Keep it cool.

Respect that despite what we might think there is a section of society that not only accepts attacking other sections of the same society as a valid technique.

Understand why this happens -- it's usually fear and a concern of being 'other'd' just as much as those fighting for recognition have to fight for every moment of their lives.

...and then Change that culture to one of acceptance, understanding, and wisdom.

Is it going to be hard?

Without a doubt, yes.

When we lessen ourselves by bringing others down, we accomplish nothing.

When we raise ourselves is when we can accept that people are different and that diversity is what brings us greater wisdom and understanding.

This is not an excuse to attack those we think are wrong, but encouragement to rise above, educate, and perhaps one day they will 'get it'.

My favourite part is that people legit think we want to boycott Paizo, when reading literally any of this should make it clear we just want employee rights. Good lord.

There are people in the world who believe that 'giving' people a 'decent wage' and 'decent working conditions' without 'killing themselves' to earn it is foolishness at best, heresy at worst.

These are also the sort of people when asked to pay an additional quarter percent sales tax on their luxury items grumble and grouse about how 'the government doesn't need that extra money'.

Ironically, if everyone had their 'dream job' and 'decent pay/living conditions' a lot of society's problems would evaporate.

My attention was called to recent matters.

First, I suspect Jeff Alvarez is not rightly placed as a villain here. He's likely a solid CFO turned President that has very clear marching orders on what to do with Paizo Inc under his custodianship. The doxxing on the forums is clearly not desirable behavior but this is Jeff's first turn steering the ship and these sorts of mistakes get made.

There is an overwhelming body of evidence that former Paizo employees are thrilled to have departed a toxic workplace. Beyond Sara and Diego, Liz shared her stories upthread and beyond the "founding group", most of the veterans have departed and Paizo is largely manned by those original ~10 or so employees and new, junior members. It's not a good sign when universally former employees dislike their former company so greatly.

Now, it's important to note that gaming (both video, like Blizzard of recent) and tabletop (Paizo) are like Hollywood. They easily fall into cultures of pseudo-slavery where you grab these young people enamored with the creative end product and you take advantage of them to fill the pockets of the investors/sponsors/shareholders. Hopefully truly horrible physical things are not happening behind closed doors, but the culture of exploitation is real and scary in its own right.

So let's roll this back to evidence over the years where Paizo has been shedding veteran (and potentially higher earning) employees, bringing in "fans" as staff, raising prices, lowering the work product quality, re-using content, etc. Books are printed in China, not the US or Canada where a "good company" would be trying to fulfill product and giving up some on margins to reward a Country with better ethical and climate standards. There's an obscure system to cancel orders, and probably somewhere in Paizo there are emails that suggest if they let people cancel subs easier they would collect 1%, 2% or some nominal lower revenue as gamers easily forgive receiving an extra shipment and paying for it. Yes, we gamers are very easily exploited by companies that master the art of gamifying experiences (whether that's logging in as a MAU/monthly active user or having to "collect it all" on Golarion source material).

The images of Lisa & Vic's home with potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars of Star Wars memorabilia and a movie theater are certainly telling. I would hypothesize that they, as owners, have a good chunk of a preferred stock in Paizo that is currently paying a dividend to support their lifestyle. And really, as Paizo's revenue has diminished from the peak there are demands that the revenue stream continues, at least until an acquirer of Paizo could be found. I'd further speculate original team members who I won't name but have weathered the full journey are reasonable holders of Common stock (behind a preference they may not fully understand) and are holding out with that ownership (and maybe even a little bit of royalties revenue themselves) that prevents their exit to greener pastures. There's citations to Paizo sticking with its current web stack relating to Vic's income when there's amazing low cost or open source alternatives.

Now, Jeff's doing some great work. The work with Owlcat to license Paizo IP into the Kingmaker and Wrath video games means pure revenue for Paizo. Very little marketing expense (none if they should choose, I imagine). No operations, customer care, fulfillment, etc. They could probably get by just giving Owlcat some time with James Jacobs from time to time. Now, you have "Unlimited" whereby anyone can write content in Golarion and Paizo collects their royalties. These are the kind of smart moves that setup a company at the stage in its life that Paizo is at in order to collect revenue without having to worry about its own direct employees or its own direct customers to manage. This transforms the company into a higher margin "machine" and with those higher margins comes a better valuation if they are seeking to sunset the company to enable the retirement of its shareholders.

As far as I can tell, the signs are all there by the evidence presented by folks here and on a handful of other forums.

The trick is the people who have poured all their blood sweat and tears into the company are truly more powerful than they realize. A union is impractical at this stage, but they are definitely able to take a weekend and meet up, set up a Kickstarter and seize on an opportunity themselves and understand the community supports them as individuals.

My understanding is that Lisa and Vic had their money mostly before founding Paizo. They're not necessarily losing money on it, but from what I've heard, it's not the main source of their apparently lavish lifestyle.

I'm not sure I'd go that far in describing Paizo, but the basic attitude is definitely at play. Despite the pay, the creative jobs in these companies aren't low end intro jobs that might lead to something better, they're dream jobs for a lot of gamers. Creative types will put up with a lot of crap and eat a lot of cheap ramen to be able to be creative doing something they love full time. That makes them easy to exploit financially and in other ways.

My main problem with this line of thinking is that the people "who have poured blood sweat and tears into the company"?

Those people are mostly the people that are now faced with allegations thrown at them. Those people built Paizo with their own hands and money and made everything possible in the first place. And several times they took substantial risks in doing things they had no real idea would work out the way they did (and that includes being inclusive at a time when basically no one else even thought about it).

I'm not saying that to excuse them from any wrongdoings. I just have a bit of a disconnect with the idea of the employees doing all the work while management and higher-ups are just sitting in their comfy chairs, counting the tons of money the earn by extorting the employes, cackling gleefully like Scrooge McDuck all the time. We're not talking about Hasbro, EA or Disney here.

To be fair, using that logic, we shouldn't be assuming that the leaders of Hasbro, EA, or Disney are maniacal examples of Dastardly Whiplash either. Very few corporate leaders are lazy comic book villains (there are exceptions of course).

I still think that Liz, Vic and Jeff care much more about their employees than any anonymous higher-up at Hasbro cares about those at WoTC. Apart from that, I was obviously using a bit of hyperbole, you're right about that.

Just as you might about the higher-ups at Hasbro. They are all people. Just because they've been nice to you does not necessarily mean they've been nice as employers.

I believe this is something Price was pretty consistently advocating against, considering she was one of the figures behind implementing a blind test system for new hires.

"You need a specialized skillset to do this." and "Paizo sometimes appoints undeserving people." aren't mutually exclusive, especially considering we're currently discussing her frustration with the appointment of an in-her-eyes underqualified candidate.

So, just as a reminder to everyone: Basically every allegation Jessica Price has made has either been contextualized as "partially true, but she phrased it a bit sensationally" or fully confirmed by other employees and ex-employees. Jessica Price was the one to actually set all this off by speaking out, but even if you discredit her--which is a tall order, because Jessica Price has been accused of a lot of things, but never lying outright--most of the biggest problems are still right there in front of you, corroborated by 2-4 other people broadly liked and trusted.

I know people who love telling me how little they like Jessica who are prepared to believe large portions of her accounts because either they don't think she'd lie outright about it (because "I dislike this person" and "I think this person is a liar" are actually very different positions), they have seen evidence that supports the accounts, or other employees have simply confirmed them.

Only a very small minority continues to insist that this all the work of one sinister Tweeter. They do this because they know Jessica Price is one of the most polarizing figures to ever work for Paizo, for many reasons we don't have time to get into today, and they find it easier to brush all of this off if they continue to insist it's just Jessica ruining everything. But it's not.

Not true! I have long supplied drinks for a certain North of the Border Paizo employee. Has my name ever graced the list of authors? Reader, it has not. Based on the amount of booze consumed, I should be challenging Vaughn for writing for every AP. But am I? Reader, no I am not.

And it's not just that one person, either! Oh no. The number of beverages shared with the dinosaur wranglers in the warehouse should count for something. But does it? You'd think they'd allow me to schlep an order or three, but noooooooooo.

Well, it was (and still is) a stressful time, and it concerns me how many nurses are threatened by burnout and think about leaving their job (not that burnout hasn't been a thing before, but Covid certainly doesn't help.

Also doesn't help that it's only a vast majority of medical professionals advocating for it. I just had a huge argument with my ex-wife about our son getting vaccinated (and that was his decision) because her pediatrist had told her that "she should let other people experiment with her children before doing it with her own kids". The thought alone that a "medical professional" would argue that way makes me sick to my stomach.

And I have colleagues working at the same University hospital emergency station that I do, that have outrightly denied to get vaccination for reasons that you generally only hear from QAnon members. And that is working in a field where you sometimes work under extreme time pressure only to find out someone is infected after initial treatment (and higher-ups being completely unwilling to put money in adequate protective measures). Vaccination would be the easiest way to protect yourself and your loved ones, but still they deny it.

Ok, sorry for me venting a bit, back to the topic please :)

So far I have done a lot of what I consider mediating and contextualizing in these debates, or simply sharing my feelings on matters, rather than really diving into "action plans". It's easier than talking about what I actually want, not least because talking about what I want is a tad more vulnerable to nitpicking and practical criticisms.

That said, I do think we should move away from arguing for its own sake and towards something more constructive, and I'm tired of getting lumped in with some (as far as I can tell) mythical "Bring me the heads of every staffer!" fringe. So, yeah, here's what I want from Paizo and what I personally plan to do about it.

What I Want:
Realistically, Paizo is limited in their ability to comment on the firing of Sara Marie, same as they were that other time we were all here arguing on very opposite sides about someone else, as I dimly recall. Paizo also operates on limited funds, so simply demanding Erik Mona take a pay cut to boost everyone else's salaries isn't an option, unless the owners and CEO take a way bigger cut than we've been led to believe. I will also refrain from talking too much about what is genuinely my best-case scenario, which would be Lisa Stephens helping to transition the company she has largely retired from anyways to workplace democracy, making it an employee-owned cooperative.

Item One: A Union
First off, appointing someone at HR, finally, is a good step. I would very much like to see Paizo employees take the step of establishing some form of union. I think that's a difficult hurdle for such a familial company, but I honestly just think every company should have one. It might have protected Sara Marie from what appears to have been an impulse termination. If the leadership is serious about wanting to do better, they should expressly endorse any pursuit of unionization, if the employees want to try it. I'm not going to tell the employees what they should want. A union, though, is basically HR's counterpart. One is incomplete without the other.

Item Two: Salaries
As the OP stated, salaries should be posted for transparency, as is swiftly becoming the law in many states. That's actually just smart business on Paizo's part--do it before Washington state decides to mandate it.

Be transparent about why salaries are so low, and then work with the employees and the community to find ways to change it. I'd take a $3 increase if I knew everyone at Paizo was earning a living wage. The current system isn't sustainable, and everyone seems to know it. Paizo employees are in a constant struggle simply to afford to work at Paizo. This limits Paizo's access to talent, as employees flee for bigger, safer companies to work for and prospective employees are forced to turn them down.

I have a feeling management has been aware of this problem for a while. I want to see it treated as the crisis that it really is. Above all, if Paizo's employees have been willing to work for such low salaries for so long, Paizo seems to be basically surviving in spite of its fundamental unprofitability--it has only survived by paying less than the labor is worth. So I would like to know whether the higher-ups would be prepared to do the same, depending on how much they're making. How much do they really care about the company?

If Paizo is paying its employees like a nonprofit, it should at least act a bit more like one, which is to say...

Item Three: Workplace Democracy
Look, I said I wouldn't talk about it too much. I'm just saying, there's really no reason for a small, friendly company like Paizo not to consider a cooperative structure--obviously being mindful of limits to avoid the system getting too convoluted. The owners have essentially retired, and Paizo isn't publicly traded. There's no real obstruction I can see to officially giving everyone working there at least some say in how things should work.

This and #5 alone would genuinely make me trust Paizo again. I stopped buying products the first time bad stuff stated leaking. If Paizo could honestly show that everyone was making about the same, that the company was genuinely doing its best, I'd believe it, and I'd want to go buy some sourcebooks. I miss buying sourcebooks.

I'm not super serious about this, but I thought I'd mention it because, y'know, it is a technically viable option that would settle most doubts.

Item Four: Accountability
Let's be honest; if some of the worst allegations leveled at Paizo management are true, they will never hire an arbitration company to investigate any of this. But... well, if the allegations are true, and Paizo does nothing to cover it up, I don't really want to support them anyways.

If Paizo genuinely wants this community to feel safe and healthy again, hire someone impartial to look into matters, and hold people accountable. Or, you know, Paizo could do this themselves. This might mean some turnover in management, or just some people coming forward, apologizing sincerely, and making meaningful, identifiable changes to avoid the issues happening again. However, public apologies are probably not likely, since Paizo doesn't comment on a lot of internal stuff publicly, so let's go witt the arbitration.

Item Five: Transphobia
The way Crystal Frasier was treated sickened me. Screw all my being reasonable and saying public apologies aren't likely. I want someone to come forward and talk frankly about what happened, why it happened, and how they will guarantee it never happens again. This shouldn't be hard. And if it is, I honestly don't care. Call me unreasonable, call me a pitchfork-bearing mob--I believe I have carried myself respectfully enough on these boards the past few days to feel untouched by those barbs. This is about what would make me willing to patronize this company again.

If Paizo isn't a safe place of employment for my transgender siblings, I don't want s!@& to do with them anymore. I'm sorry. I just can't cross that line in myself.

Item Six: Blind Hiring
I want Paizo to go back and guarantee, publicly, that they will continue using a version of Jessica Price's and Wes Schneider's blind test for new hires. If that's the system that gave us employees like Amanda and Crystal, it's the system I want to know they're using.

What I'll Do:

Realistically, I can think of three ways to achieve all this, and one would require the action of Paizo employees. You can probably guess what it would look like. That said, I want to once again stress that I have nothing but love and support for the hard efforts of Paizo's developers and editors and artists, in general, everyone working there in general under such pressure right now. I don't know what their situations are and I am certainly not here to demand they take action in what may be a very complicated situation for them. So that's one way, but it's not one I'm calling for.

So, the second option. A boycott is the obvious choice, but there are problems. Boycotts need to be pretty well-organized, need to run along a short-term, high-pressure span, and ideally need to involve more than simply not buying the products. This is to say, "we won't buy Amazon for one day" or "oh, I try not to shop at Walmart"? Not effective boycotts. We'd probably need to start calling our FLGS's and putting pressure on them to drop support for Paizo until the situation improves, keeping this controversy alive across the forums and beyond, and refusing to touch anything Paizo produces.

A boycott will hurt the employees, too, not just the management. Would it be effective? I mean, probably. Game design companies are ridiculously fragile. Like, enough that I yell at people who pirate TTRPG products, even from companies I dislike. Those who say a boycott wouldn't do anything because Paizo is like Blizzard are... well, naive, to say the least, about Paizo's role as an economic powerhouse.

That said, should we do a boycott? I don't support that at this time.

A truly effective boycott needs to be supported by the ex-employees at bare minimum. So far, none of them that I know of have endorsed one. This isn't to say I'm going to buy from Paizo, but I don't see that abstinence as a boycott, just a personal choice for my own sense of self. I don't think a boycott is appropriate.

The third option is pretty simple. Paizo may be a corporation, but it's also a community, and the one feeds off the other. As far as I'm concerned, they have done potentially irreparable harm to Paizo as a community space and as a brand. That brand is important to Paizo's long-term success, and I currently see the brand as an absolute joke.

Beyond damaging Paizo economically, the best thing we can do is simply continue to make a fuss.

Honestly, making a fuss is the most productive thing we can do right now. We can hope that those running Paizo begin to feel a moral pressure to take more serious action, but we can also hope that they begin to realize that the damage to their brand as a progressive, friendly company will not go away. Send weekly emails to the leadership, keep discussing this in other threads, and keep demanding action. Keep Tweeting. Keep telling your friends. Keep making the thought of Paizo an uncomfortable subject rather than the source of good, progressive vibes it wants to be.

tl;dr: I want to see everything the OP brought up, plus explicit acknowledgement of transphobia, reinstatement of the "blind hiring" system Price and Schneider introduced, and, you know, exploration of workplace democracy sure would be neat. I think the only path to maybe achieving this is just continuing to allow this to stain the Paizo brand by talking about it, which, while very limited as a form of protest, is the only thing we really have power to do at this time.

Those who eagerly declare our efforts to be futile, either out of cynical nihilism or outright opposing our goals, can continue to do so. I don't think they recognize what our goals actually are.

I want to like Paizo. I want to be on the company's side here. I grew up with this company, and much as my inner socialist wants to condemn every company in existence, that same inner socialist also reminds me that every company is simply the sum of its parts (albeit formulated into a shape I politically oppose). I want Paizo to be better.

The action I take here isn't naivete--I know the odds are slim. It's just... all I can really do. So telling me it won't work means nothing to me. Until you have a better idea, I'll just keep right on doing this. Because Paizo is too important for me to just abandon completely.

As a sidenote, Tholok and their crew are actually doing us a deceptively great service by keeping these threads lively. We want people to find these threads, after all, to learn what Paizo did and keep what little pressure there is on. It makes it easier in the hours when I'm not able to post that I know there'll always be someone around to poke and prod. Obviously, I wish they would be more civil and productive when they do, but I am always the type to seek silver linings. :)

Right? It's like a sitcom episode where the Paizo Golem, in a fit of melodramatic pique, wailed, "I wish I'd never hired that Customer Carebear!" Be careful what you wish for!

Oh, also, I do want to say that I don't really want anyone's heads, because I don't see justice as a punitive creature at all. Accountability is about acknowledging the injustice and seeking ways to amend it. I take some of the allegations against people like Jeff and Tonya fairly seriously, and it scans as being very likely that some people in leadership genuinely bear some serious responsibility for the problems we're discussing. Whoever was behind Crystal Frasier not being sent to conventions, for example, should face appropriate, measured consequences for their actions, because that's a tool with which Paizo can show that transgender employees are not expendable and mistreating them has the same consequences as mistreating any other employee.

All that said, this is likely a combination of personal and systemic problems, and you can't solve it all just by punishing the Bad Guys. I don't know if anyone deserves to be fired. It's quite possible, though, that some people should no longer have managerial power over others, because someone who abuses their power shouldn't be allowed to keep it.

It's not about decapitation, it's about disarmament. Anybody who mistakes the one for the other likely sees power over others as an intrinsic right, rather than a privilege.

I just want the employees to be treated fairly and not discriminated against, and also compensated properly for their efforts among other things (like cutting back on crunch time, hiring more diverse voices, etc) and I KNOW paizo has the potential and ability to do better, I want to actually see them do it. Pathfinder, Golarion and the stories told within this game and world mean a lot to me and many others. The people who actually make these things and who work hard to ship them to us, answer our questions, etc all deserve to be treated better.

Okay everyone, I'm opening this back up, but if I have to lock it again, it is going to stay locked. I'm going to try a different approach this time and see if it helps. Before you post, read it again before you hit the submit button. Twice. Then walk away for 20 minutes and come back again before you decide to actually submit your words. Consider whether or not you really need to engage/bicker/argue with someone. If you still think that what you have to say is worth posting, take one more minute to spare a thought for us here in customer service that have to read through everything, often more than once when flags pop up. If you STILL feel that what you have to say is worth posting, maybe think about whether or not continually going down that road will get you suspended.
