Enter the Maze of Death

Friday, July 7, 2017

Happy Friday, all! After some delay in our blog schedule, I am super excited to begin showing you some of the awesome figures in the next Pathfinder Battles set, Maze of Death. This next set releases in November 2017, and is chock full of awesome creatures, villains, and heroes. So, without further ado, here is this week's unveiling!

What kind of fantasy maze would it be, if it didn't have minotaurs? We have three of them in Maze of Death. First, is the large uncommon minotaur artillery, because if you get hit by a large heavy crossbow bolt, it doesn't feel like a bolt, it feels like a ballista.

Next, we have the minotaur cleric, hail Baphomet! 'Cause what is worse than a Minotaur with a crossbow? One that can cast flame strike, or bestow curse with reach. Just sayin'. This minotaur cleric is also a large uncommon.

To wrap us up this week, we have one of my favorite miniatures in the set, the minotaur labyrinth guardian. Thats right folks: we made a miniature of a minotaur "graveknight." This imposing (and incredibly metal) foe is a large rare.

All three of the minotaur figures in Maze of Death are based off of artwork found in Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Bestiary, and are stated up inside.

Next week we take a quick side-trek to look at Iconic Heroes Set #7, featuring occult iconic characters, and also releasing this fall. We'll then resume our journey through the Maze of Death with imposing plantlife and aquatic foes!

I like the cleric the best. All three are cool.

I find it interesting that many minotaurs in D&D are large, but some of were mediums.

In Pathfinder are they all larges?

Silver Crusade

To my knowledge , yes.

THANKS for the update Mr. Kenway, look forward to any and all of your updates on the miniature lines from Pathfinder Battles and the Iconic lines. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

As discussed elsewhere, these should be correctly labeled as Miniataurs.

All three are interesting. I think they will make great encounters. :-)

Sovereign Court

Is that flame transparent plastic?

Thanks for the great update, Michael! :-)

I have a question, though.

You write that the set will release in november, but on Wizkids release schedule, which got updated yesterday, it is still stated that it is out in october.

So do you expect it to ship this late from Paizo or has the release date really been pushed back?

I really can´t imagine that both the Pathfinder Battles set, the Iconic Heroes Set 7 and the newly announced D&D Icons of the Realms: Classic Creatures Box Set will be released in the same month. Normally Wizkids leaves at least 1 month between Pathfinder and D&D releases.

Thank you and have a nice weekend! :-)

I never thought I'd want to play a minotaur, but here we are..

nice,
I'll have to employ them sonewhere, just because.

After the lase set I was going to ask "no more undead" please, but this one will do nicely.

It looks like the flaming effect at the top is supposed to be, but it´s impossible to say now if this will still actually be the case with the finished miniature.

I guess we will have to wait at least until the prototypes arrive...

These three make a nice army build possible and i wonder if the set will also include the fourth illustration in the sourcebook these come from, which is actually NOT the INNER SEA BEASTIARY, as stated above, but the Inner Sea Monster Codex, but that is an understandable mistake. ;-)

We now already know what five out of the twelve LARGE minis in the set are , and not a single one is bad! :-)

Dark Archive

The missing fourth Minotaur by the way is the "Minotaur Marauder", a female ranger with studded leather armor and a greataxe depicted charging, which would translate into a gore attack.
But three large minis of the same race is probably enough for 1 set?
The set IS called MAZE OF DEATH, though, so who knows?

The Artillery is called "Tangle Tender" and is actually a trapsmith rogue.
The white one is called "Prophet of Baphometh" and a cleric as Mike wrote.
The "Labyrinth Guardian" is, what the Fighter 1 with Graveknight template is called.

The Inner Sea Monster Codex is a good book and we can probably expect even more minis (in this set?) taken from there, so take a look at it if you want to speculate a little. ;-)

Just when I thought I'd never need another Minotaur, these guys show up. Very cool! And lots of role-playing potential over the more feral versions.

All three of these are very nice looking minis and incredibly useful for variety on the table. Add to that the fact that rarities are spot on and the cleric is female and this set of off to an amazing start.

Man, that grave knight is awesome sauce. I'm going to have to hunt down a few more for my collection, either that or start ordering 2 cases - lets see what the future reveals.

I like them. I could have used more cool minotaur minis as Trollocs in a Wheel of Time game I ran back in the day.

Great to see the mini blog starting up again.

Yes! I'd been wondering what happened to the minis blog! Glad it's still a thing!

And loving these minotaurs! They'll go nicely next to my ones from WotR and H&M.

While I like these Minotaurs, I do have to ask when will we get some of the simple things like a mule with supplies on it? I mean there has been a mule in almost every adventure I have ever played and yet it has not showed up at all in PPM.

I love the quality and work Paizo puts into the PPM line so I would love to see them do a mule.

Yes, a donky/pack mule, pony and camel would be awesome.

I love that we finally got the small dog and boy & girl minis in the actual set, but actual low CR creatures that you can either chose as animal companions or summon with "summon monster/natures ally" remain underpresented.

-Ant, Giant
-Bat
-Boar
-Cat
-Dolphin
-Eel
-Monkey
-Octopus
-Squid
-Toad
-Viper
-Weasel

are all creatures which are next to impossible to get in the right size.

Simple things like barmaids, dancers, innkeepers, dogs, children, pigs, and draft horses?

It's cool to want to have a mule, but it isn't fair to act like non-combatants are not being made.

There's a bat in Dungeons Deep.

To me, none of these would be as awesome as some/more of the uncommon player races: ratfolk, kitsune, tengu, wayang, etc. A mini that could be used throughout an entire campaign vs maybe once around 1st/2nd level.

You´re right about the Bat, i forgot about it, even though i have it (and the one from D&D too).

I´m glad we´ll finally get Ratfolk in the next set & in Starfinder too (even if there are some Wererat minis i can substitute).
There are some D&D "Tenku", which are Tengu otherwise we only have the pirate from Skull & Shackles, so more would be nice.
I absolutely agree on Kitsune & Wayang.

That being said, animal companions & familiars are more common than the "Beast races" (which i like).
I think we need both. ;-)

Reaper just today released a pack donkey in unpainted plastic if you are interested.

Minotaurs were only medium if you were playing Dragonlance, and then only if you were playing 3rd ed. (Possibly 4th as well, I'm not sure) In previous editions Minotaurs were large no matter what world they came from.

Not sure why you felt the need to read into my post more than was there. All I said was I would love a mule with supplies as it is a staple in almost every game I have ever played.

To be real clear; I love all my Paizo miniatures. I buy a full case every time and yes, I love my non-combatants as well as the NPCs, monsters, and other fun things. It is because I love the quality of their work that I suggested it would be cool if they made a mule. Nothing more. No slam to anyone.

So you only use your familiar or pet companion for one or two levels?

Let's just accept that you have a different idea of what is useful then I do. I have never used or seen used at my table a kitsune or tengu. The ones I already own just sit on the shelf unused. But the dog, monkey, and cat minis are used quite a bit.

I can accept you see things differently than I do. So for your sake I hope you get everything you want.

They have a camel with luggage and stuff as a separate piece too.

-Ant, Giant (I use the D&D minis ant people for this, or the Large Celestial beetle)
-Bat (there are 2 D&D minis and a Pathfidner Battles mini for this. Wizkids' familer packs for the unpainted deep cuts has a bat as well. Reaper 77176: Familiars pack also has one unpainted)
-Boar (we have a small/medium pig and a large boar, I don't think we need more.)
-Cat (Reaper 77176: Familiars pack has this, and its a really easy thing to paint)
-Dolphin
-Eel-Reaper item 02948:Familiar Pack VII ($13.99 - metal unpainted) has this
-Monkey
-Octopus-Reaper item 02948:Familiar Pack VII ($13.99 - metal unpainted) has this
-Squid
-Toad
-Viper - There are lots of various snakes minis that cover small/medium including vipers in Heros and monsters, and at least 43 I can think for from D&D minis)
-Weasel (Reaper 77176: Familiars pack has this, and its a really easy thing to paint, There is also a Dire weasel in the D&D mini set angelfire)

Oh yeah forgot about the camel. I don't think it was released singularly yet, but it should be soon.
