Five Awesome Things about the Dungeoneer's Handbook

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Get out of the tavern and into the treasure with Pathfinder Player Companion: Dungeoneer's Handbook! Since this book is just over the horizon, I thought I'd treat you all with a sneak preview of what I think are just a couple of the coolest parts about this dungeon-delving must-have.

  1. Dungeon Guides! Found yourself more lost than a bat in an area of silence? Never fear with dungeon guides! Each of these tomes is keyed to a specific adventure location and can help dungeon delvers figure out what kinds of dangers might lurk around the next corner. Bibliophilic dungeoneers should be wary however, for the veracity of these volumes is variable, and those who rely too frequently on their supposedly trusty tour book might discover only too late the flights of fancy implicit in these over-the-top tomes!
  2. New Alchemical Items! With such items as glowing gel-tubes, pebbles that expand into boulders with water, and smoke pellets that cover invisible creatures with sticky black resin, the aspiring trickster need look no further than the cornucopia of alchemical items unveiled in this volume. Oh, and did we mention new alchemist discoveries for those bomb-slinging partisans of all things potable?
  3. Essential Tips and Tricks! Discover solutions to common dungeoneering quandaries with sections on monsters, traps, and treasure. Whether your task involves outsmarting the minotaur guard, throwing an unwitting foe into a suspected swinging blade trap, or figuring out how to haul all that booty back to town, Dungeoneer's Handbook will have you covered with clever advice, helpful suggestions, and brand new feats!
  4. New Hirelings! Who's taking care of your horses outside while you're excavating that kobold-infested mineshaft, anyway? Wonder no more with handy new hirelings—NPCs that specialize in making your dungeoneering career a lucrative one while you concentrate on the action.
  5. Archetypes, Spells, and More! With new magic items, spells, archetypes, feats, traits, equipment, and more, this book will leave every crypt delver and tomb raider fully prepared for their next dungeon visit!

I thought those were one gigantic image, not three individual ones. I've been tricked!

(Also, shouldn't the order be flipped? I'd say that on the whole, dungeons tend to go downwards.)

actually, it looks like the image goes left to right from the bottom up.

utterly boss image, by the way. I want that cut up and stuck on like 8 different magic cards.

I think you're right, ohako. Awesome work, Ben Wooten!

Those images are simply awesome. Great job, Mr. Wooten! Any chance to get them in higher resolution, maybe just a little? Please... :)

Whoa, when did this book come out? How did I miss this?

Merisel looks so damn happy.

Also what is that guy doing to Seltyiel (I think) in the last panel of row 2?

Pretty recently. This went up today, and the PDF goes on sale tomorrow.

It caught my eye with the promise of new alchemical items - I can get a lot of value with stuff like that, usable by multiple PCs. Can't wait to see what might be added to the PFS campaign from this. :D

It appears the statue has come to life and is grabbing Seltyiel by the ear like an impudent school boy.

Cue the fanfic writers!

Indeed (it's good to be a subscriber!). The good news is that PDF contains images at about twice the resolution of the ones linked to above. The bad news is that there's a little bit more information in those lower-resolution images; there's a slight gap between the images in the PDF when going from one double-page spread to another one.

Edit: As I have mentioned in another thread, I made myself a 1920x1200 desktop image from those three two-panel composites. It looks great!

Any chance of getting that image series put out as a poster? Because I would be very interested in getting my hands on something like that.

What's Sajan doing in the bottom panel? That's right...bustin' through a pillar!

I'm almost sold on the images alone!

Merisiel is getting ready to come out and tell Valeros, Ezren and Kyra and that there's nothing in the next room but some extremely dangerous traps that she was unable to disarm...

It's always dangerous to send the rogue in first.

Smog pellets and sneezing pellets have to make it into Talyn's bag of tricks.

Silver Crusade

Awesome. :)

Kyra, Imrijka, Seelah, and Seoni's cloaks/coats/robes certainly draw the eye in the small version.

Seltyiel X Caryatid Column #3 for life.

I think the art in this book is fantastic. However, I think there's far too much artwork in the book and a lot less substance.
One of the things I'd like to have seen covered is companions and the best equipment and magic items to get them to move around. How many rooms have a ladder? Or some other obstacle that prohibits Druids, Cavaliers and others from getting their companions into an area. In many situations you can't hoist a horse down a ladder hole and into a dungeon. Wolf's and Dog's are hard enough. Some ways on which mounted combat could be utilized in a dungeon. The last PC was all about animals and this one doesn't do anything to help a new user of a camel in a place that is (in the original game) half of the name of the game.

Third! I would pay good money to have this be running the length of my desk on the wall... or over where I sit when GMing!

How about making a shorter GM screen out of one of these pictures? I've often thought the usual GM screen is a bit too tall.

Scarab Sages

This would indeed make a great poster - although I would prefer a top to bottom view for that.

Ooh -- this is a great idea! I often find myself wanting to stand up when I'm using the GM screen just so I can see everybody's faces, especially during combat-heavy games. Plus, this would make killer art for a new screen.

Sovereign Court Contributor

Well, even though the art gives it away it would make a cool intro adventure/battlemap. The pics could be revealed by the GM as the players go from room to room...

That's okay Valeros, you toast the death of the dragon, Merisiel will take care of counting all of those shiny coins . . .

oooh oooh, picture => DM screen?

Oh, man, are those skeletons about to get whupped. :D

Silver Crusade

GM Screen?

Put all three in a row and you'd have a GM Fort!

Wow, we need a higher resolution composite wallpaper of those images. Great artwork!

I'd like to see those three panels printed as bookmarks actually.
