Faction Overview: Second Seekers

Where the First Seeker leads, the Second Seekers follow. Exemplifying dutiful service, the Second Seekers follow-through on the Society's pledge to support the First Seeker, the elected head of the Starfinder Society. Unlike other factions, the goals of the Second Seekers vary over time, adapting to each new leader's mission.

Even before the Organized Play team started work on the factions for the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild, we had the opportunity to work with the Starfinder team to create the in-game Starfinder Society organization. One thing the Organized Play team agreed on from the beginning was changing up some of the leadership structure for the new Society. We'll be going into further detail on differences between the Pathfinder Society and Starfinder Society in a future blog post, but for purposes of today's blog, I wanted to briefly talk about one new role: the First Seeker.

The First Seeker is an elected Starfinder who takes on a senior leadership role within the Starfinder Society, directing the organization for a brief period. Each First Seeker is elected based on a platform: a defined goal for the Starfinder Society to pursue. As an example, the Society's previous First Seeker, a kasathan solarian named Jadnura, petitioned to explore a corner of the galaxy known as the Scoured Stars. That particular mission didn't go so well for the Society...

The Second Seekers are a faction dedicated to furthering the agenda of the current First Seeker. Their dedication extends only to a specific First Seeker, not necessarily to any First Seekers who came before or after. When characters gain Reputation with the Second Seekers, they only gain Reputation with the specific First Seeker who they champion. This means that the Second Seekers will evolve as we continue telling stories through the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild campaign, with each newly elected First Seeker acting as an entirely new faction. Once a First Seeker's term ends—such as at the end of a season storyline—that doesn't mean your characters stop championing that First Seeker. In fact, any character with an appropriate faction boon for that specific First Seeker can continue to champion that individual for the rest of her career—just don't expect a lot of new scenarios involving that First Seeker!

Because of the First Seeker's importance to the Second Seekers faction, you'll see the Second Seekers presented in text with the associated First Seeker listed in parenthesis. The first iteration of the Second Seekers faction shows up as "Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo)."

This brings us to our first faction leader for the Second Seekers: Luwazi Elsebo (NG female human envoy). Luwazi was responsible for keeping the Starfinder Society together in the aftermath of the previous First Seeker's expedition to the Scoured Stars. Her goals include rebuilding the damaged Society while investigating what happened in the Scoured Stars. If any of the Starfinders lost in the Scoured Stars can be saved, Luwazi intends to find a way to make that happen.

Players get their first chance to interact with Luwazi Elsebo in Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild Scenario #1-00: Claim to Salvation, the pregenerated character special debuting at Gen Con 2017, written by Pathfinder Society and Adventure Path veteran, Larry Wilhelm. This scenario acts as a prequel to the start of the Year of Scoured Stars, and showcases some of Luwazi's more unorthodox methods for keeping the Starfinder Society intact, along with the first seeds of a faction we'll be spotlighting in a future blog.

Now, I don't want the Exo-Guardians to get away with having more information than our recently spotlighted faction, so I figure I can share one more thing. Characters gaining Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo) Reputation can access some pretty exceptional boons, many of them themed around the idea of preserving and rebuilding the wounded Starfinder Society. Here's one boon I think a lot of Second Seekers are going to pick up.

Team Spirit (Untyped Boon)

You are an expert at using your resources to help other Stafinders.

Prerequisites: Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo): Tier 2

Cost: 1 Fame

Benefit: When you or another character is killed during an adventure in which your participated, reduce the Fame cost of the raise dead spellcasting service by 2. This boon is not expended when used.

Special: A character can only benefit from one copy of this book at a time, to a maximum discount of 2 Fame.

As you can see, a character purchasing this boon reduces the cost of raise dead by a noticeable amount of Fame. Even if just one character in a group has this boon, every character at the table benefits from the discount. I suspect we'll see a lot of characters gaining Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo) Reputation picking this boon up. I also suspect we'll see groups looking to muster for higher difficulty content going out of their way to make sure a Second Seeker is on the team!

Ok, that's it for today's post; I need to get back to finishing up the last Gen Con scenarios. Stay tuned for our next blog, when we talk about Wayfinders—and I don't mean the magical compasses!

Thousands of years in Pathfinder's future... and death still exists? Raise dead is not obsolete (no cheap cloning, IA back ups, personalities stored digitally and downloaded into new sleeves...). Bummer.
Thanks for the nice blog post!

Pretty sure book should be boon.

We tried to make returning to death less expensive, but we found our spell components flooded with cheap knock-off materials. Before we knew it, we had accidentally raised an army of improperly raised adventurers that became one of the new galactic threats.

Nope nope, from now on we restore life by the book.

BYE BOOK!

I think there's a typo, "A character can only benefit from one copy of this book at a time."

That said, I'm wondering if its more likely a similar platform replacement will appear or if a First Seeker would get reelected if people really like specific Second Seeker modes.
Edit: wow, ninja'd by several posts.

I'm a little unsure of how changing First Seekers season to season would work for us grunts.
If I get that boon for First Seeker Luwazi Elsebo one season and then the next season a new First Seeker gets elected does the boon no longer function?
In the next season when First Seeker Bob is elected, if there was a boon for First Seeker Luwazi Elsebo last season could I still get it if I stick with the old First Seeker?

When First Seeker Bob gets elected, then Second Seekers (Bob) becomes a new faction. We want players to know going into the Second Seekers, that the term of a specific First Seeker eventually comes to an end. Now, that doesn't that Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo) can't keep gaining Reputation or benefiting from the cool boons they've acquired, but it does mean that there probably won't be any Luwazi Elsebo themed missions in the future.

I'm OK with this, because to me, in order to be part of the human(oid) experience, death still needs to be something to be feared, rather than being as off-putting as a minor car repair. "No guts, no glory" still needs meaning.

I like her outfit accessories.
Also, the mechanical left arm is awesome, and with the colourscheme she reminds me of a certain cartoon I used to watch. If only she was an anthropomorphic mouse.

Also, it's nice to know name, alignment, and deity of whoever's trying to bring you back. Reliability is highly valued in Life-and-Death situations.

I like this faction because it's basically the exact opposite of the Shadow Lodge: "The Starfinders are exploiting us to achieve their goals...exactly according to plan!"

Several of the background concepts in creating this faction—and the in-world Starfinder Society's structure as a whole—were to build in a much stronger sense of upward mobility and provide more transparency overall. Every First Seeker has risen through the ranks, received the overall approval of her peers, and laid out a plan of action that her colleagues have vetted. Yes, Second Seekers often see serving the First Seeker's goal as a worthy enterprise that contributes to the Society's understanding and/or well being, but they also value the reciprocity of someone having served the Society and earning the service of those who would aspire to become First Seeker themselves one day.

Does Untyped Boon mean we can put it in any of the 6 boon slots?

This means that it doesn't go into a slot. Untyped boons are considered "Always On" unless they specify other conditions of use.

Oh, I like that detail about untyped boons. I also love how second seekers might be able to keep following their faction leader even after he or she is gone. Nifty!

This is a very interesting faction with lots of story potential.

If the term of a First Seeker is roughly a season, does this mean that we, the Starfinder Society, will be given some options for the next First Seeker, that we then get to vote on?

I would love voting for a first seeker.

That's a straight up good idea, especially when you remember how comparatively little we know about the Pathfinders and how murky and unpleasant that can be. To my recollection, we've never actually an in character appearance by the Decemvirate in any scenario, module, or AP and the funny thing is...I don't think we ever will. It's possible that one day our characters will have climatic battle with the Aspis Prophet and his minions on top of a burning clock tower while the Tarrasque he summoned destroys Korvosa but when that battle is over and we're getting rewards and Chronicle sheets, I'm betting we still wouldn't get a personal meeting from the Council of Ten because they'll be too busy plotting another way for use to risk our lives.

Ah, that would be the little-known Boston chapter of the Starfinders. ;-)

There are also 2 other scenarios I am aware of where Decemvirate members show up.

But overall the same kind of murky leadership set-up would make a lot less sense for Starfinder so I too am happy for the change.

Curious I am subscribed to the Starfinder Society Roleplaying guild Scenarios but I see my subscription starts with 1-01 - Commencement. Do we get 1-00 as part of our subscription as well?

On topic an interesting faction I am liking these more and more and I am very curious to find out what happened during the Scoured Stars incident.

Huh... looks like a lot of you have interest in voting for the First Seeker.

Seems odd.

I'd have guessed there'd be more people with aspirations to BECOME the First Seeker. I mean, that could be possible... right? :)

I assume that to be First Seeker you must first be a Seeker.

Since all we have are 1st level characters, I don't see that happening very soon.

But yes, I would love to see the chance for one of my characters to actually be First Seeker!

Just as I hope one day be a Venture Captain....

Nah, never be the one in the spotlight, be the one they are beholden to for their position so they enact your will without any potential fallout coming your way.

Once we've had time to learn enough about the setting for our PCs to have an agenda worth putting forth, we'll be clamoring for power soon enough. :)

The best mission briefing I ever got was for a 7-11 where you are briefed directly by one of the ten. It was certainly an important enough mission for it. It was also my first time at Gencon so the atmosphere of the room probably contributed to it.

There's also Seeker content were you interact with them directly.
