Can we get pdfs of the April stuff? I have players ready to play ruby Phoenix next week.

Moving the release date moves when the PDFs will become available. If we put the PDFs up for sale now, but retailers and distributors don't have the physical product to sell, it would negatively impact their businesses and our professional relationships with them, and potentially our own physical sales.

I apologize if I'm speaking out of turn. Before I talk, I want to emphasize I have NO knowledge of paizo's shipments, but logistics is my work nowadays.

...

From my perspective (general ocean logistics background, not specific to your shipment without knowing what vessel it was on), what you've been describing does sounds like an inspections delay. I've had shipments get caught up in customs like that before. My absolute blind guess, based soley on what you've been able to share with us, is that the container likely failed initial inspection in some way (usually, sadly, just a paperwork issue), and they're waiting on another slot for a second inspection. Or possibly third, if there actually was a problem.

Sometimes there's no problem at all though, and your container gets randomly flagged for a big inspection that can take a long time to complete.

My understanding is that for this situation it is the latter. April items seem to be caught in a random intense/more thorough inspection. We've had a few updates to let us know our stuff is still in line, but they haven't seen much movement in the queue so far. I hesitated to get too into details as I don't want anyone to think ill of the Port of Seattle folks, or of the inspectors. They're just trying to do their jobs, too! I appreciate your insight into global logistic though, the more I learn the more fascinating I find it.

Good friend of mine studied TV and radio production in college. He ended up a police dispatcher. I studied physics and nuclear engineering and ended up a navy officer (not a nuke). :-)

Eh, you gotta learn the quirks of every new position anyway. Breaking computers doesn't help you understand why the POS system isn't sending orders to the kitchen any faster. Even in the Army, every new unit had their own systems to absorb and support.

I never went to college I worked my way up from dishwasher to sous chef and head baker at a bakery.

Then I switched careers, and discovered I loved it, worked my way up to Foreman and then switched to stay at home dad and worked nights at Toys R Us until they closed and then picked up where I left off and I'm now a Lead Foreman and one of the best stone cutters in the US.

Have a buddy who got a job programming Micros systems, he both loved and hated it. But it got him his foot into the door at a large seller of dirt water (Starbucks) and made a career out of it in the end.

I am very interested in these kinds of cause and effects. If you don't mind sharing, I'd love to know what podcast/episode if it is one that is covering the issues from the Suez Canal blockage.

I don't have much insight into why the container(s) with April items are taking longer, if the Suez Canal issue caused a back up with port inspections, or if its just a delay with inspections, etc. I'm super curious of course, I just don't have eyes on that kind of information.

It is the Bob and Sherri show. It was like 2 weeks back.

After talking things over and looking at what has arrived and what we expect to be ready for June, we settled on a product list for the April & May releases of items that we have in our warehouse, as well as a tentative group of products for June.

I know that this mix of products and when they hit may be very disruptive for some subscribers, and my team is prepared to do our best to help people figure out how to make this situation work out. My team will be updating this thread as well as the tentative one for June today & tomorrow and I will be writing up a email to subscribers to let them know what products we plan to create orders for on Thursday (May 13th).

The good news (I hope) for subscribers is that the Starfinder Galaxy Exploration Manual dropped to our warehouse earlier than we expected and will be part of the April/May release.

The release date will be June 2nd, order creation on May 13th, shipping from May 17-28.

Another delay for the first part of fists of the ruby phoenix? oh come on!
I'm sorry but i'm really upset about this by now. I know that Paizo has its reason for when they ship what. But delay upon delay for a finished product (the pdf) just to keep brick&mortar stores happy is for a customer who buys directly from you a bad experience.

And for me who is a first time subscriber, who hoped to get the pdf version early (as i heared those who sub get them on occasion a few days earlier) it's disappointing as it not only affects me, but my whole playgroup who were so fired up to start with it.

vent over

I really hope Paizo learns from this and plans a contingency for their customers if something like this happens again in the future

Thanks for the update Sara Marie. It's been an interesting twelve months or so, that's for sure, but I'm not going to be upset about getting a few books two months later than expected. With the state the world is currently in, it's a very minor thing, and we're fortunate if this is the worst thing going on in our lives right now.

Stay safe everybody.

It sucks I know, but Paizo's relationship w B&M stores around the world is way more important to their continued solvency as a company. They could backstab their loyal shop owners and we would get our PDFs now... and that would be great, but I also want paizo to continue to make great content for my games another few decades at least, so I'm happy to trade a little disappointment now for more content later.

They are also being WAY more transparent about this than any other gaming company I can think of. Could you imagine Games Workshop telling you your products were late because they were stuck in customs and which particular products from the partial lists were going to show up when?

My players are going to be able to take ancestries/feats/stuff from the Lost Omens: Mwangi Expanse book now.

I'll be tempted to hold off and let them take a Magus (or summoner I suppose) from Secrets of Magic too if they really wanted!

Paizo is indeed more transparent with their issue and they are overall most forthcoming with a lot of things.

Yet i'm relatively new to pathfinder, started with 2e and bought so far everything via pdf. So i have no attachments to b&m stores for this. And given the state of the world for the last year, increased online sales would be Paizos biggest income right now and going forward i guess. As it would saving them the cost for printing, shipping and storage.
So i can not agree that b&m are important for their future.

Being outside the US and not having any b&m store around for TTRPGs and similar stuff might color my view differently on this.

Context makes a big difference on this topic. Brick and Mortar are more than just a way to make sales for Paizo, and other game distributors. It is a way for people to come together and play the games and gets word of mouth out about them. Having their products on the shelves of the Brick and Mortar is more than just sales, and always will be.

Don't get me wrong, saving money by direct sales of PDF's to the masses is the future. But without Brick and Mortar having events and games being ran all around the world there would be fewer eyes on the product, fewer customers. It's more than just loyalty, it is business strategy.

While I have angst about not getting my hands on a product, I fully accept and acknowledge there wouldn't BE a product without the customer engagement at the B&M stores. Over time this may change, but I doubt it. That is why the Society events are as popular and wide spread as they are. This game is about bringing personalities to a table and having fun. Some of us do it with our families and friends but a lot do it with strangers at events too.

Welcome to the community, 2e is a fantastic product, but the legacy of B&M isn't going anywhere any time soon and I am grateful for the friendly local game stores that help support Paizo

I want to point out here:
Paizo has repeatedly stated that getting the PDFs early is not a subscriber perk and nowhere listed as such.
It is a consequence of their shipping system and they are happy to keep it that way for customers. But noone is guaranteed to get the PDF early.

And thanks for the updates. Phew, 5 AP volumes next month. Quite an order.
But I am happy to grab the Galaxy Exploration Manual PDF end of the month. With my Iron Gods campaign going towards the finish line, I can start looking into what to GM next.

So, delays are always disappointing but none of this is Paizo's fault and I'm taking a couple of massive positives from this.

Firstly, Galaxy Exploration Guide is coming early so I get something in May.

And secondly, June's shipment for me will have five AP volumes in it (including the whole Fists of the Ruby Pheonix AP!) and Malevolence and the Mwangi Expanse book. I am going to enjoy that when it arrives.

Keep powering through this Paizo. Looking forward to my next two shipments whenever they land.

Just pull out the money you had set aside for the April and May shipments to make sure you don't spend it before June comes around.

Its not just that, the shipping cost sometimes feels like it grows exponentially when you add enough books :'D

To be clear, delaying the PDF release until the physical product can also be released is a decision that is not just about brick & mortar retailers. While it does have influence, that is one of many factors and considerations.

I can imagine the angst that might have been caused by a premature release of a PDF of the Absalom book last year. Sales of a book whose full PDF was released a couple of years ago would undoubtedly suffer.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Sara Marie,
Please pass on my thanks for all the information you've provided. As an SF subber, I'm much more happy to get GEM a month late and since SF APs are going bi-monthly, well, I'll just used to that a sequence early. As a business owner, customers can't and won't agree or support every business decision we make. What they need to understand is that the leadership in a company will do what they think is best for the company, at the time, with the information at hand. I respect that. Keep up the great work.

I understand that Paizo feel they have to delay the release of digital products for a number of reasons, but I can't help but wonder whether those reasons are actually worth the potential alienation of consumers that not releasing digital products when the physical product is so heavily delayed entails. Obviously I don't have insight to the data that Paizo have, but I for one am feeling like my confidence in Paizo's ability to deliver a product is shaken, which won't be easily restored. I planned to start Fists of the Ruby Phoenix in April, then May... and now it's been delayed to July I don't know if I should plan around Paizo product releases at all! After all, what happens if we get to July and it gets delayed AGAIN?
To clarify: I like Paizo products a lot. They're consistently high quality and that level of quality paired with their frequency of release used to be the biggest selling point for their systems. But between the Absalom book being delayed, what, two years plus? And now this? I don't know. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Paizo make it extremely hard to get hyped for their upcoming releases when we don't even know if they'll ever actually get released.

That's a different situation. The April releases are done, so the delay is down to logistics. If Paizo wanted to, they could release the PDFs (though I completely understand that they have compelling reasons not to). The Absalom book, on the other hand, was delayed because Erik Mona needed more time to write it. Last info I heard was that it was in editing, and the optimistic predictions were for a November or December release. For Absalom, there is no PDF to release, unless you think they should release Erik Mona's draft.

Delays suck, but put in perspective?

Disney has delayed a number of Marvel movies, at least one for over a year at this point. If the biggest and baddest entertainment company in history has to delay films in one of if not the most successful film franchises ever...

It's hitting everybody these days. Paizo really have hummed along incredibly well, all things told. Looking forward to shipping unsnarling and (hopefully) the world easing up into a post-pandemic rhythm, but I'm finding it really easy to be patient with people doing their best in weird circumstances.

Gonna be an expensive month in June. Some people do have to budget for these things and it is not enough to tell them to just save what they would in April and May to pay for June, in addition to June.
