What Special Qualities should I give my Homebrew Hag?

Homebrew and House Rules

so I wasn't feeling any of the flavors of Hag (Blood, Night, Mute) and my Party's APL is 11 so I'm throwing them a CR 11 Encounter, where this hag will try to sell them some somewhat beneficial but ultimately cursed items, and she doesn't take window shoppers well lol. They will be outside a necropolis so I went with a necromancy/Void type of hag, her stat block below. Lemme know your ideas as to her special abilities :)

So, I guess tell us more about how you envision the creature. Does she craft the cursed items herself, or just collect them? If she makes them, she needs an appropriate feat or special ability.

By Necromancy, do you mean the traditional undead oriented stuff or curses? A gaze attack or witch hexes are appropriate and fun. Evil eye, misfortune, etc. Don't get too carried away without increasing CR, however.

Giving her special abilities that focus on the cursed items, like delaying curse or jinxing items (see Gremlin abilities) is not a bad idea.

But yeah, beyond statblock, the more information you can give the better.

Mechanically, she comes off as a fairly generic hag with some deliciously vicious SLA's.

I'd suggest adding a rider (curse, disease, elemental damage, fear, poison, etc) to either her claws or bite.

Maybe give her some specific magic items - not stat boosting stuff, but wands, scrolls, elixirs, potions, and weird wondrous items.

I invision her as a collector, but I might give her the ability to Necrograft, i mean necromancy as in curses, and debuffs like disease and poison, etc as they are already gonna be in an undead heavy area and gonna be fighting a lot of traditional necromancers in the future. For the most part she's a traditional caster unlike some hags that have more melee ability. My thought is she comes from the astral plane hence the void theme and subtype and is more into tricking people into bad purchases to cause them misery and spreads poison and disease. I've since decided to make it a CR 12 encounter and give her an imposing hooded Advanced Stone Giant companion which will stand in the shop as a bouncer of sorts.

So you'd have to decrease its CR from 11 to 9 (or increase the CR of the encounter to 13) but an Ash Giant would be on theme as a bodyguard.

You could also give her bite energy drain (1 level, she's not a melee type).

Her connection to the Astral Plane could give her abilities similiar to Astral Projection or allow her to interact with the Silver Cords. Heck, she might be Astral Projecting to the material plane.

Change shape- most hags have an ability to alter and/or disguise self. Its kind of a signature part of what makes a hag is being able to disguise as a beautiful young woman to fool people, then revealing themselves to shock and terrify.

My players are sadly a bunch of straight laced dude who aren't fooled by the lure of a curvaceous lady (I have pulled that one one them a few times now lol) I intentionally want her to look like an old crone

Doesn't have to be a "oh no, the sexy lady is actually a scary monster" cliche. She could just hide the more monstrous aspects of her nature, seeming less threatening, more trustworthy, and gaining an edge if violence breaks out.

Seconded. I mean, what's more non-threatening than a sweet old grandmother type?

So she's a peddler from the Astral Plane. Maybe her shop is also a wagon-boat that sails the astral seas, and maybe it's a big ol' animated object?

What sort of things is she selling?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

An old lady who sells only cursed items? Interesting.

since it's a homebrew, i would add the ability to become incorporeal and back (seem to fit with the necro\void type).
nothing say 'don't mass with this shady person' then him (or her) popping out behind the characters through a wall (in fact she should not be using doors or pathways at all. going in and out the walls, floor and ceiling) it also provide a fast getaway (through the floor if needed) in case things go very wrong for her.

i would also advice to include some kind of volubility that she hides to balance things. say she replaced her blood (or an other organ) in her body and hid it, and if she is close to it (or it is brought close to her) she looses some (or all) of her abilities or get severe penalties.
