Using races from other Paizo books

Advice and Rules Questions

I have a question regarding race and the Paizo Compatibility License.

In the License, it mentions the only books that may be referenced are

Pathfinder® Second Edition Core Rulebook™ (PZO2101)
Pathfinder® Second Edition Bestiary™ (PZO2102)
Pathfinder® Second Edition Gamemastery Guide™ (PZO2103)
Pathfinder® Second Edition Bestiary 2™ (PZO2104)
Pathfinder® Second Edition Advanced Player's Guide™ (PZO2105)

I will note that this list is dated back to 2019, and Bestiary 3 isn't even listed here. (Will this ever be updated?)

But I would like to know how compatibility works with books published since 2019 in regards to race. Most of the unique races of PF2e have been added in subsequent books, such as the gnolls in Lost Omens: The Mwangi Expanse. Do references to races in these books fall under the Compatibility License?

It would be very awkward to have to remake these races for our own works, and try to not make them so similar to the original races, when it would be easier to simply refer to the races that already exist.

4 people marked this as a favorite.

Can't speak to the license itself but if you are going to be making content you should probably be using the PF2 nomenclature.

"Ancestry" not "Race".

If it's not on the list in black and white, it's not included.

Might we worthwhile reaching out to Paizo to find out if there is a release they could provide, or at least some insight, to help you with your development.
