Regarding Reputation with Multiple Factions

I ran into a player recently who seemed to think that, for a given character, you could only ever pick one faction. You would then be stuck with that faction for all purposes, including gaining reputation with said faction.

Meanwhile I was of the mind that you could pick your faction on a game-to-game basis, earning differing amounts of reputation with different factions (so that you might have 3 reputation with Verdant Wheel, but 12 reputation with Envoy's Alliance, for example).

Now I'm calling everything into question and am looking for confirmation on which interpretation is the correct one, or if indeed either of them are correct.

For PFS2, you can pick your faction every mission. You can receive scenario specific bonus reputation for a faction you're not currently championing. So most character will have reputation with multiple factions after they've run a number of missions.
PFS2 Factions & Reputation

For PFS1, you had a single faction, which might be what the player is remembering.

It's almost always 4 for the scenarios I run. How would I know if there is supposed to be bonus reputation?

What does "championing" mean exactly in this context? I've seen GMs write that on the chronicles. Is that simply a fancy way of saying that's the one I've selected for that mission?

As the GM, check the Faction Notes section of the scenario, usually the last subsection of the "Conclusion" section, just after "Secondary Objective"

For instance for scenario 4-02: Return to the Grave:

Faction Notes for 4-02:

FACTION NOTES
This mission is of particular interest to the Horizon Hunters and
Radiant Oath factions.
Horizon Hunters: If the PCs gather at least four parchments or
map fragments from their various encounters, the Horizon Hunters
are able to piece the notes together to create a more comprehensive
map of the hidden paths of the Gravelands. Faction leader Captain
Benarry is pleased with this outcome and can use these maps to
better forge a path into the Gravelands and save more refugees like
those in Steadfast. Each PC earns 2 additional Reputation with
the Horizon Hunters faction, in addition to any other Reputation
earned as a result of completing this scenario.
Radiant Oath: If the PCs bring Sir Cray any intelligence they
gathered from the Watchtower or otherwise convince him to not
attack the knights guarding the structure and return with them to
Caliphas, the Radiant Oath gains a valuable ally in the region and
commends the PCs for their efforts. Each PC earns 2 additional
Reputation with the Radiant Oath faction, in addition to any
other Reputation earned as a result of completing this scenario.

As a player, if you're worried that a GM has forgotten this you can typically check the tags on the scenario on the Paizo Webstore. Usually if a scenario has a name-of-faction tag, there was the chance to earn bonus reputation.

Yes "Championing" is just a fancy way of saying what faction the player selected for their character for this scenario. In Season 1 you had to slot a "Faction Champion" boon as part of selecting your faction, hence the term.

That said, depending on your goals, sticking with one faction is the fastest way to revered. If you spread it around, reaching any threshold in any faction slows down.

That said, I have a character who is aiming for 20 rep in all 6 factions.

Just so she can say "But Everybody likes me. I am just that likeable."

Hopefully doing 5 adventures then switching. Else you'll be 9th level before anyone likes you. ;)
