Bestiary 2
Cover Illustration
by Wayne Reynolds

With the GameMastery Guide off to print we need something new to start teasing you all with, and while the Advanced Player's Guide seems logical, being our next next big release, I like monsters more. So where should we look for previews of Bestiary II? Why, no farther than Pathfinder Adventure Path #33, as we've got a few homeless horrors in there that will be creeping into October's tome of terrors. See for yourself. And no, none of these are new creations for Bestiary II.

I'm belive that moster 1 is a Retriever.

Monster 2, hmm ...

Maybe an Allip?
The first thought that came to me was it was a well drawn Phaerimm, like the one on the cover of 'Nethril, Empire of Magic' but its obviously not that.

Monster 3 could be a Blue, but again that's a tough call.

Silver Crusade

I don't know what monster 3 is, but I want my players to meet it and kill it.

Goblin of some description?

We have Goblins, Hobgoblins and Bugbears (oh my). Demogoblin? Grey Goblin? More study necessary.

Unlikely, since the Retriever has already appeared in the first Bestiary.

The first one could be some kind of Formian, while the second could be a Belker.

Seems unlikely, since the retriever is already in the Bestiary.

EDIT: D'oh! Ninja'd...

Monster #1 actually appears in Pathfinder #34, so it's even more of a stealth preview than we thought!

And no, no one's been right on anything so far...

First two are stumping me...

Monster #3: Xvart or Meazel [no sense of scale with the pic]

I kinda hope three is the Hobgoblin again, but that's unlikely! I way prefer this art to the existing hobgoblin art. It's probably a fey.

I'm stumped though, keep in mind, it can't be a closed content monster, and is way more likely to be from Tome of Horrors than any of the Monster Manuals or the Psionics Handbook (not because of openness, because its just plain unlikely), so Xvarts, Blues, etc are of the table, and James will probably bludgeon anyone who says its a nilbog!

#1 looks like a Babylon 5 shadow. :)

And maybe #3 is a nilbog...

EDIT: oops, didn't read what vagrant-poet had written right before me.

The shadowy, gaseous creature with the humanoid arms is probably a Soul Eater from the first Tome of Horrors. The art is very similar in any case.

The other two, being a bug and a goblin-like humanoid are a bit more difficult to pin down. *Goes to look through his books*

True.

But it was 4 AM, and with visions of the 1st Edition Fiend Folio in my head, Demogorgon's little gofers came to mind with that pic.

Soul Eater seems likely. #3 could possibly be a skulk...

He certainly looks skulking.

Skulks are gray-skinned (when not using their chameleon effect) and hairless, so it could be.

I agree that monster 2 is likely a soul eater.

I am at a loss for monster 1.

That was my guess.

This.

For monster #1, the first thing that popped into my head was the story about the "spider-like" creatures that swarmed out of the bridge in Magnimar when they first discovered it was hollow.

Monster #3 is clearly Grimtooth, as you can see. Apparently this module is going to have a whole mess of traps in it...

Only one correct call so far. Shows we're doing out job right ramping up the awesome on a few of these oldies.

Not sure if this is an honest question or not... but to be precise, when Wes said "one correct" he actually meant "one of the monsters has been correctly identified." I could say which one, but I think he'd come over to my office and stab me in the neck for ruining his fun.

Are bebeliths in the Bestiary? That's what the one in the upper left hand corner looks like to me.

The one on the right looks a lot like a xvart, but the art looks too tall (not just because the picture is bigger, but because the limbs are long as compared to the torso - don't smaller creatures usually have shorter limbs?) Plus, his weapons look regular too well crafted and properly sized - I'd expect xvarts to have weapons a little too big for them or of poor quality.

Edit: Hmmm...Bebelith is in the Bestiary. Sword Spider?

Yeah, Grimtooth will do that to you!

Since the AP already featured Mites, maybe monster #3 is a Pestie?

Also, I'm starting to suspect that Lisa and Vic appropriated the addictive ink WotC uses to print Magic cards when they left to form Paizo. I'm normally pretty blaise about monster books, but I'm finding myself excited about this one.

Or, maybe it's because, now that I'm prepping to run Kingmaker and reading the Beastiary, I'm seeing that it is an improvement upon, rather than a mere rehashing of, the 3.5 version.

Shadow Lodge

Since we have B5 Shadows, will you also be statting up battlecrabs and the Shadow Planet Killer ?

Aha! Once I realized that the first preview creature had five arms and three legs, that helped narrow down the search considerably! I'm 99% certain it is a Derghodaemon from the Tome of Horrors.

As for the other one, I can't find anything in the ToH that is blue, goblinoid, and carries a club and crossbow, so I'm going to assume that at the very least the equipment has changed. The creature's size is also muddled, since we have nothing to guage it by. I almost want to guess that it is a Wood Giant, just because everyone else seems to think it is a small fey critter.

And how long until Mr. Morden arrives in Absalom to ask the PFS faction leaders "What do you want?"

THIS !

So I think we as a group have tagged two of three so far.

No doubt after dropping off Londo Mollari in Taldor.

Ahhh so you cannot confirm that there are Babylon 5 Shadows in Golarion. *plays with imaginary curley beard* Vedy Inderesting.

So maybe this is how Paizo is going to do Pathfinder SF. With the shadows placing a base there. We already have a nation swallowed up in darkness.

So which guesses are correct so far? Soul eater and derghodaemon?

Dark Archive

#1 Derghodaemon (Daemons??!??!?!?!?!?!)
#2 Soul Eater (ToH, Master of the Desert Nomads)
#3 Quickling?

Wait a minute... flips up page 7 of Realm of the Fellnight Queen... is #3 a spriggan?

I was wondering when someone would make that connection!

Why is it called a Stealth Preview? Was there a meeting I wasn't invited to?

So regarding #1, does that mean we are going to see full rules for the Daemon type of outsiders? A full range of Daemons to fill out the NE alignment bracket?

From the Bestiary II product description (emphasis mine):

Quote:
From classic creatures like undead dragons, hippogriffs, and the Jabberwock to denizens of the outer planes like daemons, proteans and the all-new aeons, the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary 2 is packed from cover-to-cover with exciting surprises and fuel for a thousand campaigns

So yes, I think we will be seeing creature type for daemons as well as the other aligned outsider types mentioned.

Okay, so Dergodaemon, Soul Eater and Spriggan!

Nice!

I have to say, that Derghodaemon is badass! I wonder what its aspect of death is!?

Would you consider 13 pages of daemons from CR 2 to 20 a full range?

I must say that is certainly a new artistic vision of the Dergodeamon... certainly much more frightening then the basket ball with a mantis head and spindly arms arms and stumpy legs from the 1e MM2.

Yeah........I think by most standards that would be considered a full range, lol

It's a trick. All three of the illustrations are just monkeys with different templates applied.

Everything is better with monkeys.

I suppose I can answer that: The fear of being eaten alive. In particular, of being eaten alive by insects that are chirping and swirling around your head to distract and madden and stupefy you. But mostly just the fear of an animal eating you while you're still alive and conscious of the ordeal.

*jaw drops* That's badass!

My players are fighting one, I don't care what level it is!
