Supernatural or Spell-Like abilities that emulate Spells, do they still function like the spell?

Rules Questions

If a Succubus use a Supernatural or Spell-like ability that emulates "Daze", does it exceed the limitations of the spell? ie can it effect more than 4 HD creatures?

I was of the opinion that that they still function like the spell and thus in the example above, the succubus would fail if she used it on any creature with 5 or more HD.

Liberty's Edge

If it says "works like", the effect of the SP or SU ability is exactly that of the spell.
There are SP and SU abilities that have differences, but those are clearly described in the ability.

From what I see a Succubus normally hasn't a SU or SP ability that emulates Daze, so it all depends on how she gets it and what the ability says.

Things like that work as what they reference, except for when a) explicitly stated or b) defined by a general rule. The Slumber hex for example says "a creature within 30 feet" and "This hex can affect a creature of any HD.", overwriting the area section of the Sleep spell with a target, as well as the range, and the HD limit given in the description. And per general rules, supernatural abilities don't provoke or require components.
