I need some clarification in the Wizard School Power. We have a Wizard leveling and we need help before next week.
In the chart it lists School Power as a special ability every couple of levels. But in the description of the Powers they are gained only at 1, 8 and whatever the last one is :)
Now my question is this: What are these intermediate Powers?
We see two possible avenues.
One is that the School Powers are at will and increase in potency every 2 levels. This is how we have been using them, as there is no rules stated limiting their use per day.
The second is that the School Powers are used a limited number of times per day based upon how many School Power "slots" are available. Which is what the School Powers every few levels could be preceived to be. Which then leads to questions about how do you mix the use of higher and lower level Powers.
Any help and clarification would really be appreciated.

Most wizards chose one school of magic over all others. Due
to their devotion, they gain a number of abilities based on the
school of magic chosen. In addition, each school grants the
specialist wizard a bonus ability so long as he did not prepare
any spells of his opposition schools that day. Wizards without
a favored school gain access to the universal school and do not
gain a specialist bonus ability.
Arcane schools grant one ability at 1st level, 8th level, and
20th level, as noted in their description. Unless otherwise
noted, these abilities are activated by using a standard action.
The wizard’s level is used when determining the caster level
of these effects. The DC for any save is equal to 10 + the spell’s
level + the caster’s Charisma modifier. Arcane school powers
that mimic spells are spell-like abilities, while the others are
supernatural.
In addition to these abilities, each school also grants a
number of bonus spells. Whenever a wizard attains the listed
level, he can choose one spell from his school to prepare every
day as a bonus spell. Instead of gaining a spell of the listed
level, the wizard can instead choose a spell of a lower level,
which he can then prepare twice per day (except for 2nd level).
A universalist can choose spells from any school. Once chosen,
these spells cannot be changed.
2nd Level: The wizard can cast any first level spell from his
chosen school. This spell is prepared once per day for every
two caster levels he possesses.
4th Level: The wizard can cast any second level spell from
his chosen school once per day.
6th Level: The wizard can cast any third level spell from his
chosen school once per day.
10th Level: The wizard can cast any fifth level spell from his
chosen school once per day.
12th Level: The wizard can cast any sixth level spell from his
chosen school once per day.
14th Level: The wizard can cast any seventh level spell from
his chosen school once per day.
16th Level: The wizard can cast any eighth level spell from
his chosen school once per day.
18th Level: The wizard can cast any ninth level spell from his
chosen school once per day.
1,8th and 20th are powers. 2/4/6/10/12/14/16/ AND 18 are spell cast 1/day[ well is 1 day per 2 levels]
the powers are by school and they do change, some are always on. while some have a x/day usage. If you would post which school I can give you more info

Lets try 5th and 10th levels
5th. As long as you don't prepare prohibited spells you gain +2 to [con, str or dex]
* 1st.Telekinetic Fist (Su): As a standard action 3' 1d4+2
* 2nd. The wizard can cast any first level spell from his
chosen school. This spell is prepared once per day for every
two caster levels he possesses.
*4th Level: The wizard can cast any second level spell from
his chosen school once per day
at 10th As long as you don't prepare prohibited spells you gain +3 to [con, str or dex]
* 1st.Telekinetic Fist (Su): As a standard action 3' 1d4+5
* 2nd. The wizard can cast any first level spell from his
chosen school. This spell is prepared once per day for every
two caster levels he possesses.
*4th Level: The wizard can cast any second level spell from
his chosen school once per day
*6th Level: The wizard can cast any third level spell from his
chosen school once per day.
*8th Change Shape (Su): You can change your shape for
a number of rounds per day equal to your caster
level.so 10 at 1oth level] These rounds do not need to be consecutive.
This ability otherwise functions like beast shape II
or elemental body I.
*10th Level: The wizard can cast any fifth level spell from his
chosen school once per day.
also you get the normal allowed spells. the extra spells at 2,4,6,10 must come from your school. they can never be changed once chosen

Thanks!
Where did it say all that? We had four of us pouring over the books and missed all that. OK it was late late at night, granted. :)
And all I can say is HOLY CRAP that is a lot of stuff to get.
That one got me for awhile too. Check page 194 in the text about Arcane Schools. =) Should give you the information you need.

it is page 194 in the beta. I listed that in a spoiler on my first post. also keep in mind that the spells ate 2,4,6,10,12,14,16,18 can not be changed once taken. they are extra spell you can cast 1/day. an extra slot for that spell. they must be from your school as well.
1/8/20th are spell like ability's. and what they do depends on which school. As each school grants a power and that power is lost for the day if you memorize a prohibited school spell.
Glad I could help.

as for as I know yes. the powers and such are class features. Caster level is not. Unless a PRC says it improves all class features or things such as channeling[turning] and such it does not.
Thanks again.
So it makes really sense to continue advance levels for cleric and wizard instead of multiclassing quickly.

I've got a question on the school powers gained at 1st level. Is this spell-like ability only once per day or at will?
For example: an Evoker gains the Energy Ray ability. Is this ability limited to once per day or is it an at will ability?
At will, once per round. It's basically a Wizard's crossbow.
