I'm New to Pathfinder and Have a Few Questions I'd Like Clarified

Hello!

I'm new to Pathfinder (and by extension Pathfinder Society). I've spent the last couple days reviewing as many documents as I can trying my best to make a PFS character so that I can join play.
With that said, I have a few questions I'd appreciate clarification on:

First, to my understanding, a PFS character is largely the same as a standard character, but with some options having limited access, typically based off of rarity or legality. I'm fairly sure I get that. However, I'm unsure how schools and factions work: are they just choices I make for my character or do I need GM approval?

Where do I mark certain feats, features etc?
So, I'm migrating from 5e to PF2. In 5e, feats are just denoted and don't typically have select areas. PF2, on the other hand, lists its different categories to the side.

  • What is a "Special" feat, and where does it come from?
  • If I get skills and feats from PF schools where do those go?
  • Should I note my free regional language separately or just add it to the sheet?

How do PbP/PbD games work?
Since my closest game store is... 2 hours away, I can't rely on being able to meet in person; however, I am still interested in playing and heard PbP and PbD is an option. I also prefer to purchase hard copies of the materials I use, as I find them more reliable and easier to use.

  • Do I need digital copies of books and character documents to play PbP/PbD?
  • Where can I get my first Chronicle?
  • Where can I find a beginner PbP/PbD for a 1 hr or 4-5 hr session?

Sorry for the long questions, especially if they've been asked before and I just don't get it. Hopefully you all can help me though. In any case, thanks for reading thus far.

Welcome. I'll try to answer some of your question, but there's a chance I'm misunderstand some of them, so please ask whatever follow-ups you need.

1. Re: schools and factions, you can choose to ignore them for now while getting started. The Player basics sections of the guide uses appropriate defaults for all of them; if you want to use them as specified under the Additional Character options page you can. No GM approval required for those.

2. I'm not sure I understand what you're asking with "Where do I mark certain feats, features, etc?" There's no required format character sheet, people use a variety of what works best for them. If you're asking about the version of the character sheet in the back of the CRB, do you have a particular feat in mind that you're not sure how to list?

3. "Special" feat, normally this refers to a feat that is able to be taken mutliple times and shows the rules for what that means. However I do notice in the CRB character sheet they have a 'Special 1st' under Ancestry feats, so I suspect you're asking about that instead. I think that's intended to accommodate some ancestry choices that might give an extra feat; also might be where I'd put a choice taken from Human's Natural SKill/Natural Ambition -- ie choices that generate an extra choice. There's tons of different ways of annotating it, and really whatever works for you, that you'd be able to explain if asked about it, works.

4. For bonuses feats from PFS School, I'd use the Bonus Feats section of the CRB character sheet.

5. for the free regional language, I'd add it to the list, and annotate as (free regional language) just for my own memory.

6. You don't need digital copies of references: refer to Character Options under Resource Ownership for the rules for what requires ownership and what counts as proof of ownership.

7. You'll get your first chronicle after completing your first game.

8. I'm not too familiar with all the PbP/PbD options, I know there's some PbP games hosted here, but I'd probably recommend joining the Organized Play Online discord (pfschat.com for an invite). They can probably help you find a game that's organized there, and/or direct you to some of the other discords that are particularly focused on PbP/PbD.

Welcome!

Happy to help. That's a lot of questions, so I'll answer a few, and I'm sure others will answer others.

I'm not familiar with how 5E works, but for Pathfinder (and thus, for Society) your Character Sheet can be of your own creation. I use personally-designed spreadsheets, because in the end, I'm the one using them, and familiarity will speed up my ability to reference them. If you have a sheet of your own design, and you're playing online, just link it somewhere in case your GM has any questions.

I am not sure what a "Special" feat is, either. Do you have an example?

Every Society character champions an "ideal", represented by the Factions. You can champion a different Faction every game, if you wish. The default Faction, if you don't want to choose one, is Horizon Hunters. Their ideal is traveling the world and exploring unknown places, which is sort of the default Pathfinder Society motto.

Once you pick one, just make sure your character profile has that Faction check-boxed, so that when your games get reported, the GM can report which Faction you championed for that game.

Chronicles are earned after each Adventure you play.

Ownership of sources is rarely audited these days. Society play is largely honor system-based. But it wouldn't hurt to save your receipts, or a screenshot of your purchases (for PDFs), just in case someone does ask.

Hope those answers help. Feel free to reply if something doesn't make sense ^_^

Thank you for the swift response!

That pretty much clears up my questions. I was referring to the CRB sheet, so you were right that I was asking about the Ancestry "special", and you did a great job clearing that up.

Thank you for the clarification on factions. I brought up 5e because it's a simpler game, so there's less going on with your standard CRB sheet. I've looked into a few custom sheets but will probably stick with CRB for now.

Also, thanks for the heads up on the receipts ^_^

  • Welcome to our Paizo Organized Play community, AnVee.

For PFS2 PbP on these forums, join us in the Cottonseed Lodge. Introduce yourself as a new player and we'll help you get started. One of our PbP conventions is wrapping up so some games may become available soon. There will also be PbP/PbD games available for PaizoCon starting at the end of May. Most of those will be short adventures due to the restricted timeframe for play.

PbP is usually conducted over several weeks (or longer for larger adventures) with daily posts happening. A GM should set the expectation of posting rates for each game, though many default to once a day for players.

I am happy to provide you with more information for PbD (Play by Discord) lodges if you'd like.

If you are looking for games that are played in "real-time", as your 1 hr or 4-5 hr session question implies, then you may be looking for VTT (Virtual Table Top) games. We have many lodges that offer these. The main Org Play Online discord server at pfschat.com is a good place to start. Once you have joined, head to #general_chat_pfs2 and introduce yourself there as a potential new player. The friendly mob should welcome you and lead you in the right direction. The two most commonly used VTTs are Roll20 and Foundry, with Foundry rapidly becoming the favourite for PFS2. Other VTTs are also offered though, so keep an eye on that when signing up for games. The welcome channel right above the general chat channel also has links for other VTT lodges.

Feel free to PM me with more questions or for any assistance.

A green-haired gnome wanders into the discussion. "Welcome, new Pathfinder! " She waves at AnVee. "Maybe someday we can adventure together."

The Cottonseed Lodge is awesome! This character's name is Pip, and she's played in a number of games that were arranged through there.

I have a character sheet that you can see if you click my avatar. It's only one of the ways that you can design your character sheet on here, but hopefully it can give you ideas on how you want to organize the information yourself.

Thank you very much the extra info. I wasn't aware of VTT, and it certainly sounds alluring (although I might not always have the time for that). Also, thanks for the heads up about Cottonseed Lodge! Sorry for my delayed response, I've had an interesting past few days (which is alright now ^-^') but I've spent the last few hours researching what you've taught me.

A disembodied voice calls out from the air, "Hello to you too, Pip!"

Thank you for the character sheet example for PbP! I've been doing some research into the Cottonseed Lodge as well as the Flaxseed Lodge (which I currently understand to be the parent organization that the Cottonseed Lodge is a part of(?))

I'm currently working on putting on a character together, so once I've finished, I'll probably see about joining the Cottonseed Lodge :)
