Minnesota Pathfinder Society Gives Back the the Community

Monday, August 24, 2015

At Paizo, we get an overwhelming amount of feedback surrounding the growth of the Pathfinder Society. Many of these are positive reports of our volunteers and Venture Officers building strong gaming groups and communities within their region. And occasionally, we hear back about how these local chapters are turning their passion for gaming and PFS into a platform for giving back to people in need. We were contacted by the Minneapolis/St. Paul lodge recently, and wanted to share with you how they've decided to make a difference through their local convention, Skål Con.

On September 18-20, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Pathfinder Society lodge will host a brand new convention: Skål Con. This is our opportunity to give back to the community as Skål Con is a fundraiser for local charity Tubman—Minnesota's largest provider of family crisis and support services. We will donate every dollar we make beyond covering our base costs (which we have done!) to Tubman: all of it.

The inside story...

I was flush with excitement from our best Con of the North ever and wanted to keep the momentum going with a new convention. With the input of other Venture Captain and having run conventions (including in unconventional spaces, like grocery stores even!), I challenged myself to come up with a plan. Fantasy Flight Games had opened a brand new game space, Fantasy Flight Game Center, in the summer of 2014. We already have a great relationship with management, and the room is large enough for our group. Within hours of getting to work and emailing the rest of the Venture Officers and volunteers that made Con of the North a success, we all went to work. It is a testament to our local group of volunteers that within three months we had the more than just the skeleton of the convention in place.

Why charity? Why Tubman?

I wanted Skål Con to be more than just another con, as it was our goal to give back to the community in a meaningful way. I wanted us to do something positive that benefited those who need help and have a great time doing so. When I sat down to think about where our efforts should go to, the choice was easy.

Each year Tubman helps over 30,000 women, youth, men and families who have experienced relationship violence, sexual assault and exploitation, elder abuse, addiction, and other forms of trauma. As the state's largest provider of domestic violence services, Tubman provides 20% of all Minnesota shelter beds for women and children experiencing family violence. This is a small sampling of the services they provide to those in need. I am proud we are able to help a truly great organization reach their goals.

We need your help!

Paizo has graciously allowed us to do a guest blog about our convention, but to reach our fundraising goals our local chapter needs your help. Please go to skålcon.org to register for the convetion and/or donate. If you choose to attend, we will be auctioning off items (like this signed Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook, artwork, and more!), hosting raffles, and running both Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild and Adventure Card game tables over the weekend. Your help allows us to give back to our community.

My sincerest thanks to you all!

Based on the way you said that, apparently not enough.

Something just occurred to me. If we make enough money where I need to visit the barber, I will no longer resemble THUNDERLIPS!'S avatar. Oh, noes....

Yes, I really do look like that avatar. Simply change the hair color to brown and there I am.

We are so close to our goal I can smell the Barbasol!

We need a little over $1000 and this is our last week. Even if you can't attend, please think about donating a few dollars as every donation gets us that much closer to our goal. Tubman is a wonderful organization that deserves our support.

Will you help us meet our goal?

If everyone who read this thread donated 5 dollars now, we could get Jon shaved. So... I've just donated 20. C'mon, hit that donate button. It's for a great cause!

I was originally planning to go, but circumstances have conspired against it and thus thwarted me.

Still, cueballing Jon is a(n) (ig)noble cause, so I've donated my cost of attendance anyway. :-)

At it's heart, even though we all love playing Pathfinder, SkålCon is about giving back to the community. Yes we are all about getting together and playing the game we love, but we also want to show how big of a heart we all have. Therefore, I am offering up the following challenge goal for SkålCon in an effort to pull new players into the game and to earn donations where there otherwise aren't any. My hope is that others of you consider doing the same - this is a good cause after all.

I will purchase a ticket at the door for the first two unregistered players that meet the following criteria:

  • Do not have a current PFS number
  • Did not register on WarHorn (or cheated by removing their registration to take advantage of this)
  • Are confirmed by any PFS leadership as not an active, current, or former player
  • Were not planning to attend SkålCon in the first place
  • Are not trying to game the system and get in for free by my offer (as determined by the above PFS leadership)

I'm hoping one of you can recruit a player from the store floor to come and play a game with us - even if it's just for one session. If they play for more and love it, hopefully will gain a new player, and more importantly, hopefully they will know what kind of cause we will be getting together for.

See you all tomorrow!

The rush of people (myself included) when Jon announced that we were $45 short of getting a shorn Andy was quite impressive. It was a quiet Sunday overall (roughly half tables?), but there were about 6 or 7 folks with handfuls of cash swarming Jon.

It was a wonderful convention for a wonderful cause. I had a lot of fun meeting people from my own state whom I'd never met before. I got the honor of GMing and playing with some absolutely hilarious players.

In addition, in our final game of the weekend, we met a young eleven year old boy who'd never played Pathfinder before. I invited him to sit in with me and help me play my character. The boy had a blast (he loved rolling for me) and was overwhelmed when Andy Christian gave him his winning raffle ticket and told him, "Go pick out something for yourself." The kid's mom has already RSVPed him for a future event, and we all got to mentor a brand new Pathfinder.

I couldn't be prouder of my local gaming community!

I think I have recovered from the weekend and last night to write with some eloquence.

This past weekend was, simply put, amazing. Unbelievable. Stunning. Over 70 people came together as a community and raised more funds for Tubman than I ever thought we would. Going into September I thought "If we can raise $1500 I'm going to be really happy." We smashed $1500 by 6:20pm Friday night. At 8:30pm we surpassed $2000. What happened next is just one reason why our community is so special.

When I made the announcement to the room that we had made our goal of $2000 and that I would be getting a shave and a hair cut, Chris Mortika, unprompted, called out "How much more do we need to raise to get Andy to shave his head?" After Andy recovered from his initial shock, he set our next goal; we needed to raise $3500. I thought we could do it. I wasn't sure, but... something just seemed right. We still had raffle tickets and dice to sell, and the silent auction was just getting started.

Saturday was a full day of gaming. The piratey goodness filled the room with an energy that was palpable; you could feel it. You could see it on people's faces. There was laughter, there was shouting, there was gaming happening. It was beautiful sight. We ran twelve tables of "Siege of Serpents" Saturday night to cap an awe inspiring day. But the best moments of our inaugural con were still to come.

The young man we have already mentioned above was for me, one of the single greatest moments I have ever had in this hobby. Better than the first time I cracked open the 1st edition Deities and Demi-gods book. Better than the time at GenCon a very wonderful women excitedly told me she wanted to play at my table on Sunday because "Everyone at your table looks like they are having so much fun!" After chatting for a few minutes, I looked over to our HQ and told one of our volunteers to grab a Beginner's Box and please bring it to me. Seeing his eyes light up and the look on his face when I told him, "Here. This is for you" and the barely contained cry of joy from him as he ran over to his mother is a memory I will never forget. I will never forget it because that was me 30 years ago. You would think that be enough, but you are wrong. There is more to this story.

I walked out of the room hoping to catch them before they left. I shouldn't have worried as they spent the rest of the day at the convention. So I had a chance to chat with his mother a bit. She told me how he has mild Asperger's. She told me stories of how he would spend hours doing research about Pathfinder reading everything he could find, but how he had very few friends and thus no one to play with. She was so happy to find out about us so he would have an opportunity to finally play and she wanted to make sure I knew that if his behavior became problematic that she could intervene. I told her it wasn't necessary. I told her that he was among friends, he had found his tribe. We would not judge him, but instead welcome him into our community and treat him as one of us. I could see her start to tear up. She was so happy for her son because we made him feel welcome. Seeing a mother cry tears of happiness all because we showed kindness and love to young man whom none of us knew was what made this the single greatest moment I have ever experienced in any role-playing capacity. Little did I know our community would surprise me one more time on Sunday.

I knew we were close to making our new goal of $3500, but not the exact amount. So I did a quick check of our finances. When I saw how much we had raised, I began to giggle. I couldn't stand still. I had to make an announcement. Grabbing the bowl of dice, I walked to the front of the room and made the following statement, "Pathfinders! I have a very special announcement! I just wanted to tell you we are a mere FORTY-FIVE dollars away from making our goal of $3500!" Before I could even finish, several people stood up from their tables, grabbed their wallets/purses, and began to almost run to me pulling out whatever cash they had. I got more than $45 dollars. The first person there gave me forty-five dollars. Once again, our community of players surpassed my expectations.

We raised $3735 for Tubman.

People who know me understand I am rarely at a loss for words. This past weekend left me stunned silent. Thank you to everyone who gave.

There are a few people I need to thank. First is Clinton Boomer who volunteered his time to run three sessions of the retired scenario "Hands of the Muted God". I want to thank John Compton for allowing us to offer this scenario for credit. Thank you.

I want to thank everyone who donated items to our silent auction. I want to acknowledge Liz Courts for her gift of custom character artwork and Erin Shursen for donating two pre-painted minis (Crowe and Kyra). These items were two of our biggest money makers. Thank you very much.

I want to thank Fantasy Flight Games for being the best host a brand spanking new convention could ever want. With out their generous support this would not have happened.

I want to thank all of our volunteers. You all made the convention run with zero emergencies. Thank you.

I need to thank Andy Christian, Keith Apperson, Jack Brown, Jolene Danner, Erica Loppnow, and AJ Torgerud. These are the cabal who latched on to my crazy idea (We can put a convention together in six months, right?) and made it reality. With out their hard work, dedication, and ability to put up with me Skal Con would not exist. Bravo everyone.

Yes it was fantastic. It was only the second RPG Con I have attended (the first being GenCon in 2008 where I played at the first official table of nWoD Hunter: The Vigil), but it was by far the better of the two.

The energy level all three days was incredible, there was much laughter at every table, and with the exception of that damned puzzle in Six Seconds to Midnight every second of the Con was awesome.

I look forward to attending many SkalCons in the future...
