Interest Check: 3d mapping tech -- maybe Rise of the Runelords or Curse of the Crimson Throne w / Astral and Tabletop Simulator 3d maps

Recruitment

I just got tabletop simulator to play around with a map program:

3d map example. Holy Cow is there some amazing stuff you can do with this program. There's 3d map of the City State of Tyr from Dark Sun -- just amazing. It's basically a computer game. The 3d monsters move!

The only catch is everyone needs to own tabletop simulator (20 bucks) to do this, so it'd require some serious interest. I get that most of the time in recruitments, you can make one serious 'ask' in terms of something outside the ordinary -- so my 'ask' for this would be a player group that has, or would be willing to get tabletop simulator, and have computers that can run stuff like this. I'd also use Astral tabletop as a supplement.

I'd be willing to run a fan favorite like Runelords or Crimson Throne if everyone was on board with the tech element, which is the main thing I'm interested in.

I'd rather do homebrew, but I thought the popular APs might make this idea more palatable.

Dark Archive

I do not have the simulator, but I would be open to getting it if you did Rise of the Runelords. I am in the middle of Crimson Throne already.

Would this work for pbp?

I can only do it if it's pbp, so that's the only way it's happening (don't have time to prep real time sessions).

It's not set up with the assumption of asynchronous play, but it can probably be worked around -- I am on eastern standard time, so it may be challenging for players on the other side of the world. What we'll probably have to do is pre-arrange a time when we all log on to the maps to check placement for set piece battles. There may be other solutions -- I'm talking to more experienced parties in the discord chat for TTS to get ideas.

I should also clarify -- I'm going to use pre-made assets for 99% of this, so maps/areas that aren't already available (some are, like foxglove mannor, I already looked around), I'm going to pick something that's a near equivalent, so it's not going to be 100% as on the page if we're using a module.

Relevant Thread

I'm still investigating -- it's not the assumed form of play, but it looks like there are work arounds.

Another Thread

It definitely looks like it can be done -- it's going to require effort on the player's part above what a normal VTT experience might. I think it will require them to open and manipulate and save the map themselves.

Map Example

For instance, I might use this snowy castle as either Hook Mountain or the Stone Giant fortress.

Grand Lodge

I have the TTS but this sounds like a real time game...

It can't be a real time game, I don't have time for that either.

I own the simulator already and would definitely be interested. I just finished an epic run of Crimson Throne on the boards (all six books!) and love the whole AP runs.
