Reaper Miniatures Bones: An Evolution Of Gaming Miniatures

Thu, Aug 16, 2012 at 08:00 AM Pacific

I don't normally contact you about another company's products like this, but in this case, it was such a great project that I felt compelled to let you know so you wouldn't miss out!

Our friends at Reaper have been running a Kickstarter project to ramp up their Bones miniatures line. Bones is the line that takes their award-winning metal minis and makes them much more affordable by casting them in an amazing plastic material. (Like Reaper's metal minis, Bones are unpainted.) We have a number of Bones minis in the Paizo offices and everyone is amazed by them.

So why the Kickstarter? Well, the molds to make plastic miniatures cost a LOT more than molds to make metal. So even though Bones have been well received and are selling very well, Reaper has only been able to add to the line slowly—until now. Their Kickstarter project is going to allow them to jumpstart the process and make a lot more affordable Bones figures. They started with a very reasonable $20,000 goal that they quickly smashed through! They have passed the $565,000 goal as I type this—a truly remarkable feat!

So what does this have to do with you as a Paizo customer? I'm glad you asked! Reaper has just announced their first Pathfinder Bones stretch goal. The "We Be Goblins" stretch goal will bring nine Pathfinder goblin minis to the Bones line. Yep, you heard that right—nine!

The purpose of this blog is let you know about Pathfinder Bones, but it's also a heads-up from one gaming friend to another about this amazing Kickstarter. If you use miniatures at all in your game, you're going to want to get involved in this Kickstarter. You can support it at a number of different levels, but I really want to draw your attention to what Reaper calls the "Vampire" level, for backers who kick in $100. When this Kickstarter began, you got 30 Bones miniatures for that $100. Well, because Reaper keeps reaching more and more stretch goals, that $100 pledge currently gets you 132 Bones miniatures and a special metal Sophie (their iconic succubus) for that same $100 pledge! And it's only going to get better—the "Vampire" level is where the Pathfinder goblins will kick in!

When I personally got in on this Kickstarter, my $100 got me 44 miniatures. Now, because of the pledges of other gaming fans out there like me, I am getting the 132 figures plus the Sophie. And it is going to become even more because of the way the Kickstarter stretch goals work. As more and more people join into the Kickstarter at any level, but especially the Vampire level, we will pass more stretch goals and more minis will be added to my $100 Vampire reward level. At $605,000, we Vampire-level backers will all get 4 very cool demon miniatures, bringing our new total to 136. And then when the stretch goal after that gets hit—boom—NINE Pathfinder goblins added for the same $100 pledge. And each stretch goal gets you more cool minis.

You can see why I wanted to tell you about this. Right now, backers are getting Bones minis for well under a buck apiece—this is by far the best deal in miniatures that I have ever seen. And as more people join in, it gets better and better for all of us. And for Reaper, because they'll be able to get a whole bunch of new Bones figures out there.

There are nine days left in the Reaper Bones Kickstarter—it ends Saturday, August 25 at 6pm EST. If you are at all interested in miniatures, seriously think about pledging to this Kickstarter. What a great way to grow your miniatures collection AND help out a great game company like Reaper. (And I've been told that there is another Pathfinder stretch goal buried in that crypt somewhere. Can't wait to find out what it is!)

Yours in gaming...

And now a word from our friends at Reaper...

What Are Bones Gaming Miniatures?

Bones are the best plastic gaming models to hit the industry in the last decade. We've taken the best miniatures in the Reaper product line and converted them into plastic - high quality, low price. What more could you ask for? For more info, click here.

Why are we doing this Kickstarter?

Reaper Miniatures Bones Kickstarter is a project to ramp up the production of the Bones plastic miniatures line and to get you the miniatures you want now! And to make things even better, we're adding our officially licensed Pathfinder Miniatures line to our project!

Since the launch of Bones in March 2012, a full third of the figures we ship are Bones plastic gaming miniatures. We have eight pages of Bones suggestions going in our forum. It's clear that our fans want more of these Bones figures. And why not? They're awesome sculpts at a terrific price!

As it turns out, they're also really expensive to produce. The mold costs alone are astronomical. In order to grow this line, we can do it slow and steady over the next several years, or we can defer to you guys and launch a bunch of new ones as soon as possible. By the end of the year, we anticipate having 30 products in the Bones line. What this Kickstarter will do is at least double the Bones line to 60 total models: character models, new sculpts, big monsters... the sky's pretty much the limit.

All we need to kickstart this thing is your support.

What Do I Get For Supporting You?

We have a number of opportunities available for our supporters.

These include, but are not limited to, various apparel items, a chance to receive each of the new 30 Bones plastic models, a metal Kickstarter-exclusive Sophie model, Design-Your-Own-Miniature packages, not to mention some of the most valuable one of a kind Crown Jewel items from the Reaper archives. (And we have some incredible stretch goals in mind – we remain ever optimistic!)

Something for everyone who loves miniature gaming.

Now we're offering some of the most popular miniatures from the officially licensed Pathfinder Miniatures range. What do you have to do to get these Pathfinder Bones miniatures? Simple! All you have to do is pledge either the Vampire or Undertaker Levels from the Pledge List, and if we hit the Pathfinder Bones stretch goal, they'll be added to your Pledge Level at no additional charge! And if you want extras, simply add them to your pledge amount.

The first Pathfinder Bones stretch goal has been revealed. Go join in and pledge to the Reaper Miniatures Kickstarter project and bring them to life for everyone to enjoy!

The Kickstarter has funded, and in fact, it is now over $500,000 and at this point It has been running for over 20 days. There's just over a week left until the project closes on August 25th 2012 at 5:00pm CST. Hurry and get involved and let's see how many Pathfinder Bones we can uncover!

Thanks! That's also what has been surmised before, since it's the only metal figure in the bunch. Still a good deal for those of us who have no use for it.

Do those deep-dwellers look enough like Kopru to anybody?

Even after contributing at Vampire level there is so many more addons to pick, I didn't even include my namesake "mythos monster".

Sovereign Court

Just wait for the moment when your pledge gets over 200 and you realize you could double vampire pledge and trade both sophies in for 250 worth of minis....

I... I didn't consider that... this means that for just $31 extra, I can get all of the minis I'm currently down for, and double up on all of the Vampire minis!

Sovereign Court

Yeah. It's nuts.

Tell your friends, tell your family, tell random strangers in the street :)

We are now past the $2M mark.
This is insanity :) Or possibly: THIS. IS. REEEEEAPER!!!!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

This is such a good deal. I dont want unpainted minis and even I'm considering buying them - how stupid is that?

I hope they dont end up with a whole bunch of shiny, new moulds and a saturated market.

Liberty's Edge

I already know that I have to buy more copies of some of these, but 200 was all we could squeeze out this month. If I had known it was coming I would have taken time to save up money for this.

I suppose these will have to work for now. I doubt they will keep me and my mother busy for overly long. We both can paint at a respectable speed and with free time on our days off we may just paint unless its game day for us.

I don't think I'd call 11,000 people a saturated market at all.

That's the number of backers they're slowly inching towards. Out of all the people who know about Reaper miniatures and who might buy more minis in the future. Not to mention those who can't spend a large amount for the Kickstarter, but who'll buy the minis in smaller quantities afterwards.

Like I say, I hope you're right.

Please explain.

If you order two Vampire Pledges, you get two metal Sophies, so you can trade both Sophies in, for an extra $50 in miniatures. I think it was a simple 'slip of the tongue' so to speak.

Sovereign Court

That is what I meant. You can trade a sophie for 25 dollars worth of addons. So a double vampire is 200 dollars, with 50 dollars of addons for free.

Managed to get a friend to go in on a pledge together. Is it wrong that I'm deliriously happy about this?

Umm... no. Should it?

Am now one of the many Vampire + backers... and am giddy at the thought. I'll be adding the Orc pack + the half sized heros.

Anyone calculate just how many mini's come it on the Vampire pledge level?

Dark Archive RPG Superstar 2013 Top 32

Damn...

I'm currently pledged at $280. I'm wondering if it's worth it to bump the extra $20 and just go for Undertaker, then trade in the 3 Sophies for $75 worth of extras. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm....

It's a little unclear as to whether or not Undertaker is equal to 4 Vampires or 2. It looks like it started as 4, but Undertaker only gets 2 of each stretch bonus instead of 4... so maybe the math works out to approximately 3 Vampires.

Reaqper have been - if you scroll down to the version of the pledge about a third of the way down (the one in the appropriate place in the costings), they're summarising the total - at last stretch goal I believe it was 216 bones, plus Sophie

Grand Lodge

Whats this about trading in Sophie? How is that done and what do you get?

Grand Lodge

Got my answer via the video - OMG... Best.Deal.EVER.

Yeah, gonna try and talk my friend to trade in Sophie for the Nethyrmaul undead dragon. Our local Hobby Store owner ordered two Vampires, I think, one for himself, one for the store. I'm gonna see if we can't get a group shot of all the minis when they arrive. Would be awesome!

Grand Lodge

I just punched this out to about 10 friends

Yeah I'm dropping about 500USD into this thing.

Starfinder Superscriber

Saw some calculation that if you just get a Vampire (without extras) the real dollar valure is currently slightly over $1000. I'm not sure on this, as I'm not sure how much bones minis sell for, but either way, I'm freaking happy about it!

Reaper Bones FAQ wrote:

What is the typical cost of a Bones miniature in a retail store?

Currently all Single Bones miniatures are priced between $1.99 and $2.99. Packs with multiple miniatures are between $3.49 and $ 5.49

Obviously, this doesn't take into account the larger minis as this was posted 3 weeks ago, but it's a good baseline. 200 Mins at, call it 2.50, is going to be about $500. These prices are, I'm assuming, for the normal PC Minis, not the Giants and Demons and stuff. So I'm going to make a guess at closer to $650 total value.

The $1000 estimate was using the metal mini prices, since most of these are re-used sculpts.

I dont think it will get to the 2.24m stretch target... its a bigger gap than the previous stretches and with just 32 hours left I ain't sure it will get there... that said? OMG - I can't believe the OUTSTANDING value here. So excited.

Helaman wrote:

After the KS is over, you'll receive a pledge manager to tell Reaper what you'll be getting. One option is to forgo the Sophie miniature in the Vampire pledge. In return, you can select $25 of other stuff, excluding pledges.

If you check Kicktraq, they made $400,000 yesterday and if they match that today and tomorrow - the final total will be $700k higher or ~$2.8MM.

Currently Kickstarter is having an issue with proccessing new pledges. It is getting an error between Amazon and Kickstarter. That is why it hasn't increased in the past hour or so. Before then, it was going up a couple thousand dolars an hour, and it picks up significantly arround 11AM Eastern time and goes fast through the day.

Edit: also, so far today they have made over 100K. It took a few more hours yesterday to hit that number.

Contributor

Looks like the processing issue Caineach mentioned is over. Go pledge before it happens again!!!

Sczarni

I'm in at 200, some of my coworkers who do art, but not normally for minis are ordering some additional of the bonus ones through me, so my pledge is 550

I am an idiot... they are now at 2.2 million. DAAAAAMN.

Grand Lodge

If they want to drive a feeding frenzy in the last 24 hrs? put the last of the iconics on the table as stretch. I'd up my pledge past its 150+

I've been up all night for various reasons. Started watching the Pledge Amount about 9 hours ago. It was 2.1 Million almost exactly. So in 9 hours it's gone up almost $120,000. It was going up, on average, $10,000 an hour, and then sped up in the last couple hours.

I think we'll make the final Stretch Goal.

:) It will be met in about an hour.

$30K between 10 and 11 Eastern Time. Wonder what the next goal will be, and how fast it will be demolished.

Kicktraq now estimates this potentially hitting 3M. I would love to see this become #4 on all time kickstarters. It already is number 5.

I'm thinking there's one stretch goal left in this thing. Two would be amazing.

Thoughts?

I imagine all the fence sitters have to make a descision. And the descision is tasty with all the stretch goals. I think 3Mil is possible (and 2.75Mil probable). all the Kickstarters I have seen really ramp up as time ticks down.

Rofl, more like 20 minutes (from the time of your post).

Sovereign Court

Depends on what happens when they switch back to the 10 - 15 dollar extra pledge models. We've been coasting along on free additions and new pledgers for a few days.

MJinthePitt wrote:

I think we will hit 4-5 more stretch goals, with 150-200K between goals. We have more than 24 hours left, and yesterday they had 420K. We are blowing away yesterday's pace, and I'm guessing today will be ~600K (already at 175K). Then tomorrow I'm guessing will have ~500K for the partial day (closing arround 6pm Eastern Time). Kickstarters have exponential growth on the last days and people send links to friends.

Sovereign Court

Just hit a stretch goal, the next one is four golems added to the vampire pledge level.

Speaking of sending to your friends - spread the word, get more free minis! :)

MUST HAVE... and yeah, I am out there stumping for this.

Out of curiousity, for Pathfinder RPG what would you use the following monsters as?

Mythos Monster - the one with the big sphere

Which are basically mythos monsters.

They could also be used for some weirder oozes and ooze-like abberrants.

Just found this on the Reaper messageboards:

You will be able to use the PM to add to your pledge. We designed it to account for math errors, but it will have the side effect of allowing, for roughly 30 days, all users to add to their pledged amount.

moneys raised via the PM will not be able to unlock goals, as the drive will be over, but they will enable us to make more things for you as an individual.

We encourage you to pledge what you are able to now, to help the community unlock rewards, but understand if the PM must be used due to timing of finances.
