Hi, I Wrote the Pathfinder: Fumbus Comic

Wednesday, April 14, 2021

Is there a more elegant way to title this post? Probably, but this is the most direct.

Hey there, my name is Fred Van Lente, and I’m thrilled to join the Paizo community by writing the Pathfinder: Fumbus one-shot comic book currently (or about to be) Kickstarted. I’m best known for writing comics like Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel Zombies, Archer & Armstrong, Cowboys & Aliens, Action Philosophers (currently in a Kickstarter for a color version itself), but my very first published book was an RPG supplement for Call of Cthulhu, The New Orleans Guidebook, so it’s been very cool to come back to my roleplaying roots.

I am a pretty avid TTRPGer myself. I’ve got a monthly game I run and I’m in a weekly group where we rotate the games and gamemastering duties. (Both currently Zoom-based, alas.) Pathfinder is one of the systems I’ve most enjoyed playing; in this photo I am with Rhys, my sea elf druid who made it to 7th level in the Skulls & Shackles campaign. This watercolor I’m holding was painted by my fellow player and accomplished cartoonist, Alex Cox. Hey Paizo, you ever need another iconic druid, I submit this handsome lad for your approval.

We also ran We Be Goblins! in my weekly group (I was Chuffy Lickwound, whose face might make you sick, but whose knife is awful quick) so it was cool to bring to life Fumbus, everyone’s favorite goblin alchemist, in a new adventure that is the next installment of the long-running Pathfinder comics series—but you don’t need to be familiar with the previous adventures of Seoni, Merisiel, Valeros and friends to enjoy this one. And in addition to the graphic novella itself, there’s a lot of neat new playable goodies* in the back of the book for all your goblin alchemy needs.

So, if that sounds like something you’d be into, head over to the Kickstarter campaign and pledge! And once again, happy to be here—thanks for having me.

*Character options in Pathfinder: Fumbus were made by Paizo and are pre-approved for use with the Pathfinder Society Organized Play program!

Wow nice to see a new comic.

If isn't too late, I think it would be hilarous if there was a "Fumbus?! We thought you were dead!" scene somewhere.

EDIT: Wait, which was old PF 1 Alchemist? I thought it was this guy?

EDIT: Damiel is the one I was thinking of, that had an "accident" when second edition arrived.

ooooh! Huzzah!
Went for the 3 pack because I couldn'T choose!
(And the fact it comes with an NPC Battle Card and a d20 helped the choice.)

Already funded.

Quite looking forward to this!

I appreciate the efficiency of this article's title.

Yay, Fumbus comic!

Unfortunately it's through Dynamite so that's gonna be a nope from me.

Rysky, would you be able to elaborate on that? I know next to nothing about comics publishing.

They support Comicsgate, a spinoff of Gamergate.

When that came to light they lost some good talent, Gail Simone prominently, and for damage control issued a statement on inclusivity that "stopped short of an apology" as an article eloquently put it.

Took me the better part of a minute of study to realize that the candidate new Druid Iconic isn't actually impaled with that spear.

I am surprised Paizo would use such a company.

Looked at the Kickstarter, curious about the comic -- there's no dialogue in the examples.

Is that by design, or has the dialogue not been added in yet?

Not sure whether to kickstart based on concerns raised in this thread, waiting to see what the official word is.

It's relatively common to remove dialogs in comics preview, to not spoil the story too much, while still showing off the art.

As someone who owns all of the other Comics and even has the posters from them framed on my office wall, you can bet you sweet green cheeks I'm backing this project.

Anything to get new fiction, comics, and general stories for the Pathfidner world is good with me or as others might say... HUZZAH!!

I didn't want to be the one to bring it up, but yes, I've cut out all Dynamite from my comics diet for this very reason. I was hoping the long lapse between series meant a new licensee, but that's apparently not the case.

That said, I'm glad new Pathfinder comics still exist at all, and FVL is an old hand in the business with a long list of credits, so it's a low-risk project for those who do choose to back it.

Yeah, as a long time fan of the comics I'd really like to back this, but not while Dynamite is involved. Sucks, but that's just the way it goes, I guess.

Question for the Dynamite Team if it could be relayed to them:

Will these comics come with a fold-out poster like the other Pathfinder Comics? I purchased every comic so far and have the posters framed in my gaming room and wondered if this will also include said poster.

Questions for Dynamite are best asked directly on the Kickstarter FAQs page.

There is not an encounter in this comic, as the rules within are really geared more toward players than GMs. As for whether or not there are poster options in the kickstarter that aren't directly taken from the comic, that's a question for Dynamite, as Aaron has said.

I'm just glad Pathfinder Comics aren't dead.

I just finished rereading all my hardcovers.

Will there be a way to access the game content in a PDF format? Whether via the kickstarter or after?

If it's considered official content, AoN might have it on the srd. It will be OGL at the very least, so it should be found online one way or another.

EDIT: In fact...

I figured it would be, but I thought that in order to legally use something in PFS, you had to supply the hard copy of the material (ie physical copy of the book), you had to have a watermarked copy of the material, or you had to have a PFS document noting that you have access to the material (such as a chronicle sheet). I would assume they would make a PDF of anything that is PFS legal so that it can be watermarked, but ultimately I wouldn't mind backing the project, I just don't want the physical copies & I didn't see anything about a PDF copy of the comic on the kickstarter.

Oh right... hum. I know that AP stuff you don't need to have the AP book, only the chronicle... But this is not an AP/Adventure. Dunno how they will do it. I guess they will explain how it will work closer to release.

So I was reading the Kickstarter's Forum; apparently DE is not doing a digital copy, which absolutely sucks. All of my PF2E materials are PDFs, & it looks like we will have to resort of a physical copy & the internet for the rules.

Absolutely loved the comic! Glad to see the continuation of the previous comics and hope this leads to more in the long run. Also the dungeon presented in the comic was awesome, love the concept!
