Rope as a lasso

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

Lets say you want to pull your unconscious friend out of a danger zone. How would you handle this with the rules when using a rope as a lasso?
1 action Grapple against AC of friend (including flat footed and unconscious conditions) and maybe 2 actions to pull the body 25 feet?

I'd say 2-3 actions to convert a normal rope into a lasso ( 1 to draw the rope, and 1-2 to make the lasso. 2x success or 1x critical success ).
2 free hands required

Next, I'd go with 1 action to throw it against the enemy AC ( but hit on normal failure too, as the alchemist healing elixir toss ).
1 free hand required.

Finally, 1 action for each pull ( 15 flat DC? not sure ) pulling the target 5 feet on a success or 10 feet on a critical success.
1 free hand required.

Complex, but dynamic as well. Sounds like it'd be fun to play out.

I agree with this. As far as what checks you're rolling. To lasso, probably a ranged attack with your best proficiency. Pulling is Athletics. For tying the lasso, I think I would default to thievery, but I would be open to suggestions. Survival makes sense, crafting (especially if they have snare crafting), maybe Nature since it deals with training animals and a lasso is a ranching implement.

I would think lassoing a prone person would be extremely difficult as every part of the body you could try to lasso is presumably lying flat on the ground (remember, you are trying to get the lasso around some part of your target's body, which is much easier when they are 'upright'):

You might try to lasso the feet (assuming the target is lying on his/her back with toes pointing up) but given you probably can't get around the target's ankles, I'd imagine the lasso will slip free long before you could actually drag him/her any appreciable distance (assuming the ground isn't a 'low to no-friction' surface of some sort).
Trying to Lasso his/her head sounds like a really bad idea (like 'broken neck' bad).

I think you'd need to enter the danger zone and physically pull your ally out 25' (move, interact, move), or just leave him/her there...

Not sure this is something that is properly adjudicated by the rules, so it's up to GM interpretation, and at the end of the day, what your GM says the rule is, is the rule that's going to be used at the table, regardless of whatever we say here. I probably wouldn't just let somebody automatically lasso an unconscious creature and just spend actions to "pull" them, not unless they're heavily trained in Survival.

That being said, I'm interested in seeing some more uses of Athletics in combat with non-typical effects. A "Lasso Toss" skill feat for Athletics would let somebody try to throw a rope or similar object at a creature, and would be a neat use of tactics.

That's basically a ranged grapple. It could be an Athletics check, but based on Dexterity instead of Strength, and probably with a significantly small range increment.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

About the only ways in game to make this work are"

The Rope Mastery Feat, level 10
"When holding a rope, you can attempt an Athletics check to Disarm, Grapple, or Trip a creature up to 10 feet away instead of only adjacent creatures."

Animate Rope
Spell 1
Tie "The rope ties itself around a willing creature or an object that's unattended or attended by a willing creature."

Combat Grapnel, net or Aklys can also work as can a Harpoon Bolt if you don't mind a little damage. There is also an actual lasso in the game, a specific magic item called Lawbringer's Lasso which "is a net that can be used to Grapple creatures up to 30 feet away" so it looks like any attempt to lasso acts like a net.
