Mystic and heavy armour

Advice

I currently have a Mystic at level 4. Her Dex is low at 12.
In the early games her ACs were in the toilet and even with level 4 armour its not so great. At level 5 I am considering getting Heavy armour Proficiency. I just want peoples opinion on the idea.
My main concern is the speed reduction you get with heavy armour and her ability to get to people who need healing

Stamina is the primary defense in starfinder rather than AC. Past level 3 are you finding yourself needing to make a lot of clutch hit point heals? It's not been my experience that such is necessary outside of boss fights.

It really depends on where you find yourself most fights. Are you on the front lines with the melee? Or are you hanging back and slinging spells?

If you're on the front lines regularly heavy armor should help, if not then lower AC should be fine if you plan on finding and using cover when you can.

I attempt to stay at my best range (80ft) to fire my weapon but our Tank (Armor storm Vesk) likes to punch targets so I do get dragged in closer, depending on the success of the enemies. I found most of the enemies tend to have a good AB so our softer targets do take some damage

I'd definitely plan on upping your CON at level 5 when you get there kjust for more tankiness. If you're showing up in melee round 3 or 4 I think I'd prefer the move speed of light armor, since it's going to be difficult to keep your armor up to date. However, if there aren't any other feats you're eyeing, taking heavy armor prof and switching to whatever gets you the highest AC when you find it is viable too.

Cheers for the advice. I was considering Spell focus or maybe fleet if I didn't go heavy armour.

You may also want to have your GM consider allowing the Solar Connection epiphany to grant the solar armor manifestation instead of a solar weapon.

With Dex of 12, I'd definitely go for heavy armor.

If the speed penalty bothers you, get a speed suspension augmentation to keep up.

At level 5, you're also nearing the level where you should seriously consider a jet pack, which gives you fly 30' speed regardless of land speed.

Sounds like my mystic. I got heavy armor from Star Knight, so I had it starting at 2nd level, but the extra Con at 5 was a big deal. Before then I was dropping multiple times a fight, even in heavy armor. Mk1 upgrade is now in Con as well. Between those two increases that's effectively an extra hit I can take from whatever. My armor is nothing special right now, but I'm glad I have it instead of light armor since my Dex is garbage anyway.

Enhanced resistance at 7 has also helped a ton. I actually put off getting my first upgrade so I could get a speed suspension, and once we found a jetpack it improved my mobility significantly. So all of that is really good stuff.

Well to update people, my Mystic now has heavy armour training and is in Lashunta ringwear Mk 2, Salvage from an enemy our Mechanic will retool to her frame. Haven't used her with her new armour yet but I am looking hopeful

The only thing I would caution is to watch your encumbrance. Some of the better armor upgrades (deflective reinforcement, jetpack/forcepack) have one or more bulk. When you add in the bulk of the armor it's easy to get to over half your strength score and encumbered.
