Finally An End To All Those Paladin Threads...

Pathfinder Player Companion: Champions of Purity is on its way to stores and subscribers soon, and I thought I'd take this opportunity to point out some of my favorite parts of this book. While it has all the delightful crunch readers have come to expect in the Player Companion line (including new feats, magic items, spells, bardic masterpieces, subdomains, inquisitions, and a whole ton more I don't want to give away), the most exciting part about this volume for me is the careful and thought-out discussions regarding alignment and playing good characters. Some of the most interesting matters considered in this book include:

  • Explorations of the methodologies, advantages, and challenges of each good alignment. Examples of philosophies followed by characters of various good alignments ensure that no two chaotic good characters are the same, while suggestions on how to play alongside characters of opposing or conflicting alignments make certain your group doesn't fall apart just because the paladin caught the rogue stealing something.
  • Thoughts on putting good characters in bad situations and tips on how to handle moral quandaries as they apply to rules for characters such as paladins as well as for purely roleplaying purposes.
  • A discussion of redemption and how this might play into capturing villains both mortal and otherworldly. While that misled farmer stealing his neighbor's sheep might be redeemable, how does one go about handling a tiefling foe or even a crib full of goblin babies? Examples of possible penances and other ways characters might go about achieving atonement abound.

If you're tired of playing the same old lawful good holy knight or even just want to put a new spin on your chaotic good barbarian, Champions of Purity is an absolute don't-miss. Coming soon!

I imagine that there is no moral quandary if you find a crib full of goblin babies, as it means they have escaped their cages and likely have eaten the baby that was meant to be in that crib.

Nice blog/thread title. Made me chuckle. :D

This sounds excellent! Well done Patrick and Co.!

I like the title as well.

Yes, clever wording there! Also, I love the direction the companion line is heading.

I could apply this equally to human babies.

I can't help but think the title is wishful thinking.

Hey, I got to write some of those bits! I wonder what I said? :)

Can't wait to see this one all pulled together.

Anything about mount options ?

Animal Achive covered anyone with a mount, companion or familiar except paladins. Would this be the reason ?

Well, let's take some cues from how the various Player Companion books recommend things like using a wand of summon monster to deal with traps and take a guess!

"Being a paladin does not limit you to what is commonly referred to as 'Lawful Stupid'. In fact, a paladin who carries with them a backpack full of scrolls of atonement can do quite well in any situation, no matter what must be done."

Was I close?

Contributor

Nah, Cheapy. I think that bit went without saying.

I had little interest in buying Champions of Purity, but now I'm certain to. I'm consistently impressed by the content that Paizo chooses to include in their published materials. I very much look forward to reading the mentioned section(s). You all make me smile :)

Oh, and P.S.: No promises about this book actually putting an end to all those paladin threads.

The Goblin Babies brings back to my mind this amazing old thread. What might be the best techniques for rehabilitating all kinds of different normally-evil species? We covered stuff from Orcs and Kobolds all the way up to Neothelids.

I suspected as much. Still looking forward toit though. :)

Of course, the real question here is "Are Goblins Civilized?"

Need this

And hey, it's the badass cover guy from Blood of Angels! Now I'm wondering if "Paragon" is a thing in this book. And if so, what?

Got super high hopes for that redemption material. :)

Clutches of goblin babies should be left as orphans on the steps of the nearest temple of Desna.

Make sure you check back every couple of years just to see how things are going.

I'm looking forward to reading about situations where Law and Good don't always agree, and what's a poor paladin to do about it?

Poor paladin stuck in Cheliax.

That's another historical figure I'd love to take a swing at.

Him and Arnaud Amalric.

I can't help but suspect PCs will probably be fighting someone like those two somewhere along the line in Wrath of the Righteous. Bring. It. On.

Careful there Mikaze, some of us study and defend Little Phil rather seriously.

You don't have to KILL the goblin babies, you let them loose to perpetuate the dungeon ecology. That way, other adventurers can benefit from the xp too.

Maybe Paizo could develop a Player Companion about netiquette and the futility of academic arguments with total strangers? Oh, nevermind. No one would have any interest in reading that.

Wait, didn't General Sheridan defeat the Shadows and unite the galaxy before leading a fleet back to Earth and overthrowing a corrupt Earth President and his totalitarian regime?

Actually, Interstellar Alliance President John Sheridan in the Babylon 5 series was/is/will be a descendant of General Sheridan.

I am curious if the book will cover how different faiths approach being good, much like paladin codes were covered in Faiths of Purity. Different faiths will have different takes on how to respond to a given situation. (A paladin of Torag, a paladin of Sarenrae, a paladin of Shelyn and a paladin of Erastil may come to a dilemma from very different places and have different resolutions of the dilemma.)

Are you referring to the Burners of Hulrun? While I wouldn't mind smiting a few of those sadists I was under the impression the primary villains where going to be the demons and cultists of Deskari. Though I certainly wouldn't mind a few Numerian-based foes as well (can anyone say Annihilators)? ^_~

Yeah, or at least those like them. Something to kick in the face in-between the demon fighting. Or during, considering how the Worldwound so easily corrupts. Heck, if it starts in Mendev something like that might be one of the first conflicts the PCs have to face. It could be even more satisfying if the goal of giving the persecuted Sarkori back a homeland is pushed along with stopping the demonic invasion itself.

(been avoiding details like the plague now that they've started to come out)

Gah! Can't stop thinking about what the Paragon could be.

Is it a paladin archetype?

Is it some other option open to other classes(and all three good alignments)?

Nice, start off the product about paladins with one giant lie. Off to a great start.

Now wheres the cake?

Darnit, but I was really hoping for that Reformed Netizen feat. It was going to send my Cyber-Diplomacy through to roof.

When 1918 finally drew to it's bloody close, a big chunk of the planet who were still breathing drew a collective sigh of relief, content that they had survived "The War To End All Wars".

As long as class with a built in self destruct button exists, there will always be nerd-raged threads centered on the subject of having it pushed.

And then let it out in a hacking Spanish Flu cough.

What is the name of the paladin in the picture?

I fear those threads will just have more fodder.

It was actually Dvezda Plague, which had previously destroyed the human population in Iobaria's northern reaches. The plague traveled from Golarion to Earth by way of a party of adventures using Baba Yaga's hut, who ended up in 1918 Russia.

Only the paladin was unaffected.
