I'll fondly remember the high-level group of adventurers who navigated a dungeon almost entirely by repeatedly casting augury, and the high-level group that nearly decided to throw both major NPCs under a bus and declare themselves queens of a small village makes for a thrilling tale. I can't forget the giantslayers who neither understood giant nor could identify a peryton, referring to instead as a "deer-headed marmot-squeezer." Perhaps best of all was getting through an entire scenario without rolling initiative because we decided that throwing a immense rival party on another plane of existence was a much more fun alternative to raiding someone's home. Thank you Del Collins II, Matt Polkowsky, and the SCARAB crew for putting on a great event, and thanks to David Shaw, Amanda Plageman, Brent Gass, Matt Beebe, Leslie Foster, Chris First, and many others for some great games.

Servants of the Mantis God

Alright folks, looks like I made it to round two. I am sure that Erik being out of the building has nothing to do with it! This week will be a treat, as long as you haven't recently done anything to anger He Who Walks in Blood. If you don't know who that is, then that is a start, but not likely to be a full proof out.

Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Qadira, Jewel of the East (PFRPG)

I Get a Little Help From My Friends

We've all been there, whether by seeing it in a movie, reading it in a book, or experiencing it in your favorite tabletop adventure: the protagonists stride into the throne room, where the regal monarch greets them and says, “Hail, noble adventurers. Long have I sought heroes to assist me with this plot hook, and you may be the saviors I need.” That treatment may work well in a European-fantasy setting awash with minor kingdoms and desperate NPCs, but in Qadira, everyone knows somebody; there's rarely any need for a regional governor to rely on some no-name group of 9th-level adventurers, much less have any motivation to entrust them with important tasks. Whether one's the soul of courtesy or a boor busting into a trade prince's parlor demanding news of the nearest dungeon, an unknown adventurer's almost certain to receive the same response: “Who the hell are you?”

Avoiding Scourges Like the Plague

It's plague season! And that means the flu is whipping through your friendly game design community like a desert sirocco. But I'm still upright, so I'm going to talk to you about the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game's manifestations of the plagues of Osirion in Mummy's Mask: scourges.

Pathfinder Society in Spain!

We are already halfway through the month. Doesn't seem like time should fly so fast! Before you know it, PaizoCon 2017 will be upon us. This is a big year, as it is the 10th anniversary of PaizoCon. Putting together the PFS schedule, along with that at Gen Con, and am extremely enthusiastic about what the team has in store for the second part of Season of Plundered Tombs and Year of the Stolen Storm.

Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Qadira, Jewel of the East (PFRPG)

Peoples of Qadira

Although residents of the Inner Sea region often think of Keleshites as a monolithic people, the reality is a lot more complex. The Empire of Kelesh has made efforts to encourage a unified Keleshite identity, but talking about "Keleshites" as if they were a single culture (which residents of Avistan, especially, tend to do) is about as accurate as talking about "Avistani" (which residents of Casmaron, to be fair, also tend to do). Just as the Chelaxians tend to have very different cultural practices from the Ulfen and Varisian customs and history differ greatly from those of the Shoanti, the various cultures that make up the Empire of Kelesh have widely varied practices and histories. The average resident of the major cities of Kelesh is of mixed heritage, but in less urbanized areas, people still practice traditions that date back five millennia or more.

How the Afghanistan Principle Affects Game Design

I'm big on game design rules. For example, you can see me talk about ten (or so) of them in my PAX Dev video lecture Ten Rules About Writing Rules. In this blog, I want to talk about one rule of mine that gets quoted a lot, and its effect on game design in the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.

A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That!

Welcome to the New Year! We took a hiatus from the blog the past few weeks as the team took some time off to recharge the batteries and spend time with family and friends. But vacation time is over and now we are back, jumping in and getting things done. So this blog is a bit of a hodgepodge and includes some kudos, some updates, and lots of information.

Pathfinders of Death

A dark wind blows through the Paizo offices (or at least through mine) on this chilly January afternoon, but that wind brings good portents of something very, very evil. Four of our favorite Pathfinder iconic heroes are coming to the world of the Kingdom Death: Monster nightmare horror miniatures game, so I'm taking the opportunity of today's usually minis-filled publisher preview blog to tell you all about it, because honestly, I'm super excited about this project!
