Is Purify Food and Drink Context Sensitive for Allergies / Racial Poison.

Rules Questions

For one individual, all nuts, or all fish, or another miscellaneous food might be considered poison if they have a severe allergy. Alternatively, if a rougarou has similar dietary implications to canines, onions might be poisonous to them.

If a divine caster with such a weakness were to cast Purify Food and Drink, would the food be made safe for them to eat? Could a divine caster of another race make the food safe for such an individual at their table? Or does Purify Food and Drink only work on a "Common Context," where food could remain poisonous to other unfortunate individuals?

Well, generally speaking I'm unaware of any specific rules of things that are only poisonous for certain PC races, and to my knowledge there aren't rules for allergies.

So the simple answer, from my perspective, is it only removes poisons for the common races. Not things that would be considered allergies or poisons to only some specific uncommon race.

Like Shoonies are dog people, but they have no rules about not being able to eat onions or grapes or other things. So they can. And Purify Food and Drink wont remove those items. But even if it were poisonous to only Shoony, I still don't think it would remove those items.

Liberty's Edge

My druid is immune to all poisons. If he cast Purify Food and Drink it remove poison or not?

I think the spell will remove anything that is poisonous for the race of the caster for sure.
To limit the variance of the spell, I would rule that it removes anything that is poisonous to the races of all people that will eat that food.
The spell makes food and drinks "suitable for eating and drinking". No race limitation.

Some spices, all Solanaceae, sugar, alcohol, etc. are "poisonous" to some extent. Purify Food and Drink will not remove them unless they reach a dangerous concentration.

Allergies are another matter. It is not a problem of the food, it is a problem of the person. As I see it, Purify Food and Drink will do nothing for that.
To make a different example Purify Food and Drink will not make the food kosher, even if not kosher food isn't suitable for eating and drinking to fervent followers of the Jewish religion.
(I see no problem in creating a different version of the spell that makes the food kosher, or edible for a person with a specific allergy.)

Just because something is harmful does not mean it is poisoned. Almost anything in sufficient quantity can be harmful. If you consume enough sugar, you can end up becoming diabetic. So, does the spell remove all sugar from food? The spell simply removes contaminations from the food. The target of the spell is listed as contaminated food or water. An unspoiled peanut is not contaminated food or water no matter how allergic you are too it.

even water can be a lethal poison, if you drink too much too fast. (living in a very hot climate, it occasionally happens around here. people get way too hot, drink a lot and way too much then they should to cool off. it's rare but very deadly when it happens.)

i agree with Diego's idea of "Purify Food and Drink will not remove them unless they reach a dangerous concentration."

if some race has a negative reaction to common food or drinks (say a race based on the witch from 'wizard of Oz' and water) if a member of that race cast the spell then the water would also be purified and gone. but if anyone else cast it the water would stay and it's up to them to find out what they are drinking\eating. more so for allergic reactions which is based more on the person's body reaction then the substance.
