Find out Next Time, on Starfinder Society!

Wednesday, February 28, 2018

It's safe to say that John Compton and I can get a tad excited about campaign storylines. When we first sat down to start hashing out the first wave of Starfinder Society scenarios, we came up with a huge list of ideas that pulled from popular Pathfinder Society scenarios, common sci-fi tropes and more. Of these ideas, perhaps none stood out more than one fateful thought I threw into the mix after reading about Eox: "What if we have the Starfinders take part in a reality TV show?"

Welcome to Starfinder Society #1–09: Live Exploration Extreme! Written by Paizo's own, John Compton, this scenario had one of the most attention-catching premises that we came across during the time when we sat down to pitch the 2017/2018 scenario roster. I knew it was a success when during the process, we went through discussing each of the scenarios, got to this one, and John ended the conversation with a quick "Ok, I'll write this one."

Well John, after so many times writing scenarios for you… THE TABLES HAVE FINALLY TURNED!

Joking aside, Live Exploration Extreme is an important scenario for several reasons. First off, it's back to basics in terms of being a Tier 1–4 scenario. Second, it brings the Starfinder Society back into the mysterious false moon of Salvation's End that we last explored in Starfinder Society Scenario #1–00: Claim to Salvation. Finally (at least for what I can describe in this blog), this scenario brings the idea of celebrities and icons to the forefront of Starfinder. I would highly suggest that if you have a character with the Icon theme or are even slightly interested in dabbling in the realm of "stellar celebrity" that you give this scenario a shot!

Much of what occurs during this scenario is a spoiler-filled minefield, so rather than talk too much about the plot, I want to talk about media overload. A camera crew accompanies the PCs during most of this adventure, and if that weren't enough, the PCs need to put on a good show in order to impress influential Society allies (who may or may not have an exclamation point in their name, similar to the title of this scenario). Be aware that this scenario plays off a lot of tropes of modern reality TV, replete with moments for PCs to embellish their combat actions to set up "just the right shot" or even take some time after combat to privately reminisce (or harshly critique) the actions of fellow party members inside "the booth." More than most scenarios, Live Exploration Extreme is about consent; the goal is to have a fun time and not have players feel out of place because of themes or rules of the scenario. The scenario makes sure to spell this out to the GMs, so for players concerned about the potential media and social overload associated with reality TV, I would still consider giving this scenario a shot—after all, sometimes it's the one quip from the character who's said nothing else the entire episode that defines a show! This scenario has no scenario tags.

Looking ahead to March, we have Starfinder Society Scenario #1-10: The Half-Alive Streets and Starfinder Society Scenario #1-11: In Pursuit of the Scoured Past which I've just finished my development pass on. While I want to keep all those secrets until next month's preview, I think both scenarios include some standout stories that should engage new and veteran Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild players. Past these two (yes, next month begins our publishing two scenarios per month) we start getting into a wide array of new scenarios that lead into the quickly approaching convention season…

Speaking of convention season, I think I need to get back to development! There's a lot of exciting stuff coming up in just the next few months. Also, be on the lookout for a post in the coming weeks discussing our season transition and plans taking us past the summer convention season.

See you on the other side of the Drift.

PS: Special shout-out to Paizo's Customer Service Manager, Sara Marie, for helping to inspire this month's scenario. I first discovered the joys of combining reality TV and tabletop RPGs when I played in her Survivor-themed game during a past PaizoCon. Of course, I may have rose-tinted memories of that game because of how many times my character managed to snag the immunity idol…

Looking forward to play this the next SFS night at our local store!

Need a GM, any chance John could stop by to run it? ;)

Gonna be honest, there are a lot of Starfinders who are going to be in Inception levels of reality TV. The real question is how many of them don't have a backstory TV show.

Interestingly enough, I ran this recently at OrcCon for a raffle-selected (zero cost) group of six players two weekends ago. It was an excellent time! Keskodai was a backstabbing jackal.

Otherwise, I'm happy to run the event when I'm visiting an area and have advance warning.

She is indeed a corporate ghast—a TV associate producer named Wazasha Kevir. She takes her job very seriously.

I like to make it out to a few conventions each year beyond my "usual" circuit of PaizoCon and Gen Con (such as that recent trip to Los Angeles as a special guest at OrcCon). If someone's interested in having a member of the organized play team out to their event, it's important to contact Tonya with the details. Keep in mind that we typically figure out our travel schedule many months in advance so that we can budget everything properly and weigh which regions need some attention.

I'm running this Friday in Portland, OR and am having such a hard time reading through it - I keep getting too excited to continue reading!

This is, by far, the best PFS/SFS scenario I have ever read.

Here is my dilemma:

The character that would provide the best 'screen'/table chemistry would probably be my -1, a Vesk 'science nerd' Mechanic.

The character that would fit via Theme would probably be my Android Envoy Icon -2, faithfully reproduced to best historical records...

...argh.

...and no, I don't follow 'reality-vee' and like having brain cells and at least being able to pretend to have faith in all of my fellow sentients...

...I'm guessing in the future they've figured out industrial-strength odors, perhaps Wight Guard to help get rid of those ghastly aromas?

Come to think of it, this is an innovation we could use NOW... just saying

So far, I am really digging the scenarios. Most of my enjoyment from starfinder is coming from the story, plot lines and characters in organized play.

Yes! My Icon Envoy's negotiations with Zo! at the Gala are finally paying off! They'd better make sure they film her good side or she's sicking her Free Captain Ex on them.

Excellent... *Mr. Burns steepled fingers*

Now, one thing I am interested in hearing about, is player/GM reaction to the end of this scenario (specifically the big reveal inside Salvation's End.) I want to know what people think this means and where they could see it going. If someone is so inclined, I'd love to see a spoilers-included post on the Starfinder Organized Play boards starting a discussion on this topic.

It's something I certainly want fan feedback on!

We are going to target a Con in 2019 to see if something can be worked out. We realized we need to get our event in really early so you guys can plan your time.

Huh. Are we talking a VTT? This would either need to happen before OutPost... or after. Charli is going into a game run by the author in OutPost, and will be occupied for weeks.

I frankly don't see this happening before March 5th unless we can clear some time this weekend.

Hmm

I'll be playing this with my Envoy Icon Barathu, known as The Ringmaster (if only because his given name sounds both like a deflating balloon and rather rude in Common).

His profession? Reality Entertainment Producer/Host. I am definitely looking forward to duelling interview scenes... ;)

Space Lucius could be down with that, but VTT?

i'd be interested in finding out how many characters gained Infamy from this - I'm one!!

after being recorded in Solar Sortie just prior to this scenario, my Ghost Operative (supposed to be a "grey man") had enough. i did everything I could to derail the scenario once i learned i could do so and still get the full rewards. i "helped" the camera crew get better close-up shots (one went into a ravine), stood back from combat to help narrate all the things the other characters were doing wrong, actively tried to hack into the data feed to influence the audience votes, and generally caused chaos. at the end, i had PLAYERS upset with me!

You seem surprised in your last sentence that others would be upset with you. By your description of events it sure seems like you were behaving in a disruptive manner.

i did forget to mention that:

a) i told them at the start (after finding out that we could strive for infamy) that i was going to do so, and, more importantly, why my CHARACTER would do so.
b) i never did anything against any other character, other than talk smack about them - especially in the booth
c) i APOLOGIZED to everyone at the end...

i was accused of not being a team player - after playing and running organized play for 30-odd years i can assure you that's NOT the case...

also, as it is practically encouraged by the scenario that one character be the antagonist to "make for better ratings", it surprised me that middle-aged adults (not teens or young children) would get upset and not be able to separate the player from the character.

To answer your original question:

I've played this, GM'd it twice, and had it run as another table at our store. None of those 4 tables accrued any infamy.

Being the guy everyone loves to hate, by definition, requires people hating you. We can also say these are our PCs actions and not ours, but role playing often blurs the line pretty hard.

As long as its in the spirit of good fun - good work!

The first time I ran it one of the players started off as the jerk, but once I explained it'd earn him infamy he decided to change gears. Not everyone wants to earn infamy, but there's nothing wrong with that choice!

Sovereign Court 4/5 5/5 ** Venture-Lieutenant, Netherlands—Leiden

I had one player do so, mainly by giving bitingly sarcastic commentary, suggesting killing the cute alien critter and so forth. Everyone enjoyed it.

Given that the scenario is fairly easy, the players can afford for someone to be less than 100% helpful in combat, although it's likely to be not appreciated.
