Once More Into the Vaults!

Just north of the coastal lumber town of Otari lie the swampy reaches of Fogfen, a mire nestled in the depths of a seaside forest that would have had a notorious reputation for being the dangerous haunt of monsters even without the presence of the looming tower known as Gauntlight. At first glance simply a lighthouse, the tower stands amid a ruined fortress, its heights looking out over the tree line at the coastline and town to the south. To those passing by, its position in a landlocked swamp is curious, even nonsensical, but its light’s sinister use is not for the guiding of ships through troubled waters.

For where Gauntlight shines, the monsters rise.

Of course, those who have played through Pathfinder’s Abomination Vaults Adventure Path already know the secrets that lie within the mysterious Gauntlight and have explored the sprawling dungeons that wait below its ruins—the eponymous Abomination Vaults. These dangers, mysteries, treasures, and secrets shall now be revealed to a new category of hero, however: those built for the fifth edition of the world’s oldest roleplaying game!

This new hardcover edition of the classic Abomination Vaults Adventure Path has been rebuilt to take full advantage of the 5E ruleset, giving players an entire megadungeon to explore alongside a richly realized local town to live in. Wish this was converted to Pathfinder 1e instead of 5e. :(

Hi there! Curious to know if the 5e conversion will have a premium Foundry module as well? I'd love to run this for my players on FVTT! :)

The fact that this post says "5E" once, in the third paragraph and doesn't use the term "Dungeons and Dragons" at all really feels like a missed opportunity. Maybe they're not allowed to, I dunno.

It's just odd to me that the post isn't yelling from the mountaintops "This is the first Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition product Paizo have released!"

I know there's the whole OGL thing, but this feels so overly cautious and subdued.

I wonder if we'll get more 2e Pathfinder content in 5e format?

Also I know this is EXTREMELY wishful thinking but I continue to pray to the Gods that one day we'll get a Bastardhall Superdungeon release for both 2e Pathfinder and 5e D&D.

Part of the complicated nature of OGL stuff is that there are some things you're not allowed to say for trademark or other reasons. The phrase "Dungeons and Dragons" is one of those things.

"Overly cautious and subdued" is the name of the game when working this closely with OGL content and the world's oldest Roleplaying Game... less so on idle messageboard posts but very much more so for official marketing copy, like you see upstairs in the actual blog post.

To add to what James said, it is technically NOT the first product for that ruleset we have made. When we remade Kingmaker, we had a 5e version.

I get ya. It's an unfortunate market reality. Y'all's older "The Abomination Vaults Comes to 5E!" post really got the point across right from the title. Different times.

Anywho, I'm still super jazzed for the actual product. I've got a group that I've been hoping to get onto Paizo's side for a while and I think this'll be a good stopgap on the path of "I don't want to learn a whole new system".

Also Mr. Jacobs I have a dream. A dream about how two big RPG companies defied everybody’s expectations and preconceived notions. A day where Age of Worms - possibly the greatest creation known to man - will be re-released in a hardback format. Perhaps one for Greyhawk 5r and one somehow ported to Golarion for PF2. I know the word isn’t so good so it’ll never happen for a thousand business and personal reasons. How we have all fallen.

Has “world’s oldest” replaced “world’s greatest” in the D&D marketing lingo, or was that a cheeky touch?

From what I remember, Paizo have been using "world's oldest" when referencing 5e for some years now.

as seen on this snippet from the 2019's crowdfunding for Kingmaker, that had a "5e Bestiary".

While "greatest" is subjective and could change, "oldest" will never change, unless someone manage to go back in time. :P

Yeah, we have indeed been using "world's oldest" for some time. Also, "greatest RPG" is only accurate to me if I'm talking about Pathifnder, Starfinder, and Call of Cthulhu. ;)
