What animal companions do you think PF2 is missing?

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

We've got a lot of animal companions already, but more is always nice. Personally I'm missing a frog companion.

Does it need to be an animal?

How about an animated still pot or brew vat for all the dwarven brewers out there?

Pangolin
Red panda
Thylacine

If a living chair counts as an animal companion, I think those could too.

Elephant, Mammoth, T-Rex and a lot of dinosaurs.
Elephants are actual mounts in our world and I find it really sad you can't have one in the game. Dinosaurs are limited to small raptors and pterosaurs. There are tons of nice dinosaurs out there that would be pretty cool to have.

Also, Pangolin is in the game. But it doesn't spread diseases...

Mechanically speaking, I say there's a lot to play with ( a wide pool of AC as well as different abilities ).

Same with AC that can be used as basic template.
For example:

Bird/Bat = Anything that flies
Horse = Anything common meant to have the mount trait ( it could be a bear, a horse, a dwarf or anything common the player would like to ride ).
Cat = Anything cat related ( It can be a cat, a lion, a panther, etc... ).

and so on.

I don't feel the need for stuff like "Cat" and "lion" or "panther".
It' would be kinda useless since cat covers everything .

What I'd like to have is:

1) an arachnid, which is currently missing

2) a template meant for animals with long neck ( it can be either a giraffe or a brontosaurus. It would be exactly the same ).

I haven't read any of it yet because I might be playing it soon, but I'm hoping Quest for the Frozen Flame fills in a few of these blanks.

Also putting my two cents in for a Huntsman Spider animal companion.

According to a post on Reddit from someone who has the book, both Elephant and T-Rex are in Quest for the Frozen Flame Book 3 (you're encouraged to use elephant for mammoths)!

We have capybara, so I am fine.

He also said there's Rhino and Triceratops there, and the latter of which is, like, my biggest need.

Now I just want Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurs, Sauropod, and...well as many dinos as you can fit.

Plus apparently, the Trike's companion ability is to attack and knock prone in the same action, and then the bonus effect is that it does more damage to prone targets.

Which, you know, might make Trikes end up as a top tier pick, considering how powerful prone is.

But that's him telling me, telling you, and he said he didn't have the book on him and was going off memory, so who knows?

One AC I'm sorely missing is a spider.

I would like a cat that starts medium and thus ends large with savage to be more like a real tiger. Since even small tigers are near 8ft. long.

Rodents of Unusual Size? I don't think they exist.

I'd definitely like to see Elephant. Some more bird and cat options. Yes you can just use the generic one, but an explicit Owl, or Snow Leopard could add some flavour just like Vulture really did. I feel there is mechanical space in the alert/perception and stealth areas.

I'd prefer if they fixed up the level 14+ AC problem for strength based animals (Indomitable really helped the mid levels - thanks), and provided a couple of animal companion specific items.

A friend with the book says Frozen Flame 3 adds Elephant, Rhinoceros, Triceratops, and Tyrannosaurus.

I'd always be happy with more dinos. Rhino was my main hope, and that's in an upcoming book so I'm happy about that.

Some other picks might be a few more verminous animal companions like a spider, centipede, and leech, as well as a few other fun big animals like hippos.

Scarab Sages

A ROUS is always fun, although personally I'd like to see some planar mounts. Much like how a flying mount made those PFS scenarios in the plane of air much more fun, burrowing, swimming, and fire walking/surfing mounts would be cool.

Kangaroo, Giant Crab, Giant Spiders, Owlbear, Bull/Bison/Buffalo, and Goblin Dog are all currently not published to name a few Animals that are otherwise given stats as a creature/monster.

I desperately need rules for monstrous animal companions. Similar to the Monstrous Mount feats from 1E.

Please give me my Griffons, Pegasi, Unicorns, Manticores and Hippogryphs!!

I feel bad for not considering crabs when I made my post. I love crabs!

Also I'd really like to see cave worms become animal companions. I mean they're animals now.

Also some of the funkier plant forms from 1E, like the hunter and sniper cactuses.

Bull/Bison/Buffalo/Ox.

I want a giant spider so I can recreate my Drow Cavalier from 1st edition. Also, I want goats.

I'm hoping for any MOUNT that doesn't advance to Large when it becomes Mature or advanced. 10' square mounts are quite a pain when the modules are designed for 5' square creatures.

Also, a flying MOUNT. For game balance purposes not available until later levels ...

I'd like to see some more powerful animal companions in general, but perhaps gated behind already having a few animal companion feats. Say you can't select the animal companion until you have the Mature and Incredible Companion feats or equivalent.

Giant wasp (come on, we can turn into a wasp but not have one for our Calistrians? Really Paizo?)
Giant cricket/grasshopper/cicada (a song-based support ability would be quite original)
Giant frog/toad (a classic, i played a character with 1 on my PF1 game and it was amazing)
Sauropod (maybe could be a reskinned elephant, but i would prefer something unique)
Giant spider (do i need to explain)
Deer/antelope ( a fast support companion that is not a mount)
Griffinfly (for that prehistoric feel)
Chalicothere (because they deserve to be more widely known)

Sorry, now I just cannot help but think of Reindeer, which would of course need to have the Mount property so that when it gets a magical flying ability, and potentially a magical innate Light cantrip (with reddish coloration perhaps)

Then we need a magical sleigh that can allow an AC to lift another so much in bulk over any (or just flying) movement that the AC possesses.

Giant mosquito.

Giant centipede.

Giant mantis.

Giant leech.

War ferret.

Half the fun is playing alongside something a lot bigger than it has any right to be.

I'd also like options for swarm companions.

We can never have enought arthropods. Spiders, centipedes and crabs are probably the most obvious one that are missing, but I have to add giant mantis (especially because they are explicitely in lore used quite often as animal companion of red mantis assassins), squids and jellyfish for aquatic companion, as well as wasp (along with the rest of giant hymnopteres, like bees and ants).

Other than the "mundane" (altho giant) animal companion, it would be nice if we could have some ooze and swarm companions (that would probably be either rare or restricted to some class feat/path).

Everything that's an option for beast barbarians should also be an option for animal companions.

We are missing a few animals from the Animal Form spell, that's true. Mostly bull and frog, I think?

Also, while not a new animal per say, and I may have said this upthread, but I'd like an option for your animal to be a pack of things rather than a singular thing. A specialization, so it'd be high level, which makes your companion take up more space, but comes with a couple benefits like getting an advanced maneuver to attack everything in its reach in exchange for being much easier to surround and pound on by the enemy.

On that subject, what's the benefit to having a huge animal companion, as in the Mammoth Lord archetype? Is it just that you can now ride your animal if you are large, and it can potentially use athletics on bigger creatures? Being huge doesn't naturally increase reach anymore.

Duck

A few more drake varieties could be neat. We have the Riding Drake, yes, but what about a smaller and more nimble drake for those who want a draconic buddy but not a mount?

Sadly a Riding Drake is not a Duck

I don't really need any new companions. I just want a slight retuning so nimble companions don't outclass strength based ones so hard

Just giving Savage companions an increased prof with barding would go a long way to helping that IMO. Also making a couple specializations that grant as many ridiculous benefits to strength companions as Daredevil does for dexterity ones.

I agree. As it stands the small increase in damage doesn't justify the supposedly brick house animal companions being markedly easier to kill. That's a shame bc though my hunter character concept is better served with a raptor companion my Conan the barbarian concept is better served with a trex. Justifying that choice mechanically when the trex will go down like it's made of paper compared to the raptor is a really tough sell
