GM Rewards

Monday, February 10, 2014

Season 5 is nearly halfway done. That means we've posted faction head letters (stickied) in the Faction Talk section of the Pathfinder Society Organized Play messageboard. We'll also be sending out the email update to registered Pathfinder Society players as an additional heads-up, and we're frequently exploring other ways to get the word out.

Over the past three seasons, the Pathfinder Society campaign has published special scenarios that are exclusive to 4-star GMs, 5-star GMs, Venture Captains, and Venture Lieutenants—both to reward our top judges and to incentivize others to GM more and earn those stars. When Pathfinder Society Scenario #2–EX: The Midnight Mauler first came out in early 2011, the campaign had one 5-star GM, about half a dozen 4-star GMs, and 18 newly minted Venture Captains. We've since grown to over 50 5-star GMs, more than 150 4-star GMs, and 345 Venture Captains and Venture Lieutenants! Rather impressive!

Since then, we've introduced quite a few new GM rewards that continue to reward and incentivize the campaign's excellent volunteers to keep sharing their hobby with others: limited replay and the star bonus on "shirt re-rolls." Today we're announcing both a new reward and a change to how we're handling the exclusive scenario this year.

The Exclusive

This year we're releasing The Ruins of Bonekeep, Part 1: The Silent Grave as an exclusive scenario for qualifying GMs, who can now run the adventure anywhere. These GMs should see the scenario in their downloads early this week. Keep in mind that when qualifying for one's fifth star, all Ruins of Bonekeep adventures contribute to a GM's 10 required Exclusive or Special events.

GM Star Chronicle

Back when Mike first became Campaign Coordinator, I remember sending him an elaborate proposal for a GM reward system. Back then it was clunky, required heavy IT support, and accurately reflected how new I was to booncraft, so the idea faded from memory. We recently rediscovered those old plans, blew off the dust, and (with the help of some clever Venture Captains and Venture Lieutenants) revised the concept for distribution. In addition to being available for download from this blog, we will add these to the Free Products page in the next day or so.

The GM Star Chronicle sheet is a one-page reward that provides benefits that scale with a player's stars and a character's level. Each represents a character's tutelage and special training with one of the three Masters: Aram Zey, Kreighton Shaine, or Marcos Farabellus. When you meet both criteria for a boon (such as the GM having 3 stars and the character being level 5+), you can skip a Day Job roll or spend 1 Prestige Point to train with your patron and gain that boon's benefits. At this time, each GM can only select and assign one such Chronicle sheet. The exception to this limit is a 5-star GM, who can select and assign an additional Chronicle sheet to a different character for each additional 50 tables of GM credit he or she earns (two sheets at 200 games, three sheets at 250, et cetera).

Download your own GM Star Chronicle today! - (172 KB zip/PDF)

I'm excited to hear what new characters these inspire and how existing characters might connect with these eminent instructors.

Two concerns.
1: When this is released as the Exclusive scenario, is it no longer going to be available for any con-GM? Which is to say, can anyone still run this at a con, or is it "exclusive crowd or con setting?" Like, if I went to a con today where they were going to run Day of the Demon (which is still exclusive for a few days), I couldn't run it. Is that going to become the case with Bonekeep? I'm guessing not, since I know cons scheduling it as far out as May already. But what does that say about the nature of exclusivity in this context?

This is a good point. For those conventions who have gotten Bonekeep Part 1 approved at their cons for the next couple months, and have folks set to run it who are not 4-star+ or V-O, do we need to find a person who can run the exclusive, or are they good for those conventions?

People who have already received it and schedule to run at a convention n the next month or so, they may still run it. After that, it will only be available to 4 and 5 star GMs, and VOs.

Hmmmm.. again with there heretofore ignored scrolls/spells/blades section. Is this what they're going to pare factions down to?

I think every season brings change to PFS. For awhile now many have been asking for GM rewards. Threads with hundreds of posts have been created multiple times on the boards.

The new rewards for GM Stars outweighs any new exclusive. If it were up to me I would of just presented the new GM rewards system which I believe are better than an exclusive that you can run for other players.

Why?

IMO it helps the new GM's and gives them something to look forward to right out of the gate. It not only provides encouragement but gives something tangible soon after Gming. No more waiting until they have GM'd 100 Games and given hundreds of hours to the campaign to solely gain the reward of running an exclusive game for someone else.

This new system is a personal 'Thank You' from Paizo for growing the game. It allows GM's to get some personal reward and be able to use it on their own characters.

Would I have loved another EX? Hell yeah it would of made it easier to get that 5th star. As it stands, I'll have to get creative about it. It makes gaining that 5th star more challenging as well.

And I always like a challenge!

OK, I don't see how this is different. Unless you mean by different releasing an exclusive scenario that is not new at all. (That just sounds like a budget cut implementation). Are you expanding who's included as "qualifying GMs"? Am I a "qualifying GM" because it's in my downloads already because I was schedule to run it at a convention? Or does "qualifying GMs" still mean VO, 4 & 5-star GMs?

Still waiting for the download to back up.

Just so I'm clear on how this works.

I choose 1 of three boon sheets and apply it to a character.

When the character meets the level requirement and I meet the star requirement I can spend a prestige point or forgo a day job to gain one of the benefits I qualify for.

I can then later spend the day job/prestiege to gain another benefit that I qualify for. Correct?

We understand some non 4 and 5 star GMs have this scenario already. However, those folks who are not 4 or 5 star are not allowed to run it outside of the convention it was assigned to their account for. From this date forward, only 4 and 5 star GMs, and VOs, may run it at anytime or place of their choosing.

Looking for a silver lining...

Does this mean for Season 6 instead of a recycled 4 Star scenario released to the public we will have a brand new one?

Just another Note, would have been better to release Part I and II for 4 Star+ instead. Would have been slightly less disappointing.

NO the way I read it, you pay for it once to gain the ability and its always yours after that. If it said to use this ability then i would think its 1 pp per use.

Some of us non-4 & 5 star GMs have already ran Bonekeeps 1 & 2 at Conventions. Do those count towards our 10 required Specials?

Or does the count only begin when we've received our 4th star?

So I have been trying to figure out what to say after the announcement that Paizo is recycling a Year old scenario for the 4 Star Exclusive, and my emotions have made that difficult to post rationally on the subject.

That said much of my thoughts on this and other recent disappointments with PFS have been said in the past in a thread I think Pazio really needs to take a closer look at, because they pushed it aside when it was first brought up.

I agree with many of the thoughts brought up by Drogon in this thread, I did when he first posted it.

This is not the time for Paizo to be pulling stuff like this when another company has plans for so much more for their Org Play.

I am sure there will be those who will disagree with this, please feel free to post your disagreements, but I will not be replying to them because I don't think I can in a rationally and succinct way.

Even better: Bonekeep I is destined to be #6-16ish. How many times can they publish this and call it "new"?

I echo Doug's disappointment in seeing that PFS still isn't worthy of getting more budget consideration than it gets.

No it doesn't. But can you post the superstar item description you were talking about.

I think it was a joke from 2013, because it seemed everyone tried to spruce up their item's description be erroneously using the term filigree.

I think what he's asking is:

If I, a 5-star GM, assigned this to a character, I would have to spend a total of 5 pp (or forgo 5 day job checks) over the course of 5 scenarios to gain all 5 boons for my character I assign the chronicle to.

This brings up an interesting question. If my character doesn't have a day job check, am I required to spend the PP?

In all seriousness, I'm glad to hear that they plan on doing entirely new scenarios all year next year. I hope, however, that I don't see this kind of scene next year at this time.

It saddens me when people who like something somehow have their enjoyment impinged upon by people disagreeing with them.

Edit: Also, your "new" is debatable. Nobody's running down that Chronicle, from what I can see. There is, however, concern about the change being made to (1) what Bonekeep's requirements are and (2) what it means to be in on an exclusive scenario. And if you want people to not complain about change, the Internet is not a good place for you.

Whatever. You can nitpick all your want, but the reality is Bonekeep is now more available that it was before. No longer will you be required to attend a convention with 50+ tables to enjoy it. That is bonus. Period.

And there is now a boon available that was not available before. Clearly that is a reward to the hard working GMs who provide YOU the fun experience YOU have come to expect. Or else why would anyone keep playing?

Of course no one is "running down that chronicle," it just came out and it was pulled down to correct an error.

So my thing is this:

I am not "entitled". I give and share in my community regardless of boons and free stuff. They are nice and I am happy to take my share and be content.

The thing for me about making a "Con Exclusive" Now a "4-5 Star Exclusive" is where I think the entitlement issues present themselves for many. Because it is just a bit lame because now those who want to help out a convention by running it as a special no longer can if they are not a 4-star. While on the other side, those who love the specials because they are that, feel a little swindled from one of the reasons they worked as hard as they do.

I don't care personally. Free stuff for my time is nice, and I am not complaining, but if we agree to disagree, it's the way it goes.

It's not perfect, but hey, life is neither perfect nor fair. Let's just say how we feel, agree to disagree, and not be jerks.

Okay? Thanks, Bye :)

I think you all misunderstand. I'm not as upset about the lack of a free scenario - I'm more upset about the lack of opportunity to reach 5th star. As a practical matter, only a handful of local players have not played Bonekeep at a recent local convention. This is a problem. In recent years, it was significantly easier to reach 5th star, and I feel that the only reason that I'm not being given the same opportunity is that I started a few months. I'd be fine if the Bonekeep plays reset or there was some way to expand the number of people who can play Bonekeep, but as it stands, it's a huge inconvenience.

Bonekeep should have a ton of merit to replay. Once since many people fail. Two the rewards are much bigger. SO for those one star peeps a great sell to have them replay.
