Armor for Drones / Companions

My brain has been thinking over an old question one of my players asked me a while ago and I thought it was best to just ask here.

Can you get armour for a Drone?

which leads to the other half, Can you get armour for a companion animal?

As general when it first came up, I said no since they have their natural armour. Only had the CRB at the time. As time went on, you get exposed to more things and now my brain is unsure, still playing as a no, but thought it was worth an ask.

My party has joked that when the Ysoki Mechanic dies, we are just going to convert his drone to an SRO character, since we like him better (Obviously said in good nature).
If you can armor an SRO, which doesn't adhere to a humanoid form (Including all the aliens out there) then it in theory shouldn't be too hard to armour a drone if it took armour proficiency as a feat

Drones and Companions can only use gear that's either specifically designed for them (like the environmental protection collar for companions) or their abilities specifically allow (like a rifle if they have two weapon mounts). They gain armor class based on their level, which would be far too high if you got to stack purchased armor on. If you want extra armor for a drone, there's a mod for that.

If the ysoki's drone becomes an SRO, it would then gain the ability to wear armor, yes, but it would lose its natural AC and mod slots. Starfinder treats NPCs and PCs differently; whether it makes sense logically or not, it's how the game chooses to address the issue.

As I said, I class it as a no, I was just curious. Also, if they did have access to armour, wouldn't it be the highest applies rather then stack? Like having light armour in Power armour

As you initially noted, the main issue is proficiency. Then, the next point is that armor bonuses don't stack at all in Starfinder. There are already races of unusual proportions out there that require armor to be specifically modified for them such that if you wanted to have the SRO drone wear armor, you use those rules as a baseline to determine a reasonable cost modifier for the character. Alternatively, you could work to create additional rules for purely mechanical characters modeled after item upgrade rules for AC, allowing a UPBs to be expended to upgrade the integral chassis armor.
