Underwater familiars

Advice

So, which familiars are better for underwater campaigns? (Preferably, ones that can breath indefinitely underwater.)

I'm running an Undine water element bloodline tattooed sorcerer with a water mephit improved familiar in a Skull and Shackles game right now and loving it.

Before getting improved familiar, I had a valet monkey and just kept him in the tattoo when underwater.

The elemental archetype can be used for any familiar though. The water subtype can give it a swim speed and amphibious.

If you want something that can manipulate items, it's hard to do better than the octopus.

I didn't build her for an underwater campaign, but my undine white-haired witch has a king crab for the +2 bonus to grapple checks. She's been lugging him around in an aquarium ball since 1st level, but you wouldn't need that for a completely underwater campaign.

And you should definitely consider the Shapeless Familiar feat to give your familiar a second form in case your campaign leaves the water later on.

Thanks for the suggestions. Octopus sounds nice. Yep, most of the adventure will take place underwater from what we have been told. Since the aquarium ball wa mentioned, I started wondering if there Are any feats, items or arquetypes that I should consider getting for the familiar for thi mostly underwater game.

Depending on how big your octopus is (I'm going to assume tiny), you might consider getting an Aquarium Ball at some point so you can take your familiar with you for the 10-15% of the campaign that takes place on land.

Aquarium Ball

Price 80 gp; Weight 20 lbs.

This clear, 1-inch-thick glass orb is the size of a large melon and hangs from a thick chain. It can hold up to 2 gallons of freshwater or saltwater, allowing it to house aquatic creatures such as fish or frogs. The cap near the top of the ball can be unscrewed for access. One Tiny creature or two Diminutive creatures can fit comfortably into an aquarium ball. The water within the orb must be changed daily in order to keep the creatures within alive. Otherwise, the inhabitants begin to slowly suffocate.

I would suggest an Ioun Wyrd. They are very good familiars in general - blindsight + flight is a strong combo. As constructs, they don't breathe. Finally, their owner benefit is +1 to AC (Natural Armor), which isn't terrible...
