Not something I have heard of over in the UK. Could you explain further for me please?
Monte Cook released Ptolus in 2006, a massive tome based on his famous home campaigns of many years. It has been out of print for a while, although you can find it on ebay and other out of print sellers. Now, it will be available at drivethrurpg.com via print on demand in the form of 2 volumes.
I'll pick these up just so I can preserve the original precious...

He mentions it in his journal
Thanks. I just found it.
I had checked his News and Ptolus pages and didn't see a mention.

Sorry my question was not worded well. I own a copy of Ptolus that I got on release and which I have kept mint. What I don't know is what print on demand is? Those books he is holding look the part and I want in :)

Simple explanation is that when you order a copy, DTRPG will print one and bind one for you at that moment, then ship it to you.
This is opposed to a traditional printer than prints/binds several hundred/thousand copies of the book for payment up front, and having to sit on the stock until you sell it down.
Traditionally (but, things are getting markedly better in many respects), a POD copy won't necessarily be as good of quality as a traditionally printed book (though, they are GOOD quality, and remember, things are always getting better), and they're not as cheap per-copy (so, potentially lower profit margins for the "publisher").
It's a neat system that allows a lot of smaller entities to get their work in print without having to invest in a lot of stock. Check out Lulu for an idea of how it works. There's a number of other POD printers out there, of course.

Print on demand is a service now being offered by drivethrurpg.
For example, they also sell the formerly out of print Arcana Evolved also from Monte Cook. And Rappan Athuk reloaded from Necromancer via POD, in essence these books will now be available forever :)

Yeah no sign on Drivethru for a print Ptolus. :-(
I believe the test printing is being sold at Gen Con and it will have a general internet release shortly after. I can't seem to find where I read that though... It might have been Monte's twitter feed.

Here it is: Monte's Live Journal. Ptolus and other Malhavoc products will be available via print on demand after Gen Con.

GenCon Products
If you're looking for my products at GenCon, make sure to check out these places:
DriveThruRPG Booth 767: Look here for a number of Malhavoc Press products, back in print--including Ptolus! That's right, Ptolus is back as a print book, or rather books, because now the mammoth tome is a two-volume set. Copies will be extremely limited, so if you really want to pick one up at GenCon, I'd recommend getting over there early. Other print products include Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved, the Complete Book of Eldritch Might, and more. All of these--including Ptolus--will be available as print products from the DriveThruRPG website as well.

Can someone point it out to me?
Nothing to point you to. It'll be available some time after GenCon is over. Today is the last day of GenCon, so it's not available.

Anyone got any idea of cost?
I mean, he links to it in his journal, but DTRPG's site is really sucking lately, and telling it to show you product available in print isn't reliable, nor is there any link to show Ptolus as printable.
:(
They Cost me $150 at the CON as a pair.
I still bought them, but that is overly expensive IMO.
They came with PDFs, well it will as soon as Steve Wieck puts in the info from the Con.
On an aside note, DriveThruRPG is now the Publisher for White Wolf, they will now on handle the book printings for White Wolf

Have you seen the prices mentioned in the Looking for Ptolus thread?
Because I spent $200 on mine.
That is for an out of print book which does funky things to a price for a popular RPG. this is for a book that is in print and more prints will be coming.

I think I paid about $125 or $130 plus tax for my original copy when I purchased it through my friendly local gaming store. And that was the price from a preorder 3 months ahead, basically, as soon as the distributor had it in the database to order. And because I preordered, it came with a free adventure or something. I want to say it was the Night of Dissolution. Every one of the pdf's however, I had to pay for seperately, through DriveThruRPG, of which I think I purchased 4 of the pdfs as soon as they came out. Though I got a CD with a bunch of extra stuff on it as well. You got a bargain if you got the pdf's =D. It is a very limited edition sort of thing but the city is brilliant and you can pull all kinds of stuff from the book to help populate and bring to life any other city you want and if the double books are anything like the original, it will have an amazing strong spine.

I think you need to read up on how "print on demand" works, and why it's more expensive than conventional "print a bunch and stick it in a warehouse" printing.

I was not given the impression that it was a Print on Demand book. DriveThruRPG is now doing book publishing for White Wolf and I did not see a sigficant increase in the price of those books.

Quoting the DriveThru FAQ:
What's different about your printed books?
All print books that you order are printed to your order and then shipped to you. The books do not exist until after you order them! [Emphasis mine --SKR] Different titles are in softcover or hardcover, black and white or color interior. All books have full color covers. Please check the product's information page for details on the size, cover, and interior of the books you select.
As to whether or not the price increase is significant, (1) consider the percentage increase in the books price, then apply that increase to the original cost of the Ptolus book, and (2) are any of those WW comparable in size to the 672-page hardcover Ptolus, or 336 pages if cut in half?
The original one-volume book was $119.99 in print. Compared to that, $150 for POD is a steal.

I just took a look at their prices, my guess was that some of the books I was looking at where Either B&W or older prints. If DriveThruRPG is now the exclusive printer for White Wolf that makes me very sad since the books doubled in price and I am not willing to pay that much so most likely my collection of 700+ books for White Wolf is at an end.

DriveThruRPG's mandate from Sean P. Fanning is that "no RPG shall ever be unavailable" ... with a few (obvious) exceptions, they seem to be well on their way.
If that means I have to pay a bit more for a POD for a childhood nostalgia kick, or something more recent but out of print, then I personally think it's worth the expense.
I see Ptolus regularly going for $200+ on sites like NobleKnight, so $150 seems like a steal (not to mention, 2 books probably makes it a bit more manageable).
To each their own though.
