Pathfinder Special #1 Sneak Peak!

Tuesday, November 13, 2013

Magnimar is a city of mythic architecture and colorful occupants. When Merisiel and Kyra decide to 'hit the town' and explore their new home, they end up with more trouble than they bargained for—cutthroat thieves, betrayal, swashbuckling swordplay and much more are found in Pathfinder Special #1, a super-sized story that couldn't be contained in the regular Pathfinder series. They've been having a sort of adorable courtship over the last few issues.

Cheers!

Also, huge bonus points to the comics team for using a canonical monument and for getting the Irespan in the background of the splash page. Touches like that really make it obvious they respect the world they're working in.

Cheers!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, gang! Everyone on the team works hard to deliver a top notch comic.

I'm proud to show two female characters like Merisiel and Kyra in a healthy relationship together. They're great characters rich with personality wearing outfits that exemplify their skills/role instead of being geared first and foremost towards 'sexiness'.

I hope you give the Special a read and enjoy it. Feel free to let me know what you think of it here in this thread or via Twitter (@jimzub).

I do quite a bit of research while working on the scripts to make sure little details like that are included. On top of that, the Paizo editorial team approves each issue just like they do for the RPG sourcebooks and novels, so they make sure it's canon throughout.

Just wanted to say a few things: First, I'm a huge comic fan but I had never delved into the Pathfinder world until I picked up the first issue on a whim, as I wanted a fun fantasy-style comic that reminded me of growing up reading Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms and this series really delivers. It's by far one of my favorites (out of a few dozen) to pick up every month, so thank you for that!

Second, and more relevant to the special, my favorite characters from the beginning have been Kyra and especially Merisiel. Their budding relationship really made me happy and I'm glad you took a slower and more subtle build (I began to first see it coming in issue 7 and 8). The way you present the characters and their relationship is far more in tune with, as you note, the non-sexualized presentation of them in their gear. It's something I really give you and Paizo props for: no chainmail bikinis. It's something I wish DC would take note of (they seem to be moving in the opposite direction...)

And finally, the issue itself was great. I really enjoyed learning more about Merisiel. The dichotomy of her leaving Blodger and saving Kyra was a nice touch. I also liked how you managed to make Blodger a sympathetic villain with real motivations. The look on his face when Meri left him was actually quite powerful storytelling. Kudos to Kevin Stokes for the great illustration. Kyra's hint at her own past was a good send-off to the story, and I hope we get to learn more about her in the future. Her past has intrigued me from the beginning.

My one criticism is the Deus Ex Machina of the final fight, which I wish had been resolved differently, or at least telegraphed/hinted at earlier.

All in all: keep up the great work, really enjoyed the special and I hope there's more in the future!

I'm really not a comic book person but you're seriously making me consider getting some of the comics. >.<
