I think the answer is a clear 'depends'
Further up north people probably don't have much experience with gnolls, so they are more likely to not know what they are dealing with in the first place
On the other hand if you are close to Osirion/Katepesh/Nex/Geb, there seems to be the territorry of the Gnolls who mostly worship Lamashtu, so they are probably not very popular around those parts.
Of you move over to the other half of Garund (Shackles, Mwangi Expanse, etc) they should know the more 'friendly' gnolls. Who are still practicioners of Endo-Cannibalism and highly practical in their way of thinking.
It is probably also a factor if you have to deal with simple peasents or better educated people. While the average peasent is most likely to throw a rock at something they don't like (or hide from it, depending on what they've heard) a noble might be curious about the strange creature, as would some more academic minded people.
And of course the last question is the party composition. A Gnoll travelling with a party consisting of rogues, shady looking alchemists and stubbly warriors is of course less likely to draw a positive reaction then a Gnoll travelling together with a noble knight and a fancy looking wizard.
Generally speaking - as long as they are with the group travelling through civilisation should not be a problem, complications may always occur.
Well, that's how I see it anyway

Very interesting.

The party composition would be a dwarf druid, a goblin sorcerer, a halfling rogue and a human ranger.
I, the one using the gnoll, are going to join the party along with my friend halfling rogue ( we workend on the bg together, in order to also making easy for the new characters to join ).
The gnoll I have in mind is an Ant Gnoll ( so a small one, probably less scary than a medium one ) Paladin ( yay! ) detective ( meant to solve crimes and fight for justice ).
Apart from legendary professional, I couldn't find anything meant to give the character some background reputation, so it's going to be a long road until then.
The idea was to make a good use of deception to disguise my appareance as a shoony or some similar small creature, knowing that the majority of the people ( mostly in small town or villages ) would probably react in a bad way seeing a gnoll, even though it would be together with more "normal" creatures.
Kinda bizarre, but still like the idea ;)
Finally, my dm told me he's probably going to face different people starting unfriendly with him rather than friendly, and some other might even be hostile, depends the situation.
...
Forgot to add that I thought that due to his size he could have been abandoned or even sold, resulting in living in a society rather than within a tribe. Still tweaking.

Ant Gnolls are kinda cute, Sometimes they habe to srgue to beeing taken for a real Gnoll, that might Work in your favour now and then
Considering you also have a gobbo in your Party people probably tend to be sceptical anyway (depends of course in the indiviual flavor of the Charakters)
Funnily enough as a Paladin your character might be the Most upstanding in the Party :P
But the warning of your hm seemed fair

TBH, the goblin will probably cop more flak than da cute little puppy.
A full-sized fanged menace, from a race that raids settlements and eats people, would probably be received notably less well, but Golarion is a world where people with clearly demonic features and demonic magic can find a place in civilised society, so *shrug*

Now I have a doubt.
Are Ant Gnoll supposed to be like puppies or just small gnolls?
I mean, though the size may lower their scary appareance, can't I do a scary look or savage look ( something which may intimidate people around him rather than making them love him ), can I?
I now have an image of a rabid chihuahua in plate armour with a divine aura.

And solving crimes ( detective background and dedication ).
Who let the gnoll out?
