The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Returns to Gen Con!

Tuesday, August 2, 2016

We're going back to Gen Con, the place the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game made its debut! And boy, do we have some cool stuff for you to see and do.

But before we dive into that, Paizo's kind enough to let me share this: Tanis, Gaby, and I wrote a puzzle novel called The Maze of Games a few years back, and it's featured in a Humble Puzzle Bundle we're running for one more day. Some of the proceeds go to our favorite charities: the It Gets Better Project, Worldbuilders, and Child's Play. If you like our puzzles and you like ponying up for good causes, pop on over there and take a look.

OK, Gen Con!

Come See, Hear, and Talk to Us!

You can come see Paizo in booth #300—we'll be demoing Mummy's Mask, which will be out in October. And a lot of the Lone Shark team will be in booth #2847 showing off the Apocrypha adventure card game. If you're an ACG fan, this is the show to be at.

Say you want the signature of some of the designers. My crewmates and I will be signing at the Paizo booth on Sunday from noon to 1 pm. You can also find me and the other designers signing at the Lone Shark booth for an hour on each of the four days; check the schedule at booth #2847. You can get your Reta Bigbad signed!

There's more Pathfinder ACG to be found in the seminar rooms. Mike and Chad will join Penny Arcade's Mike "Gabe" Krahulik to talk about the evolution of their arc of games, including some discussion of PACG, at the panel Big Co-Op Game: From Betrayal to Thornwatch on Thursday at 1 pm. Right after that, at the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game panel on Thursday at 2 pm in room 212 of the convention center, our team members will talk about Mummy's Mask, the Goblin decks, and other such awesomeness. Then on Friday at 1 pm, at the Pathfinder & Obsidian Entertainment panel, we'll chat up the digital game and all the cool things to come from that. If you like hearing us talk about things you like, you'll hear us a lot at Gen Con.

Come Play the Adventure Card Guild With Us!

The Sagamore Ballroom will have lots of Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild games running, including not-yet-released installments of Season of the Runelords. Plus there are three events that are anything but ordinary.

First up: Season of the Goblin! (That link is to the first session, but there are about a million others.) You can play characters from the brand-new Goblins Fight! and Goblins Burn! decks if you like, or you can play a character from any other class deck, but—spoiler alert—you get turned into a goblin. So if you always wanted to play Seelah without all that do-goodnik attitude, this is your time. Adventure 1 (of 2!) in Season of the Goblin was written by Tyler "Cartmanbeck" Beck, David "Theryon Stormrune" Jacobson, and our own Keith "Keith Richmond" Richmond. It's freakin' bonkers. Go play it at Gen Con.

There's a very special tournament called The PFS Interactive Special: The Cosmic Captive. This is an idea we've been kicking around for a while: What if we bring together Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild players and Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild players in a single cooperative event? And then [redacted] you to [redacted]? Well, you should have heard us snickering about it. If you like either the ACG or the RPG, you'll find this a perfect match for your sublimely good taste in games.

And then there's the Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild: Gen Con Open Tournament, our competitive battle between teams of PACG players. This year, we have a cunning twist to the format: You don't need to bring a class deck to this one. Instead, we'll give each four-player team four class decks at the start of round one. We're not going to tell you what class decks they are, though I will say that they each have three characters in them. From those four class decks, each player chooses a character, marks it on their team's form, and builds a deck in a limited time. Should that team be lucky enough to make it to round two, they'll get the same four class decks, except this time they can't play any of the four characters they played before. Then if that team makes it to the finals, they have to use the last unused character in each deck. So this is an exercise in careful planning and time management. Also, we aim to kill some characters. Good luck to all the challengers!

Those are our plans for Gen Con. It'll be a wild time and we hope you can join us. See some of you there!

I am very intrigued by the interactive special, but alas shall not be at GenCon. I can't wait to hear about it though.

I'm going to be at GenCon, but I'm not signed up for any specific ACG events--I instead plan to just drop in with generics whenever I can play for a bit. That worked fine last year. Is that something I'll be able to do again this year (assuming I don't come by when the ballroom is wholly overrun with the RPG players, like in the evening interactives)?

I'm even more bummed that my two friends can't come this year. I'll have to choose our characters with two strangers.

Grand Lodge

I'm packing AS WE SPEAK! Hoping to get an early start tomorrow.

Grand Lodge

I guess I should pack as well.

Season of the Goblin! huh? Interesting.

We're at our halfway point overnight stop.

I'm burnt out on Paizo's goblin mascots, but it doesn't look like my regular ACG group is planning on using them for whatever we do after we finish Season of the Shackles so I'm not too worried about it. (As it is I both made sure the group was OK with me putting Blizzard into Amaryllis' deck and is OK with me casting it when it's our best option. I'm glad we have a good group that works well together.)

The tournament should be interesting. I'm not expecting to advance, but it's neat that we get to build decks this year rather than getting prefabs.

So for the Interactive Special event - what do we need to bring if we are playing in the ACG side of it? Do we need a preconfigured deck?

From what I understand, you will need to have a PFSACG-legal character of tier 1-6. A 7th-tier character (one who has completed an entire guild adventure path) isn't eligible to play.

Arrived, picked up my Game-coordinator packet, ready for tomorrow.

We'll try to fit in generics when possible.

Yup, you absolutely can. There are even tickets available for the Cosmic Captive ACG event, so you should be able to hop into that as well.

Ironically I only have one 4-6 right now. I haven't had time to train others :) I hope he doesn’t bite it as I kind of need him for my regular play group...

Just noticed this on Twitter. An Obsidian promo card called Goblin Golem of Obsidian. Looks like it is not only a physical card, but can be redeemed somehow in the app too.

More info from Obsidian here.

Thanks Hawkmoon for the heads up. I hope this is made available to subscribers

I guess I have to go to the Obsidian part of the booth for that card?

In other news, go Team One!

The open tournament was super fun, but yikes was that a tough setup.

Come one people! More details. Without spoiling anything of course. How was the interactive special? Did it seem to work well having the card game and RPG working together?

Since I was sad that you, Eliandra and cartmanbeck weren't able to come, I'll provide a bit of detail (I still have to write up a proper report)

Interactive was interesting. Even the card game version requires a GM and there's a reason for this. It was very hard to complete within the time limits. There wasn't as much interaction as I'd have liked, but chaos seems to abound. I may ask my Venture Captain to run the event so I can run the ACG portion with it.

ACG Organizer boon was great (RPG GM boon for Tier 1 was also great, but that's not here nor there). Not as mindblowingly amazing as last year's Arueshalae boon, but still great nonetheless.

They also rotated some of the boons from PaizoCon and I got one of the later ones (the Lust one)

I imagine Obsidian will go to other cons to distribute the promo card (Myfly's ears perk up), like PAX West and BGG.Con.

Silver Crusade

Since I spent all weekend texting people for updates, I've decided I definitely need to go to GenCon next year. We'll see if I can swing that and PaizoCon. I just need to keep telling myself, "Well, you could stay off work sick, or you could work from home and go to PaizoCon and GenCon."

Congrats to Rebel Song and Team One for winning the Open!

She cleaned up in other tournies as well.

Season of the Goblin was a big hit as well.

Has anything been said about if and when Season of the Goblin will be made available to the general public?

Well, we gotta finish Season of the Runelords first before the mini-season of Season of the Goblin.

OK then!

Hoping to have a team for the Open next year (congrats to this year's winners!), but this year the special was a blast. It was cool to have the two games working towards the same goal, but I'll echo Zeroth's point about hoping for a little more interaction. It was disappointing at times to hear about various bonuses going active for doing so well, without noticing a change on the ACG side. That's the only non-positive comment I could possibly come up with though. The story, the gameplay, the choices, it was all amazing and anyone who designed it deserves two big thumbs up.

I was able to get a couple games of Season of Goblins in as well, and they were really well done making it feel like a true Goblin-y game. Although I only played with the Goblin Fight deck this weekend, with exception to the special, it of course isn't mandatory. Definitely looking forward to more ACG, special included, at GenCon again next year. Who knows, maybe a PaizoCon 2017 is in my future as well being waaaay closer and cheaper...

Yeah, she's pretty cool. Happy to have her as part of our MD/DE/PA contingent. :-D

:-D Thank you, everyone! I have to give a shout out to Iceman while I'm here. And my fianceé and Rob, who, when asked if he visited the forums often, said "the what?".

I had so much fun. Seriously. It was awesome, thank you so much for putting it together! I'm even more bummed that I missed out on it last year!

I'm working on my write-up, but I've got a bunch of work stuff to do first! We even had a Chadturn in the first scenario, but I forgot to announce it (was too concentrated on what was going on).

[edit] I wanted to tell everyone that running into armies without mythic paths is just as terrifying as it sounds. Even when your characters are tier 7 and there are plenty of blessings to go around. Still terrifying. Also I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to say about the Open, so I'll try to be vague and mysterious. ;)

Rob Watkins doesn't really get onto anyone's forums much, no. I was chatting with him about the Open afterwards and he praised you quite a bit, Rebel Song :)

Looking forward to seeing your writeup. Vague and mysterious sounds good. After all, your characters were pretty drunk when they did the adventure! (Warning: The drinking game from one of the rounds where you take a swig when you move or fail to acquire a boon is not recommended for those whose livers are not adamantine hardened)

Back from Gen Con!

I played the RPG side of the Special; we're going to be running it with both sides at SkålCon next month, so I'll get to try the ACG side then.

In the Open our team advanced to the second round but didn't make the finals. Overall it was a bit less strategic than I'd hoped; you had no real idea what was coming and not much time, so you just picked some powers and cards that worked together (with themselves and the group) and hoped for the best. My first round character build was pretty useful, but my second round character almost never used his character powers. As it turned out, my first round character would have been ideal for the second round, but you had no way to know that going into either one.

I was also more helpful in the first round's out-of-game items than the second, which I'd chalk up to tiredness (Thursday vs. Saturday) and being the single with a group of three. It'd be nice to have a full group, but I don't think our local ACG group would be able to manage being in a three-part tournament together due to a combination of varying schedules and wanting to play things other than Pathfinder.

Still, I've enjoyed it both years and will likely try it again next year. :)

I think that things were kept a bit more hush hush than Chad or I had intended. Totally understandable, but hopefully we can make sure the public version of it spells out slightly more what you might expect going forward. Not _entirely_, but at a minimum the name of the three tests and a little teaser flavor for each.

Thanks for the shout out, and right back at ya. We had a great team and just the right amount of luck. It was an absolute blast. :)

And, for those wondering, we came up with our team name at the end of the first scenario, in which Rob and I produced an unwholesome number of 1's. I think he only did it the first turn. I did it on the first turn also, and then once or twice more - thankfully I was the character with multiple heavy armors.

I do partly agree with Parody about the strategy aspect, and not knowing anything about the scenario when picking characters, powers, and cards. Though I cannot say I was surprised by the lack of foreknowledge. Years and years ago, I was involved in the D&D Open and other Team events, which did similar things -- it's just another way of upping the challenge.
That's actually one spot where we got lucky. The character I held onto for Sunday turned out to be the perfect choice for us to gain an otherwise-impossible, third-turn location-close (that ended up revealing the villain, which Really helped).

I have to say I liked not only the scenarios, but the trivia and match-game side bits. Nice touches, if you ask me.
I'd love to say more, but apparently we're all being vague. ;)

Hah! Had not though about the consequence of that check as being drinking-related, but it makes perfect sense.

Rob was a very welcome last-minute addition to the team. In particular, he was one step ahead of me in making the mental/paradigm shift required by the first and third scenarios' special rules (focusing on villains as location-closers instead of cornering them, spreading certain challenges among the party).

I look forward to next year!

The trivia bit was quite fun. I wish I'd gotten to hear more of the questions.

Our first question was pretty much a "gimme" for us as I'd just finished running the RPG Wrath AP that very week.

I wanted to use villains as closers, but that would have required ever rolling average while fighting them, as opposed to rolling things like 9 total on five d10s...

We literally had one player hand wipe 5 times over the course of one scenario, and then bury her discard. Her entire deck was 7 cards at the end.

I think some of my friends had gotten too used to the app reminding them to use abilities; especially forgotten was the recharge to draw scenario power which would have relieved some hand stalling. My summoner was card cycling like a charm so I never used it myself. It was fun using movement shenanigans to never start or end a turn at the Torture Pit.

We didn't advance to round 2 but the first round was a lot of fun.

Scarab Sages

Congrats to the winners! Looking forward to a full run-down of this at our next PACG day.

Back from Gen Con. I think I slept through the special, as I'd just done 11+ hours of volunteering on 4 hours sleep. And there were many who put in way sillier hours than I did!

Any news about the Mummy's Mask PACG set to Gencon ?

Grand Lodge

I personally didn't learn anything that I hadn't already known before. I got to see the demo versions of Zadim, Estra, Damiel, and Alahazra. I saw the cards with the Trigger trait set to catch unwary scouts. I saw blessings carefully worded to make them somewhat more dangerous to use... And I saw a curse.

Definitely looking forward to the set. And rethinking my Magic Spyglass...

My daughter and I had never played any of the Pathfinder card games but had an absolute blast at GenCon with Mummy's Mask. I found the Paizo team patient with some of the (very) noob questions we asked and they were all very professional.

Thanks for making GenCon 2016 an enjoyable experience for us.
