Automatic progression rule question.

Rules Discussion

I know ABP rule says that statistic item bounus for gear no longer exists saying this right here

"Items that normally grant an item bonus to statistics"

But do items like the Slick rune that give very specific bonus to escape or squeeze also included? If not can you explain what kinda items are available to give my players

This would be a big help thanks!!

ingeneral, the abp has a few holes like that, or with stuff like Alchemical items (which everything is an item bonus) and etc.

an easy solution would be to change the potency bonus to item bonus and leave the items as they are. So, if you have a "potency" bonus of +1 to a skill, but you have a specific bonus for an activity of +2, then the +2 superseeds the +1 and is used as normal.

elsewise, you must look at all the items that provide item bonuses that are at a +1 above the normal (like the alchemicals and specific stuff) and have them provide a stacking +1 bonus instead.

for general magic items that still work fine with abp it's mostly stuff like abilities/day, elemental stuff (damage, resistances, etc), speed and movement types, and etc.

For a houserule patch of ABP and its holes regarding item bonuses, I change the item bonus on spells, consumables, or other short-duration, limited usage effects to be a potency bonus. It still doesn't stack with a potency bonus that you would get from ABP. And it doesn't work on permanent magic item effects (because ABP is already giving those out without the items). But it does allow things like Mage Armor and Mutagens to work like they are supposed to.

Yeah, that's the best way I've seen it handled is spells and other non-permanent effects become potency bonuses. That way, alchemical items can still be relevant because they provide a higher numerical bonus than what ABP is going to currently offer you, but doesn't stack with any potency bonus you might already be receiving. You could even do that with bonuses from permanent items, but it's not generally going to work out in favor of the player, except maybe on picking up (additional) skill bonuses. But thematically you shouldn't do it because the whole "idea" is that the sort of magic that does that doesn't exist and it's innate to individuals.
