New Adventure Path: Waking Tigers

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

The new Adventure Path has been announced: Waking Tigers. Here is the description:

A troubling conspiracy is unraveling in the heart of Hwanggot, but the wrong people stand accused of orchestrating it! Delve into two different timelines in this adventure as investigators uncovering the conspiracy in the past and defending themselves in court in the present. Can you discover the truth and prove your innocence?

So, a new Tian Xia Adventure Path. Featuring a court trial? Why not?

Liberty's Edge

Thank you for the info.

Sounds good. I wonder how they deal with the PCs in the present not being yet built through the events of the past.

I also wonder which 2 other iconics we will get for this AP in Tian Xia. The Witch might be one, but I am stuck on the second.

Maybe the iconic for one of the new classes is from Tian Xia too.

Interesting...

A (law) court-focused AP will hopefully be a good fit for an investigator.

I remember when one of the microfiction blogs in the lead up to Tian Xia World Guide came out, the author showed up in the blog comments (RIP) to talk about their love of Gong'an, chinese mystery fiction about Holmesy government magistrates. Seems like we're getting a whole AP in that vein!

Sounds like the main action of the "present" timeline will be your lawyer arguing on your behalf, which the PCs will have some influence over while observing their right to remain silent. Presumably casting mid-rank spells in court will be frowned upon.

I have to admit, when I heard the phrase "fantasy Korean courtroom drama AP with adventuring flash-backs" my immediate response was "if they pull this off this may genuinely be the best AP in all of 2e"

Dear gods there's so much potential there! It could be so so so so good! And it's a great option to flesh out a part of the setting that's still pretty light on info.

Hmm... I'll be honest, I'm pretty indifferent to the AP itself. It didn't really grab me. I understand the potential appeal, but it's not the kind of hook that would pique my interest even before the story itself.

On the other hand, I'm extremely interested in the fact that the story takes place in Hwanggot. The reason for my thoughts is quite simple: it's one of my least favorite nations on the continent, which I personally find structurally useless for the narrative due to the way it's described. But here it will be accompanied by a country guide. This means it's possible that its appearance will be gently reworked in the second and first editions, which I personally would be more than happy about if something worthwhile comes out of it.

I am not familar with that sort of Chinese fiction, I wonder what tropes and vibes is associated with it?

There's a great trilogy by Barry Hughart, the Tales of Master Li and Number Ten Ox, that does investigations of Chinese folklore mysteries based on real Chinese mythology and stories.

The first, Bridge of Birds, is EXCELLENT and won the World Fantasy Award. Number Ten Ox is a huge, simple peasant boy whose village has all the children catch a bizarre plague. He's sent to hire a sage to solve/cure the problem, and finds Master Li, an extremely wise, extremely drunk, extremely old ("if only I could be ninety again, but you'll have to do it"), extemely ruthless, but somewhat ethical ("there is a small flaw in my character") former imperial magistrate and provincial governor who retired to do investigations. To solve the quest to heal the children the duo have to free ghosts, commit a murder ("hopefully we'll find someone who truly deserves it") to trigger a necessary funeral, kill tyrants (three times), steal secrets, liberate great treasures, get arrested, escape unescapable dungeons (three times), reform the wicked, uplift the weak, uncover ancient mysteries, and finally restore a lost goddess whose very existence had been erased from history.

i've already mentally scheduled this in for my group, although we're a long way off!
