Let No Savior Go Unpunished

Heading into the fifth adventure in the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path, we've already saved Sandpoint (again), discovered and solved some disturbing problems with a variety of giants (hill, stone, -kin, undead, etc), cornered and defeated a pair of lamia cleric twins what seemed like a dozen times, and met the stone giant necromancer Mokmurian (and hopefully taken his club)! Looking around the ancient library lair, you find important-looking references to a lost storehouse of Thassilonian magic known as the Runeforge.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Fortress of the Stone Giants (Rise of the Runelords Adventure Deck 4)

Like a Rolling Stone...

Having run into some friendly rangers, not-so-friendly rangers, downright unfriendly rangers, and even an ex-ranger in the Hook Mountains, the party heads back down from the mountain peak to the bucolic coastal city of Sandpoint for some much-needed rest and relaxation. Just one problem: all the stone giants.

The Battles of Marathon: The Pathfinder ACG at BoardGameGeek.Con

A few weeks ago, most of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game development team landed in Dallas with a mission: to play all 30 sessions of the Rise of the Runelords campaign by the end of BoardGameGeek.Con. That meant six sessions a day for five days, playing adventures we hadn't opened since the playtests in February. For us, it was a trip down memory lane.

It's a Christmas Massacre!

December's Pathfinder Adventure Card Game release is The Hook Mountain Massacre, the third Rise of the Runelords Adventure Deck. In this chapter of the story, the stalwart heroes are asked to investigate Fort Rannick, a ranger outpost near Hook Mountain. Fort Rannick is home to the Order of the Black Arrows, a cadre of rangers that have kept the local ogre problem at bay for decades, but now the outpost is ominously silent.

Shiver Me Timbers! A New Pathfinder Adventure Carrrrrrd Game Experience!

Ahoy, landlubbers! I'm Gaby, one of Mike's developers on the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. I'd be remiss if I didn't begin by thanking you all for your support of the game. Thanks to you, the game is doing so well that we're already working on another set! Developing this game has been a total blast, and it's been so much fun to watch everyone enjoy something I got to help create.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords Base Set

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Marathon at BoardGameGeek.Con

The website BoardGameGeek.com has been an extraordinarily fruitful discussion site for the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. After its release in late August, the Rise of the Runelords base set had an epic run at #1 in the Hotness, and has stayed in the top ten ever since. It's had over half a million page views. The game just got into the all-time top 50 games and the top 5 thematic games only a couple months out of the gate. And just like the folks on the Paizo messageboards, the commenters at BGG were tremendously helpful in helping us get the wording right on an updated version of the PACG rulebook (click to download).

Something Wicked Arrives Soon!

In addition to being constantly surrounded by a cadre of mindless undead, Zerren has picked up one of the favored tricks of the heroes: a mirror image effect! To top it off, the foul necromancer deals poison damage, neatly bypassing many forms of protection. All in all, we're hoping that Caizarlu is someone that you'll love to hate, and he's just the first of many. You'll also encounter ghosts, ghouls, ghasts, haunts, strange abominations, and more ghouls (more ghouls!) as you unravel the riddle of The Skinsaw Murders.

Going the Distance for the Adventure Card Game

What lengths would you go to in order to play the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game? Pictured below, we have a webcam taped to Colin's head, so John can see the cards we draw. The people involved in this ridiculousness? Colin Webster, Jen Broyles, John Compton, Josh Foster, Nani, and myself. The worst part? We have 27 Pathfinder Society GM stars between the lot of us.

Counting Our Blessings: The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Blows Off Gen Con’s Doors

That's all it took for Paizo to sell out all of its stock of our new Pathfinder Adventure Card Game's base set at the Gen Con Game Fair. In fact, an hour before the hall opened to the public, hundreds of "Very Important Gamers" had queued up to buy their copies. I tried to shake all of their hands. Well, one hand per person. So half their hands.

The Better Part of Valeros: Brashness vs. Caution in the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game

For this installment of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game blog, game designer Mike Selinker and developer Gaby Weidling stake out positions on whether it's better to be brash or cautious in the game. We join them in mid-session.

Don't Need Be No Sissy Bard, Get You Promo Goblin Card!

The release of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is just a few weeks off, bringing the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path to your game table in an entirely new way. Of course you can expect murderous cultists, inbred ogres, armies of giants, slithery seductresses, ancient dungeons, and all the rest of the deadly monsters and evil schemes that make Rise of the Runelords one of the greatest fantasy adventures ever. But I know what you're really waiting for: more goblins... and by extent, more goblin songs.

The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Meets the Public

In the last couple weeks, I got my wish. First at the GTS Distribution Come and Play Day, then at PaizoCon, we took the shrinkwrap off our new creation. The first reaction from everyone was, "Wow, that's a big box." As I showed the game with all of its expansions nestled in the tray, everyone started to appreciate the intricacy of the planning on this game. Over 1,150 cards and all of their containers fit nicely in the box.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Preview: Upcoming Developments

As the August 15 release date, and the July 5—7 demos at PaizoCon approach, I've been given the opportunity to pull back the curtains and talk about the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game a bit. As a developer for the game, I've spent much time and effort translating the Rise of the Runelords storyline and elements of the Pathfinder rules and campaign setting into a new medium. One of our biggest challenges was keeping the flavor of the world and of the RPG intact while keeping the card game fun, exciting, and respectful of the established traditions of Pathfinder.

Return to the Runelords

My favorite part of the new Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords is the opportunity it gave us to revisit Rise of the Runelords in art form. There was only so much room for art in the original adventurers, and while we were able to order a bunch of new art for the Anniversary Edition of the book, there was still more that needed to be illustrated. This card game gave us a chance to right that wrong!

The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Gets Ready to Fly!

As I write this, the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game (which I described in an earlier blog) is getting ready to go to the printer. We're incorporating the last bits of feedback from playtesters and developers, templating the cards for consistency and flavor, and rearranging the rulebook so that it's fun and easy to read. This is the end of the development process, the point where a game designer gets ready to bid farewell to his design as it walks out the door for a rich new life.

Mike Selinker on the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game

Mike Selinker on the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Tuesday, October 30, 2012 So, there is an announcement on the Paizo blog about the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game going into semi-open playtests. The collaborative deck-building game (which is neither completely collaborative nor completely deck-building, but work with me) is probably the best game system I've ever designed, and I'd like to tell you a little bit about it. ... The basic concept is this: It's a cooperative game for one to six...

Playtest the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game

Playtest the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Friday, October 12, 2012 Paizo is pleased to report that in just a few short weeks, we're expecting to begin the playtest for next year's Pathfinder Adventure Card Game (known to some of you by the code name Project Swallowtail). Because playtesting a card game isn't quite as simple as letting everybody download a PDF, it's not going to be quite as open as our RPG playtests have been, but if you'd like to get involved, read on to find out how that...
