Large PCs and bulk conversion

Rules Discussion

Hey everyone, I just wanted to check on something. I'm building a centaur PC and just discovered the bulk conversion chart. It says that large creatures treat items of 1 bulk as light. My centaur has an encumbered bulk of 20. Does this mean my PC can carry 200 items that each weigh one bulk?

As a follow up, the conversion only applies to items that specifically weigh 1 bulk, so a 2 bulk item wouldn't be converted to 1.1 bulk, right? I was discussing this with my group because I noticed in Pathbuilder my centaur had 0 bulk accounted for when wearing leather armor, wielding a gun sword, and having an adventurers pack and repair kit. All of those are 1 or 1.2 bulk. Is my character actually only carrying 4L (backpack, gun sword, leather armor, repair kit) or is it more than that?

Thanks!

Creatures of sizes other than Small or Medium need items appropriate to their size. These items have different Bulk and possibly a different Price. The Differently Sized Items table provides the Price and Bulk conversion for such items.

Your items, being fitted for a large creature should get the size adjustment for their bulk.

In case of Medium -> Large it's doubling their bulk.

So a leather armor (large) weights 2 bulk.

And since it's 2 bulk and not 1 it doesn't downgrade to L.

Oh, thanks, I had missed that before. That is a lot more reasonable.

I think Shroudb Has it correct.

Your bulk limit doubled. So if it was 10, it becomes 20.

Items fitted for your size have the bulk doubled, which Pathbuilder may not be doing correctly (I've never looked). But a 1 bulk armor, becomes 2 bulk, and wouldn't be affected by the "bulk exchange rule" that converts 10 items of 1 bulk into 1 bulk for you.

But 10 medium sized bulk 1 items are still only 1 bulk. So you could haul a lot of medium sized armor for your friends.

Yeah, that sounds right.

This whole system gets very silly when dealing with carrying loot you find while adventuring, which is usually medium size, though. A medium longbow is 2 bulk, so for you its 2 bulk.

A medium longsword is 1 bulk, so for you it's L bulk.

A medium shortsword is L bulk, so for you it's negligible bulk.

That means that on a medium character finding medium gear, 1 longbow = 2 longswords = 20 shortswords, in terms of bulk carrying capacity.

But for you finding medium gear, it's 1 longbow = 20 longswords = ? shortswords. Since the shortswords are now negligible, the limit is "ask your GM". It's never made any sense to me at all.

I've found that tools often don't handle this very well and manual intervention may be required to get it to behave. When I had a Sprite player in Foundry it definitely didn't handle it correctly (though that was quite a while ago) and I had to override the character's encumbrance limits to make it functional at all. Haven't had one in Pathbuilder lately.

Yes, it's one of the reasons my players' Large dragon character could carry her party on her back. It's pretty sweet.

Horizon Hunters

It's a little different for a Giant Instinct Barbarian that is Large... his rage only works with a Huge weapon! A pole arm goes from Medium/2 bulk -> Large/4 bulk -> Huge/8 bulk.

And if you take the Raging Thrower feat to give yourself a ranged weapon, then a Huge javelin is 2 bulk. That 20 bulk sure gets used up fast!

The real gains are in items that don't need to be sized for you, like potions, scrolls, and other miscellaneous tools.

Leather armor is Light. Large leather armor is one Bulk, which is Light for a Large character. So far working out perfectly.

And adventurers' pack is 1 Bulk, though a little awkward to convert since that's the total Bulk of several items--but the worst interpretation for you is that a Large pack is 2 Bulk. But it's 2 Bulk in a backpack, so doesn't count against your Bulk Limit.

Your repair kit and gun sword should add up to 6, though.
