I think this is a very big and broad question, with numerous answers. When reflavoring (anything), I feel like it helps to think in terms of categories. Like...
Theme: Like you mentioned with a "warrior of the sea," having thematic equipment. Your spear was an old harpoon. A nomadic warrior has collapsible for ease of travel. The fur-lined armor of people in colder climes.
History: Your equipment speaks to your history. You use a walking staff that has the height chart of your family members. Your belt was woven when you first left home from the local forest. You still wear your mother's sun-shaped shield strapped at your hip, even as a wizard.
Organization: You wear the gear of your organization, even if you're no longer a member. An ex-signifier who keeps the cowl, but not the mask of their armor. An Iomeadean with their sword shaped like their goddess's. Or even a hardened mercenary who dares to paint their armor red and foolishly call themselves a Red Mantis.

You should also think about when, why, how, and who made the equipment. That can tell you a lot about it. A knife maker will make things differently from a blacksmith, which will be different from a steel worker.
Also think about the context of who the weapon was originally made for. A sword made for a noble will look much grander than one made for a soldier. While a ceremonial sword will not be as effective (an excuse to make a simple weapon look like a martial or advanced one).

Examples I've seen in play:
A witch that casts spells by aggressively squeezing her frog familiar.
A dragon instinct barbarian whose power comes from the fact that she used to be the god of dragons.
The claws from the Slag May feat being short iron spikes coming out of their knuckles, essentially built in brass knuckles.

For my Inventor I took advantage of the fact that the weapon innovation is stated as using the same statistics as a normal weapon but not technically being one to do some heavy reflavoring. My "longbow" is a railgun, using electromagnetism to shoot nails and metal spikes at high speeds.
For a less crazy one, my goblin Swashbuckler has a rapier reflavored as a Mail Breaker from Dark Souls (essentially a big stiletto dagger).

The Secrets of Magic streaming play that Jason did with 4 amazing people (really, check it out if you haven't) has inspired a possible reskin for me.
BattleGOAT! Now that Poppets are available, I am giving thought to a quadruped battlegoat poppet fighter, and I was trying to envision how to do the ramming horns... and then the idea of reskinning shields as helms! One with shield boss (for the rounded horns) and one shield spiked (for pointy horns) that the poppet can swap back and forth!
As I am keeping it in mind for PFS, I'm trying to keep the stretching to a minimum, but this is SO tempting to run.
