New Year, New Set: Dungeons Deep!

Friday, January 9, 2015

Welcome back to the first 2015 installment of my weekly Publisher's Preview blog! As diligent readers know, I've been eager to share news of the next big Pathfinder Battles set with you, and I'm pleased to say that the day has finally arrived! The next full set of Pathfinder Battles figures will be Dungeons Deep, a 51-figure set inspired by the deadly dungeon dwellers of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game! The all-new set is expected to debut in June 2015.

Unlike previous sets, Dungeons Deep features six non-creature figures that we're calling "dungeon dressing," an experiment we plan to continue with future sets going forward. I'll have a lot more to say about dungeon dressing in the next few weeks. I am SUPER excited about this development, and WizKids has gone above and beyond to create some truly unique pieces I am sure you will all enjoy.

Let's take a look at three digital sculpts for the set!

Up first is one of my favorite figures from the set, the mighty Sasquatch! Sure, sasquatches are not known for living in dungeons, but I chose this guy to preview first because he's one of my favorites from the set and to illustrate that this theme is pretty loose—don't expect every single figure to be a literal dungeon dweller. Some stuff made it in simply because we thought it was cool! The Sasquatch is a Medium, uncommon figure.

This is the Dwarf Barbarian, one of several dwarf figures in this set. Dungeon denizens need heroes to slay, so we've included several in this set as well. The Dwarf Barbarian has a great pose, and is based on the illustration on page 10 of the NPC Codex. The Dwarf Barbarian is a Medium, uncommon figure.

Here is the first piece of dungeon dressing, the Bubbling Cauldron. The cauldron features clear plastic fire and clear plastic goo, and is a nice accompaniment to a witch or hag villain's lair, or a savage humanoid's kitchen! I'll go into more depth on the rarity of the dungeon dressing in a future post (because I've honestly forgotten how it will work), so please hold questions on that until next week. I know at the least that there will be at least one of each bit of dressing in a case, but I think there are more. I'll clarify next week when I show off another one.

So that's it for this week. While June is certainly a long time to wait for Dungeons Deep, WizKids plans to fill that time with monthly Iconic Heroes non-random sets, each of which features six premium-painted iconic heroes and exclusive Pathfinder Adventure Card Game cards to go with each one! Thanks to an overseas shipping delay, the series is set to kick off with Valeros, Seoni, Sajan, Seelah, Lini, and Droogami the Snow Leopard in February, and will continue with regular monthly releases from that point forward. I've got the final versions of the first set on my desk now, and they are gorgeous. They are going to blow you away with how awesome they look!

Glad to be back in the swing of things in 2015! We'll see you here next week for more reveals, more information, and more sweet minis!

The text of the listing says it's a D&D/WOTC mini. Does the base actually say Paizo?

It's definitely a Paizo mini. I think the seller is just trying to make a sale, and so isn't particular about how he lists it.

That means that the Feiya and King Irovetti replacement figures will not appear in The Lost Coast, and will instead be inserted into the next set we do after that. We apologize for the delay, but I for one am impressed with WizKids taking the initiative to fix the problem. None of us needs more bad Feiya figures.

Just wanted to check that this is still happening for the this new set? Or did I miss a post somewhere?

Yes, that is still the plan.

Erik, by any chance do any of the 6 pieces of dungeon terrain detach from their bases? It would be great if the bases contain a small peg that friction fits into the terrain piece.

Most of them won't actually have bases. The cauldron is a bit of an exception to this rule, apparently. :)

Erik, a quick question for you, since I know you follow these pages: I recently stumbled on to a mini being sold on Ebay as a Paizo promo called the Albino Wererat, clearly a repaint of the S&S Wererat. (It was a Hong Kong seller, as far as I can tell.) I've never seen these released anywhere else or for sale anywhere else. Can you tell me what's up with this mini?

It's a promo repaint that we haven't released yet. I'm guessing someone at the factory grabbed a few and is selling them that way, as they've never left our warehouse and until now I've not acknowledged that they even exist.

We'll find a place for him as a promo in early 2014 (I'm guessing PaizoCon), and he'll be made generally available on paizo.com shortly thereafter.

So temporarily I have a very rare mini?!? Ok, nice to know. Sorry somebody has been breaking the rules, though.

I actually see a lot of Paizo minis coming out of China on Ebay; most of them look to me like factory seconds, slightly imperfect to one degree or another (though most are pretty close to fine.) Does Paizo care about this, or is it not something that concerns you?

Paizo Employee Publisher, Chief Creative Officer

Temporarily you have a _unique_ mini. Not bad for $1.25 plus shipping.

I just looked at that seller's other auctions, which are mostly prototype action figures with no accessories. I'm guessing it's someone with access to a manufacturing plant who scoops a handful of goodies every time he comes to work.

I guess it's kind of annoying, but whatever. There's nothing we can do about it, and if it lets a collector get something weird or cool as a one-off I'm pretty sure the Earth won't fall out of orbit.

Well, if the mini does turn out to have pull-Earth-out-of-orbit powers, you can take comfort in the fact that I am Good-aligned enough not to use them :-)

Thanks for the response, and sorry to force you to tip your hand!

Of course there are things you can do. Report it to eBay or to the manufacturer yall use. Get your suppliers to sign NDA and put liquidated damage provision in it for breach of confidentiality. I could go on but you get the point.

I have indeed gotten some other weird stuff from sellers like that. At one point, for instance, I was able to grab some sort of transparent version of the Large Earth Elemental from Shattered Star, which I then painted up as a very cool looking crystal elemental or golem. (It was never something intended for sale, I think, and had no stamp on the bottom or anything. Maybe some sort of master?) But there are clearly people in China who have realized that there are crazy collectors in the West who will give them good money for what I imagine is essentially worthless where they are. I've always wondered who these guys are, though, and how they get their hands on the stuff.

I'm really excited about the cauldron, personally. The last time I needed one I had to borrow one from a Lego set. I'm also eager to snag an Albino Wererat but it looks like the prices have steadily crept up as more people have found about them. It certainly pays to wait for them to appear on the site rather than get them through ebay.

Yeah, sorry. "There is nothing I feel like doing about it, or worth the time investment it would take to do anything about it" is probably more accurate.

You got me. :)

I love the cauldron, it looks fantastic and I think it would be very useful. In general I think dungeon dressing is an excellent idea!

I know I'm looking forward to getting some of that!

So we´ve got:
44 regular minis (sasquatch, dwarf barbarian and several kytons),
1 Gargantuan case incentive (red dragon? (because every second set includes a chromatic dragon so far)),
6 pieces of dungeon dressings (cauldron + 5 others)
AND the Feya and King Irovetti replacement minis
which brings us up to a total of 53 minis - almost like old times! ;-)

And while i´m at it my guess for next sets GARGANTUAN miniature:

It will be a "CHELISH WARSHIP"!

It is a Gargantuan red dragon !! :D

http://heroclix.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/71817-Pathfinder-Battles-Set -Dungeons-Deep-Gargantuan-Red-Dragon.pdf

At this point the only gargantuan chromatic dragon left to go is black.

Hmmm, looks like they've taken down whatever pic you were linking too. But I trust you when you say it was up. That's good news! It's about time that slot got filled.

But now I'm feeling bad for Erik; that's two big reveals this thread has now cost him :-(

Nope; it's still there (or at least it was when I wrote this). The board software sometimes inserts an extraneous space in long URLs, as it appears to have above.

Yeah it's too bad. I had seen the wizkids thing a bit before it was shared here, but held off on posting it to avoid stepping on Erik's toes. For what it's worth though the gargantuan red does look gorgeous.

I'm a huge fan of the dungeon dressing! In my opinion there is nothing wrong with more than 1 cauldron and in reality hope I do get 2-4! Prior to getting my DwarvenForge I was never a fan of terrain pieces. However, once you go in this direction there is no turning back! 3D terrain, dungeon dressing and awesome miniatures by Paizo makes some real good set-ups! I think it's a great idea for Paizo to try this out. In the end they can decide on whether it works or not!

I imagine Wizkids does things like Post the PDF about the Red Dragon without thinking about how it might impact Erik.

It does not matter to me, I am still looking forward to his "pre-view" as I am sure his photos would be better than their one. :-)

It's a digital render, and quite expected since it's been high on the everyone wants it list. It's the one after this that is supposed to the surprise, never tried before incentive I believe. Still, I'm interested in the actual sculpt rather than the render although I imagine it could be quite annoying for Erik - he seems to take it in his stride though. The same solicitations give away a lot more about the set as well (another 5 minis) but I'll leave that for Erik

Personally it doesn't affect me too much since I much prefer the previews for the little bit of info and story that goes along with each.

Ultimately, it's a Wizkids product even if it is under license.

They presumably have their own marketing timelines which don't necessarily line up with paizo's weekly blogs. Erik is building excitement amongst the ultimate consumers. Wizkids need to give distributors and retailers enough information far enough out for them to decide to buy lots of cases.

For quoting Eric on is Friday, December 19, 2014 pathfinder battles preview

<< I can't show off any of the numerous awesome images I'd love to unleash on you as a special gift from Santa.

But leaking images out of the elves' workshop before their time is a good way to disappear in a suspicious sleigh accident, so I'm afraid there's nothing I can do but look over these images myself and smile about what's in store.>>

So big red dragon is a late sleigh accident from the big red guy, for being good person for a whole month without any image preview ;P

Well, it seems it has been quite a day for leaks. I have now added all 7 leaked minis to:

http://www.pathfinderminis.com/gallery19.htm

and

http://www.pathfinderminis.com/gallery0.htm

When minis have been leaked, Erik usually then includes them in his next preview, so on the plus side Erik will now have an easier time trying to decide which minis to preview over the next 2 weeks :)

I think it is rather odd behaviour on the part of WizKids.

First Erik is not allowed to say anything because it hasn't solicited the set yet, leaving him unable to make a preview post with images.

Then, Wizkids themselves leak all sorts of information themselves.

That just doesn't seem right to me.

The new ones don´t show up on the first link Kor.

The albino wererat link works.

Also while you are at it there are a lot of D&D Attack Wing news - the best of them the "Red Dracolich". ;-)

Now the link works - thanks Kor!

The "female Storm Giant" is a "female Frost Giant" - a Storm Giant would be Huge size.

The mini to the right of it is a "female Gnoll".

The "unknown" lizardlike mini to the far right is a "Chupacabra" and small size.

The "large Boar" is a "Dire Boar" (the base looks large to me too) and the rising back indicates the same rather than being a "normal boar" of medium size.

Thank you for your great site Kor - i visit it quite often! :-)

I think what you are seeing from WizKids is the solicitation for the set, not a leak. It tells retailers the anticipated release date and when the have to order by. My guess is that hadn't happened when Erik wrote his post, but now it has.

Erik also probably realizes that people clamoring for leaks and "black market" unreleased wererats is a good indication for the demand for the product line.

Well, however guilty I feel about peeking behind Erik's curtain, those are some sweet minis! I'll wait until Erik reveals them properly to say what I like about them, though.

Thanks Marco. I was really stumped on the female gnoll. She looked too "pretty" to be a gnoll, so it never occurred to me that, that is what she was.

I will be updating the D&D miniatures soon, now that they have posted information on many of the next few Attack Wing sets, and the next Icons of the Realms set.

Aaaaahhhhhh!!!! (Excited screaming, not angry screaming) ... I have just resubscribed to the PF Battles (with Lost Coast of course) so I think I'll be "good to go" concerning the Iconic Heroes sets (right, right)?

But, I am more than excited for several of the minis I'm seeing slated for Dungeons Deep!!! Gargantuan Red Dragon! Female Frost Giant!! Dire Boar!!! Wow, wow, wow!

Can't wait for future previews. (Curious about the other "Dungeon Dressing" pieces too).

Squeeeeeeeee!!!!

Albino were rat has forced my hand. I will now be attending PaizoCon 2015. I seem to have some weird obsession with albino creatures. Whatever you,do please don't switch him to gencon!

it's about time we get a reasonably priced Dire Boar. These thing tend to come up in my games, and with the Harbinger version prices, I only have one. I want more and the Deep Dungeon version looks sufficiently sinister to meet those needs.

You'll be good for the discount on Iconic Heroes, but you'll need to order the items themselves.

Yuuuuup.

Guys, this isn't that big of a deal. I am certainly not broken up about it.

I could have selected the same figures on the solicitation sheets to preview, but I wanted to do different ones.

It's nobody's "fault," and it's not really that big of a problem. These things happen.

And, honestly, you guys have been starved for new images for a while, so this way you get even more than you expected!

Albino Wererat is pretty much a lock for PaizoCon. I don't have any other promo minis that we haven't already used, and I won't get the next batch until about June (in time for the summer con season).

So your albino love is safe, Mine All Mine. :)

Any thoughts about doing dungeon dressings as a non-random set? That's one I'd be interested in buying.

LOL, you've got to wonder who gets the crappy job of MOVING all the dungeon furniture and stuff down deep into the underground lairs and such. I mean, that cauldron MUST WEIGH a TON and we're not even TALKING about the RACKS, IRON MAIDENS, STATUES DEDICATED TO EVIL GODS AND FIENDS, etc etc. ^_~

I always assumed the mad wizard that built and/or controls the place used levitate to get them in there.

Of course, if he's got access to ogres, giants or strong outsiders, they'd work too. Maybe he'd have to throw some bull strength on them from time to time.

But, now that you've got me thinking about it...

How about a common goblin with his arms out? If I had four of them, I could display them carrying the cauldron! :-D

Hey there, just a general question ... having recently resubscribed to the minis ... I can purchase previous sets and still get the discount, is that right? (I'm looking at getting the Reign of Winter set in a month or so, once I pay off the Lost Coast set from my card).

Thanks,

Dean

I believe that you get the discount if you are a current subscriber who had the latest Battles case purchased through it. So if you got Lost Coast case via subscription, you should get the discount (may want to confirm via Customer Service to be sure though).

If I began a subscription to the minis, how much would it cost to order a Lost Coast case with the promo with shipping and handling?

How soon would I expect to get them?

Thanks for your help.

I recommend reposting this message on their Customer Service forum:

Actually, go here:
http://paizo.com/store/v5748btpy8o6b

Add the ongoing subscription to your cart. Then view your cart. Make sure it is set to start with the Lost Coast, and that you want to add the case premium. Then proceed to check out. You can see the shipping cost that way.

Great! I just booked my flight and hotel. I'll be there Wednesday through Tuesday.

Thanks Kor and Hawkmoon! That's very helpful.

I am still waiting for this set from another vendor that I preordered it from, and I'm considering whether it's worth the extra $40 it would cost to buy it from Paizo and cancel the other order.
