Death is Always in the Cards (Or Maybe it Isn't)

Let's talk about death, baby. It's become a hot-button subject since the launch of Pathfinder Adventures, where a legion of fans were presented with the choice of using a "permadeath" option or letting the fear of death fall by the wayside. There are lots of good reasons why death works the way it does in the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, so three of us are providing you with three very different perspectives on the subject. Mike will talk about death in the home version of the physical card game, Nathan will talk about death in the digital game, and Tanis will talk about death in organized play.

Short blog today, because this week brings the Origins Game Fair to fabulous Columbus, Ohio. It's a 5-day show, and if you're in the region, I highly recommend checking it out. Good food, great games, and a wide range of stuff to entertain every type of gamer. In the last few years, the board and card game area has gotten bigger and better, and the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is part of that growth.

Hexes and Foes!

It's Class Deck preview time again! Before we dive into the mysteries of the Witch, I want to note that the monthly parade of Class Deck releases will go on hiatus for a little while starting in November. We had originally intended to put Class Decks on hiatus during the six months that we're releasing Mummy's Mask, but production delays earlier in the year caused the Summoner Class Deck to slide into October alongside the Mummy's Mask Base Set and Character Add-On Deck. We're therefore starting the hiatus a month later than we had intended.

PaizoCon attendees will get the opportunity to play Season of the Runelords all the way up through Adventure 3: Into the Mountain and will even get a sneak peek at Adventure 4: Abjurant Halls of Envy. I just wrote the mechanics for a scenario currently called "Look! A Monkey!" which I expect to be the start of a long and extended death-glare aimed in my direction by you, the fans. Just remember that you're the ones who went into something called the Abjurant Halls of Envy, and complaints can be delivered directly to me. I'm the one who looks like Mike Selinker.

Simply the Quest

When I joined Obsidian Entertainment last year, because of my background as a tabletop game designer, I was asked if I wanted to work with the Pathfinder Adventures team. Even though it meant having to work with Mike Selinker—Hi, Mike!—it sounded like an awful lot of fun to go back to my card game roots for a bit and, frankly, I flat-out love the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. So I said yes—of course I'd love to see what cool things we could bring to the game on the electronic side that simply aren't possible in the physical space.

Nobody Expects the... Oh, Wait—You *Are* Expecting the Inquisitor Deck Preview?

I'm back with a peek at the May Class Deck release, the Inquisitor Class Deck. The iconic inquisitor, Imrijka, is a bad-ass half-orc with a heart of gold who debuted in the Wrath of the Righteous Base Set. She's lethal with a bow and, as a melange of ranger and cleric, Imrijka takes pleasure in smiting the unfaithful from a distance.

Obsidian Tells a Tale

When Obsidian Entertainment and Paizo started talking about Pathfinder Adventures, I was most excited about the prospect of bringing the story of Rise of the Runelords to life. A little background: I started at Obsidian in 2007 working on Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, and one of the first things I did was join a group of coworkers playing Rise of the Runelords. The story stuck with me. And when I started playing "Burnt Offerings" in the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, it all came flooding back. I loved the way Mike Selinker, Chad Brown, and all of the designers at Lone Shark Games used the mechanics of the cards to tell a story. Local Heroes stood out to me right away, as did Foul Misgivings later. Since story has always been a priority at Obsidian, I knew that we could bring the theme and drama of the Adventure Path to the forefront of the digital version.

Magic and Mystery—Oracle Class Deck Preview

In the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, the oracle is a divine spellcaster driven by devotion to an ideal rather than to a particular deity. The specific source of an oracle's abilities is a mystery, and each oracle is burdened with a curse of some kind, for power has a price. When we designed the first version of Alahazra the Oracle for the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, we found ourselves drawn to the idea of prophecy and foresight. That idea carried through into the new character designs for the Oracle Class Deck.

Obsidian Gets Difficult

A couple of weeks ago, we debuted Pathfinder Adventures on the Obsidian Plays Twitch Stream. Viewers got to see a new feature that many card game players have been begging for: adjustable difficulty. Now you can play in several modes: Normal, Heroic, and Legendary Difficulty, with or without permanent character death. To kick things off, I played Black Fang's Dungeon on Legendary Difficulty with 6 characters. Even though I've played Black Fang literally hundreds of times at this point, I still sweat bullets in this, my favorite play mode.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game—Skull & Shackles Base Set

Cartmanbeck's Best Character Ever—Alahazra

Alahazra, the iconic oracle, made her first Adventure Card Game appearance in the Skull & Shackles Base Set. She may look weak at first, with her paltry d4s for Strength and Dexterity, but she sees things that others can't, and uses that information to beat down on enemies, acquire cards, and close locations like a boss. You see, S&S Alahazra has a d12 for her Charisma, and she also uses that for her Divine checks. This means that when it's time to cast an offensive spell, she's often going to deal a ton of damage, especially with her final power giving her an extra +2 on all spells that have the Attack trait. She also has a great chance of recharging her spells with that high Divine check... but even when she fails a recharge check, she gets to trade any discarded card with the Divine trait for any other one (so a blessing for a spell, perhaps?) at the end of her turn.

Paul's Best Character Ever: Lini

I’ve stood by as my fellow designers on the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game have spoken their pieces on which character they believe to be the best ever and I’ve held my tongue. Why? Because, though I’ve known all along why they were wrong, I needed to bide my time. I needed to wait until all the pieces were in place, all the correct products produced and available to the fans... all the evidence available, so I could show definitively and without fear of serious rebuttal that the best character ever is Lini.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game—Rise of the Runelords Adventure Deck 2: The Skinsaw Murders

What's New With Obsidian's Adventure Card Game?

Back when we started this project, I worked out the scope of the game with the execs at Obsidian. André Nguyen created a great mockup of gameplay in Flash that helped get everyone at Obsidian and at Paizo on board (I may share some screens from that version at some point). We agreed on a pretty limited set of features to begin with—enough so that you could play through the Base deck of Rise of the Runelords. I knew a three-scenario game would be enough to prove the game out, but not enough to bring to market. As development continued and our confidence in the product grew, we kept building upon what we had piece by piece, carefully increasing the scope over time. With each additional piece, we added a lot more content and improved presentation—well beyond our original plans.

When Should We Errata a Card?

There is a very energetic debate going on the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game forums about the Wrath of the Righteous Base Set character Alain and his trusty equine buddies. The Lancer power of "Recharge a card (▢ or put it on top of your deck) to search your deck or discard pile for a card that has the Mount trait and add it to your hand" allows an already formidable warrior to keep exploring as long as he has at least one Mount in his hand.

It's Dangerous to Go Alone... But, You Get ALL the Stuff!

The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is a cooperative game for 1 to 4 players, with an expansion for 5 or 6 players. When I tell people this at conventions, I usually end up repeating it, because "1 to 4 players" rolls naturally off the tongue, and so many people miss the "1" at the start. When we first launched PACG, true 1-player games were relatively rare, and my own experience suggested that most people were listening for that high number, not the low one.

Best (Dressed) Characters Ever

There are many ways to attempt to win at adventuring. You can pry up every loose board in the dungeon to drain the local economy of every last mote of gold dust. You can gather wild tales of that time you defeated a Vulture Demon with nothing but a sharpened chicken bone. Or, if you don't like your friends much, you can be the last one standing when the battle ends. But wealth is hollow, tales can be fabricated, and standing alone is... well, lonely. The true pathfinder of style wins by making it look good, period.

(You might also wish to familiarize yourselves with the characters' associated roles; role text can be found on the freely downloadable ACG character sheets.

What do Rambo, MacGyver, James Bond, Doctor Frankenstein, and Mad Max have in common? Besides making one hell of an adventuring party, they all know how to use SCIENCE! to turn themselves into a veritable army. Of course, we could instead save space on that camel and ride with the one hero who can do it all: Damiel, the best character ever.

When we were designing the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords Base Set, I proclaimed loudly that I wanted a necromancer as a character. Chad's Best Character Ever: Seelah

When I talk to people about the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, I am inevitably asked, "Who is your favorite character?" For me, it's a bit like asking to choose my favorite child. As the lead developer for the game, I spent a lot of time and attention on every character, getting to know the good, bad, and awesome of each one. My honest answer is this: "My favorite character changes all the time. As I dive into each character, I really get to know its ins and outs, and usually, it becomes my favorite, at least for a little while."

Choose Your Own Adventure—How to Make Cards for the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game

Before I get into this week's blog, let me tell you the best thing that happened to me at a fantastic PAX East. Through designer Chad Brown, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game fan Jim Wnorowski contacted me at the con about helping with his wedding proposal to his girlfriend, Sarah. As I came out of my Tabletop Deathmatch panel, Jim flagged me down. He "introduced himself," and then introduced me to Sarah, a self-proclaimed fan of my games. Jim then asked me if I had any promo cards.

Feast Your Eyes on the Island of Empty Eyes (and the Feast of Spoils)!

Once upon a time, there was a girl who had to write a blog. And she really didn't want to because she was sick and could only see out of one eye and because it was Thanksgiving morning. She turned on the parade (because that would help productivity, obvs) and things didn't get any better. Apparently "parade" now means listening to the hosts attempt to make witty banter in between random performances of Broadway songs. She had signed up for giant balloons and marching bands, not this random showcase of songs from Broadway shows that paid money to be featured. She had reached the point where she was a) angry at a parade and b) had not actually written more of her blog because she was TOO BUSY BEING ANGRY AT A PARADE. Great Googly Moogly! Just as she realized that the marching bands and balloons probably hadn't reached the witty banter station and the performances were just filler until then, the marching bands and balloons showed up. And she lived happily ever after and kindly elves wrote her blog for her.
