It Came from the Public Domain!

Friday, October 8, 2010

In penance for yesterday's blog post being all mean about not giving out new art and punishing folks and all that, I present to you four more monsters from the upcoming Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Bestiary 2! What do these monsters all have in common? They're all based on monsters that come from mythology or the public domain—see if you can recognize any of them! Look for Bestiary 2 in bookstores, hobby stores, and on paizo.com in November.

I can see why. Carrot cake is delicious, but stick cake just sounds like a bad idea.

Personally I like sticky cakes.

Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale!

If we're being thrown "Lovecraft" by Greg Vaughn, I'd say that Monster #3 could be either a shantak or a hunting horror.

Great preview art, though!

Dang that does sound like a cool monster!

That would explain the blackouts and waking up in strange places... :O

You know what confused the Hell out of me as a kid? The Wendigo shows up in the Hulk and fights Hulk and Wolverine, and basically looks like a big white hairy beast.

Then a few years later, there is this weird issue of Spider-Man where the Wendigo flies through New York during a snow storm while the entire piece is threaded through with a poem. But this time its a long green spirit looking thing.

I got to say I liked the Hulk Wendigo better.

What were we talking about?

Don't get them wet! And don't forget the double-damage from bludgeoning!

(I swear every time I hold my sister-in-law's I'm terrified they're going to break in my hand)

Goblin-dog.

That one at top left looks like something from American folklore called the Whirling Whimpus, but I'm probably mythtaken.

The wendigo is an easy guess.

And the other two... a ghost whale and somethign vaguely draconic (a kongamoto)?

Sorry, but for some reason I'd swear I remember those lines in connection with the Wendigo.

I thought a Dire Chihuahua is simply a regular rat. :)

It is, but it gets a +10 racial bonus to disguise checks to appear to be a house pet that may be somewhat canine in nature.

A shantak? Really? With those back spines?

Shantaks are often used as steeds within the dreamlands. Its going to be a bumpy ride.

If we statted up Lovecraftian monsters that were comfortable to touch, we'd be doing it wrong.

Are shoggoths all hugable?

Bendable? Bugable?
Foldable? Moldable?
Cuddly and holdable?
You say that they're Knids, all vile and vermicious?
I say you're wrong! They look simply delicious!

Given that my professional grief dog a) is a chihuahua and b) thinks he's a great dane, I vote for this.

[spoiler]I take Rocky to the vet and they ask his name. I say, "Rocky, though he also responds to 'Fuzzbutt' and occasionally 'Get over here, Damnit!'"

That is quite possibly the most disturbing Lovecraftian mashup ever imagined.

Ultimately, its just a piece of art. I get that.

But, dude, Randolph Carter flies upon a shantak in "Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath". Granted its summoned by Nyarlathotep and is a trick to take him to the throne of Azathoth, but still he rides it ... clings to it even. To quote the master:

And Randolph Carter, gasping and dizzy on his hideous shantak, shot screamingly into space toward the cold blue glare of boreal Vega; looking but once behind him at the clustered and chaotic turrets of the onyx nightmare wherein still glowed the lone lurid light of that window above the air and the clouds of earth’s dreamland. Great polypous horrors slid darkly past, and unseen bat-wings beat multitudinous around him, but still he clung to the unwholesome mane of that loathly and hippocephalic scaled bird.
-- H.P. Lovecraft "Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath"

Hideous? Loathly? Maned and hippocephalic? Yep, yep, and yep. But dear old HPL neglects to mention pointy spines on the shantak's back.

So I submit, you can cuddle up to your shantak. You just better do it quick before it deposits you at the sanity-shattering throne of big-daddy Azathoth.

I also submit that those "spines" on its back are actually spurts and swipes of grease and slime. Smear a layer of lard or crisco over a rhino, sit on it, then jump off and note how the dismount leaves spiny looking smears and swaths of sticky sludge to give evidence to your recent positioning atop the lumbering beast.

(And yes, the shantak does indeed have a "slippery" ability, which IS supported by other passages in "Dream Quest".)

(AND yes, I guess that does confirm the fact that the art is of a shantak.)

By the end of the year, everyone who's a Paizo employee will have unique avatars. I'm just getting ahead of things because the art that I wanted to change my avatar to finally came in!

James Jacobs wrote:

Actually, I really like this. It's frustrating when an employee has been active in a thread but then someone with the same Avatar comes in making a few comments that seem "out-of-character" if you're reading quickly and only glancing at the avatar rather than name for ID.

I can't wait for the Trapdoor Were-Chihuahua. It hides in débutante's purses and springs out at prey; unfortunately, afflicted infected victims must make Control Shape checks or revert into Paris Hiltons.

Out of curiosity are these avatars taken from art for future products (and if you don't mind me asking which future products?) Or have they been custom made?

According to James in another thread - both! The art is for an upcoming book, but it's creation for that book was at least partially influenced by James' need for a new avatar.

Hmm, that artwork does look familiar, though, but I can't quite place it.

Paizo Employee Creative Director

My new avatar was taken from an illustration that will be appearing next February in the upcoming "World Guide: The Inner Sea." Specifically, it's part of the half-page illustration that opens up the four pages about the Mwangi Expanse.

If the artwork looks familiar, that might just be because there's been awesome dinosaur illustrations for centuries. ;-P

We haven't "outed" any of the preview monsters, with the exception of the shantak which I sort of did accidentally (but not really).

It's not charybdis though. Charybdis has much different art.
