D&D5e Barrowmaze

Recruitment

Local villagers whisper of a mysterious place deep in the marsh - a place shrouded in mist and dotted with barrow mounds, ruined columns, and standing stones. The tomb-robbers who explore beneath the mounds - or rather the few who return - tell tales of labyrinthine passages, magnificent grave goods, and terrifying creatures waiting in the dark. Are you brave (or foolish) enough to enter the Barrowmaze?

So, Barrowmaze is a mega-dungeon-crawl through a labyrinth of haunted catacombs.

I've run D&D5e before, but never a super dungeon, and I wanted to give it a go, and Barrowmaze comes pretty highly recommended.

There are surface towns, populated by NPCs, but this is primarily going to be a kick down the door, kill the monster, take their stuff kinda' game. Combat will be exclusively theatre of the mind and you will be expected to do your own mapping of the dungeon complex (immersive gameplay, or lazy GM? You decide!), or become hopelessly lost and die. :p

I'm looking for up to 6x players, to generate 1st level characters and join me on this epic jouney. Recruitment is first come, first served, I shan't be sifting through dozens of applications. If there is additinal interest after all six spots are taken, I'll hold your details in reserve, in case anyone drops out at a later date.

One thing to note, because Barrowmaze is pretty undead-centric, monsters gain +2 to resist Turn Undead and that modifier increases every time Turn Undead is used that day, so Clerics will need to think tactically about when they are going to use that ability.

Full Disclosure: I am already running a SW/Council of Thieves game on these very forums, so my attention will be divided between the two games. I still expect to post at least once per day, most likely more often than that if I am able to do so.

Interested. Throwing my hat into the ring for a paladin. Race and Oath TBD.

What are the character creation rules? Standard Array? 4d6 drop lowest? Races/sources allowed?

Any house rules to be aware of?

*bell tolling*

Funeral March sounds in the background

A hooded figure enters the room. It removes its hood and gazes at the sky, eyes turned white, as a thunder cracks and deafens the audience.

Yes, it's the famous Twilight cleric, Mark Callaway.

He's not built yet, but I'll start right now - as soon as we're given some creation rules. Or should we just use standard? 27 points, etc

I shall chime in to build a bard! Decent chance it's a half-elf, but let me think on that.

I am happy for you to use the 27 point buy system suggested above, link here if you are unfamiliar with this method of character gen. I've never used this method myself, but it seems to result in a pretty well-rounded array of results.

No house rules I can think of off the top of my head, with the exception of the restrictions on Turn Undead posted above. If anything comes up during play, we'll address it as/when in the Discussion thread.

What sources beyond the PHB are we allowed to use? Tasha's, Xanathar's, Volo's etc?

Oops, thought I had addressed that point, but must have edited it out.

I'm gonna' say stick to the PHB, plus any one other WotC supplement, ie: Xanathar, Tasha, etc....

I own most of the D&D5e books for reference, but I don't have the Sword Coast Guide, so I would say avoid that one as a favour to me. :D

EDIT: Unless you really want to use something from there, in which case, go for it.

I present you Mark Calaway, still WIP but with some backstory there. He starts his game life as a sorcerer, but just for first level - he'll change to Cleric and stay there.

Got it. I think I'll end up with an Aasimar Oath of Vengeance Paladin.

Next question: Which version of the Aasimar would you prefer I use, as there have been 3. First from the DMG, Second from Volo's, and a third from Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse. Given my druthers, I would prefer to go with a Scourge Aasimar from Volo's.

Pathfinder Adventure Subscriber

I'll put together a rogue of some sort tonight and get him up.

Brene female half-orc rogue. If chosen...

That's fine.

Yeah, I'm not doing the whole "audition/compete for a part in my game" thing. I'm looking for six players, the first six players who express interest are in. You are #4, so you're in! Congratz! :D

Liberty's Edge

I'll jump in as well...sounds like lots of fun!

I can do a drow wizard

I would be interested in playing a Barbarian. I can get it together tomorrow if there is still room.

Liberty's Edge

OK I have made a two-handed weapon fighter. He is on DnD Beyond, but for some reason the link does not seem to work...will try to sort this out so you can check him for the game...thanks

Alright, here's the basic outline for a half-elf lore bard archaeologist. Roughly Lara Croft but with spells.

ddb.ac/characters/69027303/8X8wRT

I couldn't bring myself to dump Int for a lore bard, even though I get the sense that Barrowmaze is going to be a meat grinder.

... and that's 7 (yeah, I added another slot for my good buddy Sobok). The game is now full and ready to start. Thankyou everyone for your interest and participation! Apologies to anyone else who missed the recruitment window, but feel free to post below and I'll contact you for first dibs on any spaces that open up in the future, due to player attrition, or whatever. :)

Talomyr - Scourge Aasimar from Volo's
Jereru - Marcus Calawzy, Twikight Cleric
Tazo - Tazo, Half-Elf Bard
Scranford - Brene, Half-Orc Rogue
Daniel Stewart - Two Handed Fighter
Terevalis - Drow Wizard
Sobok - Barbarian

I've already made a post in the Discussion thread with some setting info and lore. Feel free to weave some of that into your character stories to create a stronger connection to the Duchy of Aerik, where this adventure will be taking place (or not). I can answer any questions you may have there also. I will make a post in the Gameplay thread to get things going later today, and then you can all jump in when you are ready. There will be a bit of exposition in the town, then it's off to the superdungeon!!

(Note: there is more than one entrance to Barrowmaze, but they are not clearly signposted, and it may be several in-game days of mucking around in swampy tombs before you even find the 'main' entrance, so don't be disheartened if this is the case).

I'M GONNA' TURN YOU INTO PASTE!!! >:D

But seriously, there is a lot of Save or Die stuff, just in the first 'area', and I was like "Woah, really?!", but with D&D5e, that means Save or More Death Saves (at least, that's how I'm gonna' interpret it), so it'll probably be marginally less gruelling than running the game in another system.

But yeah, tread lightly, I guess. ;)

Is this a generic D and D world or set like in Greyhawk?

My understanding is it is a generic D&D world. It is setting agnostic and the adventure does not venture beyond the Duchy of Aerik. I've put some info, re: local landmarks and common deities in the Discussion thread. If your character is from further afield, you may as well say that he/she "hails from a distant land" and leave it at that.

Liberty's Edge

Awesome...will get avatar up asap

thanks

Here is Kurt!! Just placed a URL to his DnD Beyond character sheet! Hope that is ok

Woah, sorry I missed this. Posting for player attrition. :)

Noted. Thankyou for your interest, sorry you missed the initial call. I will PM you direct if any spaces open up in the future. :)
