Double gather energy

Kineticist Class

One comment here grabbed my interest.

Basically all impulses and blasts are really one handed weapons.

And that got me thinking:
What if we could gather in both hands? (each using a separate action to gather)

It could be that if you've gathered in both hands you get your Con as damage on blasts, which could alleviate some damage complains.

You could form two handed weapons by using both energies. Which would alleviate some theme complains(mostly from earth).

You could use two overflow abilities before you had to start gathering once more. Which would alleviate some action economy complains.

It would also be a bit more tactical for when you start blowing them off in overflow compared to keeping both for the passive boosts. Unlike now that they are more like an on/off switch.

Opinions?

Sounds cool. Idk about the balance one way or the other. Would definitely help the awkward action economy

I could see a double gather as a 12th + feat. We have gather amalgam which is similar but something to gather 2 of the same element would be in the realm of possibility I think.

I would rather the class just be balanced as a two hand class to begin with, almost every class we have is balanced around the damage of one handed weapons and given that kineticst has utility from impulses, i would be more than happy to just give up use of a free hand for beefier damage

That'll destroy the shield and high-five meta!

fistbump meta would still be alive and well and is clearly supirior

I think it would be a good idea. Another thing that's felt awkward with dual or universal gate is how difficult it is to switch between elements to use certain abilities like air cushion or starting kinetic auras.

I don't love "you have to keep track of each hand separately" but there is currently an ambiguity as to whether you can use Stone Shield with an Elemental Weapon active.

So, I love the idea of being able to gather elements in both hands. Nearly every elemental character in media does it, whether it’s one element or more. I think a damage buff with the same element gathered in both hands could be great.

This additional damage could be Con based. With the same element gathered in both, you add Con to damage. If you have two separate elements gathered, it’s half Con. If you only have one hand with a gathered element you do not add Con.

This boosts damage for all though it has some restrictions. I really like the concept of the dual and universal gates being the “dual wielder” (specifically the dual gates) and leaving the dedicated gate as the “two handed” option.

With the other gates being able to gather separate elements in each hand opening up more flexibility, I think the dedicated gate should be able to gather element in both hands with one action and increase it’s blast die size (d6-d8 for fire, etc.) in addition to the Con damage.

This lets dedicated gates be the best with their element, as I think they should be, and boosts their damage to the point where it may help with overcoming resistances. Poor fire is gonna have a hard time if it can’t get a versatile damage.
