Mokmurian's CoCT

Recruitment

1 to 50 of 115 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

This will be the recruitment thread for a Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign I hope to run soon.
Any class/race will be allowed, and evil characters are discouraged for party cohesion reasons, though any character can be submitted for consideration.
25 available points for point-buy score generation.
Two background traits will be available, or three background traits and one flaw. One of these traits should be a campaign trait from Curse of the Crimson Throne, available here through AoN.
Any first-party source featured on Archives of Nethys is available.
The background skills variant rule will be available.
Submissions will be open until February 19th, at which time I will select five characters to form a party. If anyone has difficulty making this, I am more than happy to extend the recruitment period on request. Players should hopefully have at least a passing interest in roleplaying their character, and while I by no means expect a full biography, I would like at least a few sentences regarding how the character was wronged by the elderly crime lord Gaedren Lamm (details are available in the Player's Guide, linked HERE). Experience is not necessary, and new players are encouraged to apply.
I have a somewhat busy schedule, but will do my best to post at least once daily.

I'd love to get into this. Curse is a great story. Here is my submission.

Evidio Null is a Varisian, a skilled wrestler/pugilist/tough guy. He has worked as muscle for a few criminals around the city.

Evidio's parents disappeared a few years ago, and he has raised his little sister ever since. When she disappeared, he nearly lost his mind looking for her. And when he found out that Lamm was involved in her disappearance, he was determined to get her back or at least get revenge.

Found a character I had already worked up, that I like.

I have to make some adjustments. He's a 20 point build and not a 25 point build, and he's built using the Elephant in the Room Feat Tax adjustments. Both of those changes will prove pretty invasive mechanically, BUT!

The story and description shouldn't need to change at all.

I just need to update the mechanics.

I'll explicitly post again once I have completed that task.

Here's my submission, a tough-as-nail Cleric of Abadar, who can be a handful in a fight in spite of her desk job.

Background:

Spoiler:

Whe she was just forty, Ernhild left behind an abusive household in Janderhoff for Korvosa, where she had an aunt still living. She was young, inexperienced, and poor, and struggled to land a small job as a bouncer in a shady inn where criminals, sailors, prostitutes and beggars alike came to drink their sorrow away. That was where she was first heard of shiver, and where to get it, and who would sell it, and once she had been convinced nothing else would provide her relief, she bought a dose. And another. And another- slowly taking more or more of the drug as her senses dulled over years. She was finally found convulsing on the pavement by a night patrol- and it took all the skills of the clerics at the nearby temple of Abadar to save her life.

Miraculously, after a few weeks of constant screaming and pleading, she survived and recovered enough to stand before the judges without external help. She pleaded guilty, and was sent in jail, where she had much time to think of a way to turn her life around once her sentence would be over.

Still, it's not every day former prisoners return to the temple of Abadar to ask to serve the congregation.

When it was discovered that she could channel divine energy, to kick her out became out of question, and after an additional five years of hard work, she officially became a cleric. Her « past » and special dedication to the poor, the sick, and the lonely even made her fairly well-liked by the lowest classes.

Yet the drug addicts that Ernhild frequently nurses prove that shiver is still a lucrative market in the poorest districts of Korvosa. It’s been more than ten years since she last bought a dose, and yet, the names of Korvosa's dealers haven't changed. Especially one. Gaedran Lamm.

Dwarves live a long time, locked behind walls of stone. Threats usually come from the inside, and they have learned to identify and eradicate them quickly to protect the group.

They also never forget a grudge.

I'll submit Odver Trask! He's got the trait Missing Kids

I think I have correctly made all of the updates.

A man returning to his roots, pulled to do so by a desire to save others from having experiences such as the one that ended his childhood. Despite his desire to never really return.

All parties need a dwarf.

Zen archer to scout and ranged attack.

Bimbur will have to be adjusted to level 1 and would be looking for the monk who trained and raised him that got shivved in an alley.

LG or LN depending on party. Campaign trait Would add +2 to craft weapon

I would go rich parents to actually by a decent bow if allowed, zen archer monks have little money elsewise

Bimbur Longstrike wrote:

I have no particular issues with the Rich Parents trait - it doesn't provide enough money to purchase a magic item, and most APs introduce them as treasure fairly quickly.

Also, for anyone interested in CoCT but not as fond of PF1E, DM DoctorEvil has recently started recruitment for a PF2E version of the same Adventure Path. Check it out here if you're interested!

Bimbur is fixed and he used his wealth to get a mwork composite bow and a one ioun stones to up his skills.

He is pretty good at sneaking and seeing things (+10 perception and +9 stealth), and can point to traps but not do anything with them. So a good scout with darkvision that will be good with a bow at level 3 -- 13 dex will be used and will hurt for two levels until he can use wisdom, but Bimbur is built for the long game.

Hello.

I am most interested in submitting a character for this campaign.

I have started modifying the character sheet from a long dead campaign into my submission for this one, but that will take some time. Since I have until 19/2/2023, unless that has changed, this should not be a problem.

Current submissions are for 3 melee types, a divine caster and a zen archer. There are no submissions for arcane casters and only one other caster and probably my favourite class to play is a Witch. So I will submit... a witch.

The current idea is Boudacia Chieroptrix, a female werebat-kin skinwalker (bloodmarked)(Pathfinder Player Companion: Blood of the Moon) Witch (Advanced Player's Guide 65) Ashiftah (Qadira, Jewel of the East pg. 14).

I have a couple of questions I would like clarified before I get too far.

Mokmurian the Great wrote:

By that I am fine but I will still raise 2 questions. First, I would like to start with the slumber hex, but some GMs won't allow it.

Second, I intend to start with the following feat:-

Bat Shape
Source Blood of the Moon pg. 9
Your powers of transformation have been honed to the point where you can wholly become a bat.

Prerequisites: Cha 13, werebat-kin.

Benefit: You can take the form of a bat whose appearance is static and cannot be changed each time you assume this form. You gain a +10 racial bonus on Disguise checks to appear as a bat. Changing from werebat-kin to bat shape is a standard action. This ability otherwise functions as beast shape II, and your ability scores change accordingly.

If you wear a bat pelt (see page 31), you may choose to adopt a form resembling the bat whose skin you wear instead of your normal bat form.

By the RAW this is fine. But it allows a character to fly at lvl 1 and use hexes while in bat form.

If Mokmurian the Great does not like it then that is fine. If you just don't like it at level 1 then ruling I can take the feat but not till level 5, when PCs can often get flight, is one way of handling it.

Thanks for the question! Unfortunately, after looking at the description of the Slumber hex, I am inclined to disallow it as well as its grand hex relative Eternal Slumber, as it seems far more powerful than the vast majority of hexes, essentially incapacitating any enemy for a coup de grace with one failed save.

However, the rest of your character submission seems fine, including the Bat Shape feat - you would have to change back from your bat shape to use most offensive spells, and the witch's hex ability is primarily support-based. Slight caveat - seeing as how your character will be a bat, I believe I may disallow hexes that require you to be able to speak, with the exception of Feral Speech.
I look forward to seeing the end result of your character creation process.

Ill be fixing this character to fit a CoCT but should be finished soon. Typical Sorcerer character, but Ill add some flavor to it soon.

Dotting. Got an idea for an inquisitor of Calistria who is all about getting revenge for his dead brother. I imagine he'll be a lone agent of retribution, sponsored by the divine. Never quite liked the class name 'inquisitor', as it paints a rather rigid picture ;/

I played a lot of Inquisitors in PF1e, but I don’t think even one of them was very religious or even very Church/temple-hierarchy focused. Given the teamwork feats, monster lore and bane stuff there was plenty to wrap judgments around thematically, and given the vast array of archetypes that did amazing mechanic- and thematic-rejigging of the core concept it is an amazing chassis.

Dotting for interest. Still have a lot of work to do....
Kubi Niss
Snakebite Striker Ratfolk Brawler.
As a worshiper of Korada I prefer to avoid combat. But when it cannot be avoided I want it over quickly.
My sister was an Ashiftah witch and I have her veil. It calls me to avenge her capture and I intend to follow her path to gain some of her magics. However, she had no combat training. I do and it will remain my primary focus.

I've got an idea for a Cleric of Milani that I may submit here in the next couple of days.

Mokmurian CotCT plot spoilers:
Feel free to tell me to shove off if you aren't interested in my advice. I've run the AP all the way through and I've seen it played several times here on the boards. One pitfall in the set up is that it encourages players to create characters who have this strong motivation to hunt down Lamm. Then that is played out in the first short part of the first adventure, and sometimes players are lost for motivation after that. What works best is if characters have strong ties to Korvosa so that they are motivated to protect it later.

Definitely interested, gonna spend some time reading through the player's guide tonight and see if I can't cook up a concept.

On a side note, I did manage to find a Paizo Blog post that acts as some more recent Player's Guide-type material than the actual Player's Guide that was released in 2008. Doesn't go as deep on the lore of Korvosa itself, but it does talk about non-Core classes so that's a plus.

Was starting to figure out equipment, but don't see what we are using for starting gold. ??

Kubi Niss wrote:

Since you'll be starting at first level, I was thinking I'd just use standard starting wealth - for instance, as a brawler, Ms. Niss would get 3d6 * 10 GP. Apologies, I didn't realize I was supposed to include this in the original post!

On the subject, would you accept the average instead of rolling?

Chapel Ty'El wrote:

Sounds good.

I'd like to submit Pendleton, lawful neutral human witch.

He was in a CoCT campaign a few years ago that petered out quickly, as they sometimes do.

I think I just need to bump him up to a 25pt build, and maybe tinker with equipment, but he should be good to go otherwise.

Backstory is in profile, but briefly he was an aspiring legal student before he was framed for murder. Since then he's had the opportunity to focus more on his magical abilities and looking for a new way to advance in life.

Rolewise, he's got good diplomacy for the non-combat side of things, in combat he'd be buffet/debuffer with hexes, plus some backup healing.

Mokmurian the Great- I too am submitting a witch, Boudacia, CG Bloodmarked Skinchanger Witch (Ashtifah) level 1.

The character is not finished. I want to know who I am adventuring with before I finalise skills, spells, equipment and maybe even the campaign trait.

I still have the familiar on the sheet though being an Ashiftah I don't have one. I want the stats for when I use bat shape.

But my familiar for the older character pioneered what is, to my knowledge, a new idea. My familiar, a bat named Wayne, had his parents murdered when the family was robbed by a [bat] criminal. Understandably, this has left him with a burning hatred of criminals and criminality and he plans to become a vigilante when fully adult and ready.

To this end, he intends to harness animals fear of man by dressing up as a human being. And that is why he has become a familiar, to gain enough knowledge of human society and behavior to pull this off.

When he is satisfied with his knowledge, he will return to his city of origin and launch his war on crime. This is a city where most of the population are androgynous, cross dressing pigs who all wear doc martens. It is called Goth Ham city. Thoughts?

Please ignore my last post. This is the alias with the character sheet to be found on,

Thank you for your submission! Your character concept seems quite entertaining.

However, I do have some concerns about her ability to function in a role-playing focused Curse of the Crimson Throne playthrough. Looking at your submission, it seems like you've primarily focused on your familiar and the various puns associated with him, and I'm not sure this more comedic character build would be ideal for Curse of the Crimson Throne, which has much more serious overtones.
Don't get me wrong, your character is quite well-made, and I can see her fitting in with the pregens for the We Be Goblins series, i.e. Grenek the Bunnyslayer or Siathorn and her ferocious poodle - I mean, wolf - Mitzi. However, I struggle to see how the character as written would fare in the serious atmosphere of the assault on Castle Scarwall, for instance.
Sincerest apologies.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm putting Paquin here forward as my application.

She's a regular Tiefling Empiricist Investigator with a very Rogue-like bent despite her bookishness. She'll be taking the standard issue 1 level dip into Inspired Blade Swashbuckler since I'm going with a DEX/INT build.

I have her mostly finished, but still need to take care of some final details.

Nice to see a familiar face in this thread, Paquen! Hope you're doing well.

Scarab Sages

The background trait does work with this background, though there are other things involved, and though the background chosen might not match word for word, I do hope this works for you. This background does add in minor storyline directly involved with Gaedren, or goes into very specific minor things he did, or adds minor things or his minions he did if that is okay. If not I can change it a little.

Kane Hue the Dwarf Gunslinger, went along with the rangers. Although his gun was very accurate, most of the targets and patrol was long range, so he had to use his longbow. When he did fire his gun, however, his group was amazed. Of course, he didn't ever get to join the elite hippo-griff riding rangers, but instead he did enjoy the horseback archery group. His friends were few, but he was very tight in that group. However, Kane Hue wasn't getting paid enough and he also couldn't ride a horse as well as the rest of them, so his wages were lower than the average person in his group. The leader was willing to pay him more if he shared the secrets of blackpowder and gun making. Kane wanted to, but felt the stuff couldn't be mass produced fast enough, or rather the demand would be much higher than the supply, so he figured he needed to wait several years first before he would reveal the secret. Kane simply told his guild the materials were too rare right now and that he would wait until the materials become more common or easier to mass produce before he would share.
About a year later he was recruited by Gaedren Lamm. Kane wasn't ready to quit his job, but Gaedren paid him twice as much. He worked as a body guard for Gaedren for several years. He was also not aloud to be in certain areas of the city when he was employed. His primary job was that he guarded the children when Gaedren was away or asleep to make sure they didn't escape. Gaedren told Kane that these children were runaways from home and that he planned to find the parents of those children. When a child disappeared, Gaedren told Kane that he found the parents and returned the child. Little did Kane know that that was a lie. Where Kane was allowed to travel within the city was so restricted, even he bought his food and clothing within the city was controlled. Kane didn't care that he paid a little bit extra for his food and clothing, cause he made enough to support himself. However, the necessary items became more expensive as time passed by. It was a little bit extra at first, after all what is another two coppers when you are already paying three silver for it. Every month it increased, and of course Kane understood the concept of inflation. However, after three years, the prices of things were more than quadrupled. Not only that but the children were more at ease when Kane was around then when Gaedren was around as time went by. Another thing Kane had noticed. Kane decided to investigate this. One day Gaedren was asleep he simply told the children to stay put and even though not every child trusted him, he told the older ones who did trust him to make sure the younger ones don't try anything. Kane decided to say hello to his old guild and shopped around. One of Kane's guild members told him about his two missing children that went missing for several months. They looked exactly like two of the children Gaedren owned. However, Kane didn't want to believe it at first, he passed it off as a coincidence. He investigated further, he found out that others in town had missing children described very much like the children Gaedren owned. Gaedren told him they were runaways, but the stories didn't add up. All or most of the stories seemed like kidnappings. Also, when Kane went shopping he saw one of Gaedren's bodyguards at the market he wasn't allowed to shop. Apples, oranges and even meat were priced at X. Kane stealthy followed the guys who shopped. Or so he thought. Little did he know that was followed himself. The guys dropped the items off at the private market where a small portion of Gaedren's bodyguards shopped. Oh, Kane realized he was lied to. They paid for the items at price X, but they were resold at X times four or higher. Not to mention the money came back to Gaedren, so whatever he paid people like Kane, it was recycled right back to him. this way All this time, Kane realized he was lied to, Gaedren, is not who he thought he was. Just then he was hit in the back of the head. After he was knocked unconscious, he found himself tied up on a boat. His body was put into a barrel and then thrown into the river. Some fisherman saw the barrel thrown into the river, and thought it was hazardous materials thrown into the river. The fisherman weren't pleased with that action. So the fisherman decided to recover the barrel and then open it. They were surprised when they saw a body in it. Kane was saved just in time, he almost drowned. The fisherman did not want to get more involved, they were afraid of who did it. They told Kane to lay low and stay out of sight. "Whoever did this, thinks you are dead. Stay out of sight for several days and move away if you can." Kane didn't let it go though. He was lied to for several years, scammed, and he almost died. Kane had worked for a criminal and didn't even know it.

Background Trait: Missing Son or Daughter: The missing child is your own son or daughter, a niece or nephew, or the son or daughter of your superior or employer and one you had been charged with protecting. The child was abducted during a trip to the market or some other daily event. Long hours spent searching for rumors and your stubborn will to continue grant you a +1 bonus on Will saves.

Mokmurian, you appear to have got some things confused.

If I can quote from my last post -
"I still have the familiar on the sheet though being an Ashiftah I don't have one."
and then you rejected the character because-
"it seems like you've primarily focused on your familiar and the various puns associated with him".
This is quite true of the second half of my last post, which was included purely because it is supposed to be funny. But that has nothing to do with the character submitted for this campaign. I made a post with a joke and you seem to have mistaken it for a joke character.
It took several hours to get my character to a nearly finished stage. Can I call for a reconsideration as it is not reasonable to reject a character as they are "primarily focused" on a familiar they don't even have. That wasn't even true of the separate character I was playing in a different campaign.
If you want I can send a link to that campaign so you can see that my character there was in no sense a "joke character".

With three weeks left until recruitment closes, I thought I'd list the current applicants.

Evidio Null (player: tumbler) - LN Human Brawler, Missing Sibling
Tawni (player: hustonj) - NG Human Swashbuckler, Reformed Criminal
Ernhild Jaggvir (player: Ythiel) - LN Dwarf Cleric of Abadar, Personal Addiction
Odver Trask (player: Torilgrey) - CG Human Ranger, Missing Son or Daughter
Bimbur Longstrike (player: Chainmail) - LG Dwarf Monk, Personal Addiction
Kubi Niss (player: AGM Lemming) - NG Ratfolk Brawler, Missing Son or Daughter
Pendleton Luculus (player: Rabscuttle) - LN Human Witch, Dropout
Paquen Dalmat (player: rdknight) - CG Tiefling Investigator, Personal Addiction
Kane Hue (player: DoubleGold) - N Dwarf Gunslinger, Missing Son or Daughter
Boudacia Chieroptrix (player: Joynt Jezebel) - CG Skinwalker Witch, Missing Sibling
Mary Anne Kerrelia (player: FreeRadical) - N Half-Elf Sorcerer, Dropout

With the current submissions, I can currently make 462 different five-person parties. However, as mentioned above, there are still three weeks left until recruitment. The following players have dotted for interest but have not submitted a character:

pad300
Solicitor
Chapel36
Ironperenti
SPCR

If I've missed your character, feel free to send me a PM or post in this thread.

Apologies, there appears to have been a miscommunication. I must have missed that section on your character sheet, but either way, I was by no means rejecting your whole character on the basis of your familiar section. As you can see in your character's inclusion in the submission list above, I fully intended and still fully intend to give your character equal consideration with the other submissions (actually, unless I missed a section in the various character sheets, you are currently only in competition with Rabscuttle and AGM Lemming for the arcane caster role). Sincerest apologies for the mistake.

It is OK Mokmurian.
There is so much involved in starting and running a campaign some sort of error is inevitable.
What happened was I am re-using an old alias that was a quite different level 6 witch. That is because it is easier than re-typing everything and I don't have to create a new alias.
As my character [hopefully] for your campaign does not have a familiar the only reason there is anything about my old character's familiar still there is that it includes the stats for a bat. I will use that when I get around to having the stats ready for Boudacia when using the bat shape feat.

Nice to see a familiar face in this thread, Paquen! Hope you're doing well.
Hey there! I didn't recognize you until I saw your Tiny Litsy alias. I'm good, how are you? I saw that Hell's Rebels game is still chugging along. Cool!

With so many aliases per person, it's difficult to recognize people sometimes! :) I'm fine, thanks! The game's still going pretty smoothy. I do miss Paquen's posts though!

Hi Mokmurian, I have a question about this trait:

Dockside Avenger [Link]
Source Varisia, Birthplace of Legends pg. 28
No crime is too despicable for Gaedren Lamm and his thugs—a gang of lowlife murderers, kidnappers, and drug dealers that operate in Korvosa’s Midland district. You’ve lost someone to Lamm and now you’re out for revenge. While Lamm remains alive and free, you are not slain until your hit point total reaches a negative number equal to your Constitution score + 3. Once Lamm is imprisoned or killed, you lose the former benefit but gain 3 permanent hit points.

Is it a available to us as a campaign trait? It's listed among the CotCT campaign traits on AoN, where you pointed us to. On the other hand, it wasn't published in the Player's Guide, but a different source instead.

If it is available, I might switch to it. Personal Addiction is getting a little crowded with selections, and Dockside Avenger fits my background idea better I think.

I myself have no particular issue with you taking this trait, even if it's not officially part of the standard-issue CoCT Player's Guide traits - while I don't have many campaign setting splatbooks myself, Paizo's generous licensing policy allows Pathfinder players to choose from a wide range of sources (a significant reason I abandoned WotC after my early experiences with D&D 3.5E), and I have no problems with players utilizing the resources provided.

Likewise, if any other player wants to use either the Dockside Avenger or Varisian Immunity traits, I have no issues with it, though I would ask that you still have some reason to hate Gaedren Lamm if you choose the latter.

Scarab Sages

Character and statblock is fully fleshed out now in the profile, so you can see both his background and all his character choices.

Sovereign Court

I just can't seem to wrap my head around what I want this character to be. I'm going to withdraw.

Happy gaming everyone!

Hmm.... I don't really fit an arcane caster slot. Really more front-line support? Kind of a melee focused rogue. I'll be working to sneak attack as much as possible. Taking witch for story as well as to get a little better options for sneak attacking.

Apologies, my focus was more on the background rather than analyzing the character builds. I'll fix it in my next listing of players/submissions.

If you want to get "a little better" at sneak attacking, then I believe a 2 level dip into Witch {Ashtifah} is not suitable.

"Ghostwalk (Su): Starting at 2nd level, as a move action after using a hex, an ashiftah can become invisible as per vanishAPG and can then take a 5-foot step. Using ghostwalk doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity."

Combined with, likely, the evil eye hex and hex strike this will not at all make you "a little better" at sneak attack. It is one of the best things ever at setting up sneak attacks and allowing you to escape unscathed. You need to change course now to avoid becoming "vastly better" at sneak attack. :P

Secondly, how do you feel about coming up with backgrounds that cross over? I haven't written mine up yet. We both have "missing child" as a campaign trait, which means we both want to locate Gaedren Lamm, you to find your niece and me to find my younger brother or that was the idea.

Also Fhar was learning magic from an Ashtifah witch which is exactly what my character is, and you will want to learn magic in the same way and so could learn that from me. It could have been Boudacia teaching Fahr magic and Boudacia and Kubi have been trying to find Fhar since.

Gaedren Lamm beat Boudacia into unconsciousness when she was a child and when she catches up to him she is likely to do a number of very painful things to Gaedren Lamm that will be nearly as bad for her CG alignment as they are for him.

You certainly don't have to but it makes rather more sense than the time honoured party of adventurers meeting in a tavern.
