Roll20 AP Questions

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

Hello!

After the holidays, I think of I'm going to dive in and start a Roll20 game for Strength of Thousands. What I'm curious about for running a Pathfinder 2E game is do I need to buy all the main rulebooks (from Core Rulebook to Guns & Gears) from the Roll20 marketplace? I wasn't sure if I buy book 1 of the AP that some links or details will be missing such as monsters from any of the bestiary's or spells from character books.

Another question I'd like to tack on to this...
If an AP describes an encounter but doesn't have a map in the book, does the Roll20 version of the AP have a map set up for it or do you have to create that encounter for yourself?

To answer both the questions:-

What do I need to buy?: The only content you'll have access to on roll20 are the books you explicitly buy. If you want to be able to drag-and-drop stuff to your character sheet, you need to buy it. You can type most of it in by hand, or just roll dice and do everything manually so it isn't fatal to not have it. Also, just because it is in a book you've purchased on roll20 doesn't mean they'll have included it, or that it will work properly.

Will stuff without maps have maps?: No. You'll need to create those by hand.

I don't think that quite answered the whole question and I don't know the answer myself. If I bought the AP on Roll20, do I get the monsters from the bestiaries that are used in it?

Just throwing the usual plug out there: I recently switched to Foundry and you get access to all the SRD stuff without buying it again. There's an importer that can bring in APs and most modules from pdfs that you own.

Good clarification, thejeff! When you buy an AP, you get all of the stats for all of the monsters that appear on the maps. You don't need to buy an additional Bestiary.

(I've been switching to Foundry, too. Different, but as many, things bother me, so I'm not sure if the change will stick.)

Thank you, EvilAardvark!

That had been my assumption, which is why I hadn't bought it yet.

The creatures will be in the local bestiary (almost all the time) and maps are easy to buy/upload, so it isn't a massive deal. But it is a bit annoying.

Thank you all for the helpful responses!

I've been using Maptool and Combat Manager for the last 5 APs I've ran and it's been pretty easy. The most time-consuming portion seems to be finding maps for the encounters that don't have maps in the books.

(And setting up the vision-blocking.... but I enjoy doing that and it helps because I become more aware of how some of the trickier places work.)

PM sent for specifics bud
