Prepare for the New and Improved Free RPG Day!

July 25, 2020

Free RPG Day works with top RPG Publishers to create the can’t miss RPG event of the year at hobby game stores around the world.

Participating retailers receive an abundance of new and exclusive RPG adventures, products, and accessories to provide the ultimate day of RPG gaming with giveaways and massive foot traffic.

Gamers get to play new games, publishers get exposure and hype for their core products, and retailers get booming sales.

Paizo is proud to again sponsor Free RPG Day and we are excited to unveil our adventures for you today!

Pathfinder Adventure: Little Trouble in Big Absalom

Always living in the shadows is hard when you’re a clever and regal creature like a kobold. Now it’s time to make a name for yourself and bring honor and prestige to your clan.

In Little Trouble in Big Absalom, you take on the role of one of five kobolds from the Hookclaw clan tasked with exploring a treasure-laden vault discovered by a team of Hookclaw diggers. Enticed by the potential wealth, the kobolds brave terrible dangers in what turns out to be a *spoiler* before being asked by the kind old lady to retrieve her magical hedge trimmer from a neighbor’s garden.

Little Trouble in Big Absalom includes two mini adventures that can be played back to back or alone—filling as much or as little time as you have for madcap adventure. In addition, the five pregenerated kobold characters provide a preview of the upcoming Pathfinder Advanced Player’s Guide in this exciting offering for Free RPG Day! Grab some dice and some friends and play the role of determined kobolds!

Starfinder Adventure: Skitter Home

Even the most helpful six-armed heroes sometimes need a little rest and relaxation. But while on vacation to their homeworld, our veteran skittermanders come face-to-face with a threat far more dangerous than they could have expected. Once again, this fuzzy crew must save the day!

In these unique adventures, players can tackle two harrowing incidents in any order they wish, or they can play them separately as standalone sessions. In the first, they party at Reetamander, a festival celebrating a lunar eclipse on the skittermanders’ homeworld, but are forced to confront a villain who attempts to sabotage the festivities. In the second, their underground hunting expedition turns into a rescue mission when stridermanders—massive, terrifying cousins of the skittermander species—wreak havoc in the caves.

In addition to these versatile adventures, this book includes four pregenerated characters that are ready to play, with full stat blocks and backstories. The inside covers include all of the maps needed for this adventure.

Skitter Home is a raucous affair written for the popular Starfinder Roleplaying Game. It’s intended for four 4th-level skittermander characters who are looking for some fun before jumping into action like the helpful heroes that they are.

Join in the fun and grab a copy of Paizo's Free RPG Day offerings while supplies last. These special adventures were created specifically for Free RPG Day 2020. The print editions will be available for sale and free PDF downloads will be available on paizo.com 30 days after Free RPG Day.

Historically we weren't to run the FreeRPG content via Online means until the PDF dropped a month later (even if you had the hardcopy), I wonder if that timeframe may reduce given the current climate.

The 2nd picture is for a "Stafinder Adventure"? I think this might call for some crowfunding . . . .

Thanks, we will fix the typo on Monday. Have a good weekend.

It's going to be "Stayfinder", isn't it?

A new game while you stay at home during the pandemic.

Oh these sound fun. I also love the title Little Trouble in Big Absalom.

I was curious if the We Be Goblins line of Free RPG Day adventures would lose something now that they're a core ancestry and not just an odd change of pace. Giving Kobolds a chance to shine sounds like a good option. Especially how popular the little scaly dudes are. And with PF2, they're likely to not have terrible stats like they do in PF1. The theme of wacky shenanigans with little misfits does seem to be continuing. And while I don't play Starfinder, I wholeheartedly approve of skittermanders. In fact, I think they should make an appearance on Golarion in PF2. There's an entire world here that could use their help.

I'm curious if this group of Kobolds will be the focus of all the PF2 Free RPG Day offerings, or if there will rotating concepts.

Kobolds will be core in PF3. The end will be upon us. All hail Groetus.

Kobolds will be core in PF3, and the Free RPG Day adventures will be focused on Flumphs. Who will be core for PF4. Flumphapalooza!

I preemptively endorse kobolds as a core 3e ancestry and am arming myself for the inevitable flame wars.

Alas, in store gaming is not happening in Minnesota with the pandemic. This will be the first Free RPG Day where I won't be GMing for the actual event. :/

Hmm

Same here...can we run these online the next day?

Our contract with Free RPG day limits when we can make the adventures available (either digitally or in print) beyond Free RPG Day itself. I believe it's a 30-day window of exclusivity before we can release either PDF copies or VTT resources to aid GMs in running the modules online.

I just converted We Be Goblins for a friend, his daughter and my son. They had a blast. The kobald adventure sounds like a good part two for them!!! Super exciting.

Plushies!? Plushies are for cute things. Kobolds are fierce and terrifying little draconic warriors, not cute. I mean does this bloodthirsty brute look cute?

...oh. He totally does. Absolutely adorable. Ok, plushy time. ;)

Will there be Society bonuses for completing the adventures on July 25?

That is generally true, but with so many states being on lock-down preventing FLGS from allowing a gathering in support of Free RPG Day, are they considering a modification of the contract to allow PDFs so we can support the event in an online platform?

Actually, the German Pathfinder releases often get the titles wrong (or at least very inaccurate).
Like what, for example?

Probably the rushed Core Rulebook from PF1e, 11 years ago. And finding a good and catchy translation for e.g. "The Harrowing" or "The Pact Stone Pyramid" was definitely not easy.

It is easy to criticize someone, that this is generally bad. It is not so easy to point someone else to the mistakes they made in order to fix them. It is difficult to help improve a German translation. and it is very difficult to actually work on a translation when you have a day job and a family.

I was a strict buyer of English books, too (and I have sooooooome books).

I've come to appreciate during the years, that a translated flavor/read-aloud text gives you the chance to paraphrase the text to the players. This is so much better for the atmosphere at the table than trying to translate the text to the players while reading it.

So even if the translation team got it "wrong" some times, the German books are a font of excitement for a group that relies on atmospheric RP. Or you switch to playing in English entirely. (hm. but reading an English text with a German accent may also be the death of any atmosphere you have build...)

What if we're travelling to participate in Free RPG Day and then bring the printed scenarios back to our local lodge to run? Are we allowed to run it before the 30 day window?

The 30 day exclusivity applies to it being available to acquire (I'd say purchase, but I think Paizo gives away the PDFs for free, though I'm not sure). So, beginning on Free RPG Day and for 30 days after, the exclusive place to acquire the Free RPG Day products is at a retailer participating in Free RPG Day. After that 30 day time period expires, Paizo can make the product available on their website.

All that to say, none of that has any influence on what you do with the product once you've acquired it. The 30 day limit doesn't apply to your use.

Whatever you do once you have your hands on the Free RPG books is outside of their provision. Paizo themselves simply can't provide the .PDFs or VTT materials until 30 days after the date.

I'm sure plenty of people will travel to get the free books, and bring it back to their own locations.

Are the sanctioning docs and Pregens ready yet?

Look forward to running Skitter Home but will have to wait for the pdf to run it for the local group online, as I have to avoid crowds due to asthma. Also not sure the local stores, running on very limited hours are even participating as they did not last year.

Finally, after eleven long years, VINDICATION!

Are these going to be available as PDFs at some point? Due to Covid-19 my FLGS cannot have groups.

Yes! The free PDF and the $5 print versions will be available on paizo.com in 30 days (when the FLGS exclusive period ends).
