Paizo at Gen Con 2024!

Hello, ‘Finders! Gen Con opens in two short days, and we’ve got a host of exciting announcements about what we’ve got going at the show, from show floor exclusives to live shows, panels, and more!


Places!

Coming to Gen Con? There are a variety of places to find Paizo at the convention—whether you’re looking for demos, Organized Play, signings, or good old fashioned shopping!

Paizo is happy to be returning to Booth 203 in the Exhibitor Hall! We’ll have tables and shelves stocked with products new and old—including print copies of the Starfinder Second Edition Playtest Rulebook and sketch covers of all four remastered Pathfinder Core rulebooks! And, with Wayne Reynolds and Kent Hamilton on-site at the booth, you can get those books signed by their cover artists at Gen Con!

Looking for Organized Play? Paizo has an even bigger slice of the Sagamore Ballroom this year, taking Bays 3, 4, and 5 to offer over 80 tables of Pathfinder Society, Starfinder Society, Paizo Board Games, and Starfinder Second Edition Playtest Scenarios! Build characters using Demiplane’s Pathfinder or Starfinder NEXUS at our Digital Character Creation Station and jump right into a game! Play a demo of Pathfinder Second Edition or the Starfinder Second Edition Playtest on Foundry VTT! Also, we are excited to announce that there will be a satellite retail space in the Sagamore Ballroom this year, stocked with Core books, flip mats, minis, and more!

If you want to dip your toes in a shorter game, Paizo has demo tables in Hall C, as well as tables at Syrinscape’s space in the hallway between the ICC and Lucas Oil. Drop by any of these tables for a short, sweet introduction to Pathfinder or Starfinder!

With the launch of the Starfinder Second Edition Playtest, the Starfinder team is thrilled to get player feedback on the rules. This panel will elaborate on how design choices were made for the playtest, what the design team is interested in hearing about, and how your feedback helps shape the future of Starfinder Second Edition!

Pathfinder: A Remastered Retrospective – 3 p.m. EDT at Gen Con*

The release of Pathfinder Player Core 2 at Gen Con concludes the remastering of the core rules engine for Pathfinder Second Edition. Join the Pathfinder design team as they discuss the remastering process and what’s coming up for Pathfinder.

*All panels taking place on-site at Gen Con will be recorded and uploaded on our YouTube channel after the show!

Here’s hoping that one of those board game announcements is that the upcoming Kickstarter Pathfinder Quest project is actually a modular system. I’m hoping it might be something like a replacement for the Pathfinder Card Game. And maybe have its own Pathfinder Quest Society organized play. It would be a great way to introduce people to Pathfinder in something that most everyone is familiar with.

And I really want one of those play mats!! Maybe you can “accidentally” lose a box and end selling the extras on the website…

How much later? Are we talking same day or the following week after folks get back home from GenCon? Asking because I took work off to watch what I thought was gonna be live-streamed seminars like it was these past few years. If it's not getting uploaded the same day, I would like to know so I can change my plans.

Monster Core 2 is almost inevitable. There's going to be new monsters beyond the APs and the LO books, and they're going to need a book to put them all in.

I'm also hoping for a PC3, just to grab Magus, Summoner, Thaumaturge, Psychic, Gunslinger, Inventor, and.... no I think that's all of them... to give them a once over and make sure that things work well, maybe flesh some things out. I mean, it would also be nice to have how Arcane Cascade works without spell schools in a book instead of in an errata/FAQ...

Regardless, I hope everyone has an amazing time at GenCon! I'm prepping to run Rusthenge tonight, so we'll be thinking of y'all. (Not really. We're focused on clearing out the last of [REDACTED] before moving on to [ALSO REDACTED].)

Maybe not a PC3 per se, but something like a revised Advanced Player's Guide since the remaining classes don't really fit the definition of "core", to the point that some GMs might not allow them.

Oh! On Gen Con's website, the "A Drift Through Time" info/tickets page lists "GM(s): Rue Dickey", which seems incorrect

Personally I'm hoping for a monster ancestry book, or something like a more Halloweeny howl of the wild - all the spooky, semi-villainous or misunderstood options. Friendly harpies, benevolent necromancers, guardian gargoyles, whatever. Although that'd be unlikely to be announced anytime soon.

First new announcement was Starfinder Galaxy Guide, coming in May. It will have six new ancestries (Astrazoans, Dragonkin, and Kalo were confirmed), and will generally be a setting update.
Starfinder Class playtest for Technomancers and Mechanics is coming in 2025, likely very early because I'm pretty sure they said those two would be in the core book.
Confirmed Starfinder Player Core, GM Core, and Alien Core, but no details.

Talked about War of Immortals, but nothing new (that I caught).
Talked about Divine Mysteries, teased a couple of archetypes and art.
Talked about Tian Xia Character Guide, mentioned archetypes (Medicine Seller, Starlight Sentinel (aka Magical Girl)), ancestries (Water Buffalo minotaur, Moon Eater Iruxi), and familiars (my notes aren't great for these).

Next PF Adventure is Claws of the Tyrant, but will be an anthology of 3 disconnected mini adventures, but all in the Gravelands.
First AP next year is Spore War, newly described as the "Elf AP" like how Triumph of the Tusk is the "Orc AP".
AP after that will be a low-level (starting at 1) "Vampire AP" called Shades of Blood.

Next Lost Omens is Rival Academies, detailing Six magical academies in Golarion. Narratively is set in a conference between the six schools in Sarkoris where they have a, ahem, "friendly" competition killing demons. Will have an update to the Runelord archetype and Sin Magic in general. They didn't outright say it, but it sounds like it will update a lot of Secrets of Magic lore.

The last thing mentioned was Pathfinder Quest. As described, it sounds like "what if Pathfinder, but no GM and is Board Game". Crowd funding campaign got moved to next spring instead of this fall.

Slight correction they said they wanted those 2 classes available when the Core Rules released, but they are in an unannounced book coming in early 2026.

I’m kind of disappointed by this. I’ve wanted a book covering the new version of magic schools since they were announced for the Remaster but six just seems disappointingly small. Hopefully maybe each academy will have multiple curricula for each (aka, schools). Like maybe the Magambyaa will have a school for each of its branches. Or maybe they’ll be a section covering academies that couldn’t attend but sent summaries detailing how their academy works. And I hope all of the crunchy, player focused parts are consolidated for each academy. One of the frustrating things with the Lost Omens books is there can be a huge amount of fluffy, world building text and then suddenly there’s rules for a feat or a new item. It would be nice if that was all gathered in one section of the book.

I asked if there would be an inquisitor class in one of the panels... and I actually got an answer!

It turns out there are plans to making it a new archetype of the ranger class: the vindicator. Imrijka will return under this. I think it's a cool way to rework it since 1e had builds where you can get feats based on your favored weapon.

So, it looks like everyone is back now. Will the videos of the GenCon seminars get uploaded now? Please? Many of us never get to go to GenCon and these videos are often our only means of “attending”.

It was the Godsrain panel on Friday.

Inquisitor as an archetype of the Ranger (or would it actually be a Hunter's Edge?) actually makes sense. Hunt Prey goes to hunting enemies of the church.

Wait, does this mean Vindicator will likely be in the War of Immortals book? That's awesome!

A lot of Paizo employees came back home sick from the convention, so there have been more delays than expected on stuff that were supposed to be released post Gen Con. At least, that's what I heard through the grapevines.
