I hadn't meant visually the Barbed Spear resembled a 2H Trident, I meant purely mechanically.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I suppose. I was more making the Spear a 2hander, but sure. Same thing, more or less.

Actually those two weapons are great, as they show exactly how valuable the transition from Simple to Martial is, as they are identical aside from their weapon die.

And I just realized how to redo the Barbed Spear:

Barbed Spear
Price 1gp Damage1d8 pBulk 1
Hands 1
Category Martial
Group Spear Traits Two-hand d12
A common weapon among seafarers, this weapon resembles a slightly larger and heavier spear with either barbs or hooks along the bottom of the spearhead.

I'm assuming you meant to have it have the Thrown trait when not used in two-hand or no?

No actually. I left the thrown trait in there yesterday, but that was out of laziness as much as anything. The important bits were the d12, piercing, and non-reach. So a spear that hits harder with 2 hands works, much like a bastard sword.

Except, you know, pointy.

Plus a d12 thrown weapon probably does hit one of Paizo's walls. The harpoon I'd leave thrown and tethered though.

One reason I like the boar-sword (as a d12 piercing weapon more than any type of spear is that spears, are by nature, extensible- haft size is only limited by "how tall do trees get?"

Whereas if the weapon is a leaf shaped blade above a bar (to keep the impaled creature from riding up it) attached to a strengthened length of non-sharp steel you can grip up on, if you need to, you kind of can't make that of arbitrary length (a quench tank can only be so large).

Considering that the biggest damage die for any existing thrown weapon is a d8 (trident) I'm not so sure about these.

I'm struggling to understand why with this system.

Thrown or Missile weapons are not superior because there will often be a lesser cover bonuses involved when you are firing into melee. I understand that there is an action economy benefit in that you normally have more actions to strike as you can often move less. But even so I don't see why ranged weapons can't be that bit stronger.

My question would be: why isn't there some sort of "Charge" trait in PF2, to give a bonus to charging or being set for a charge? Yes I now that charge is not an action as such, but they managed to get it to work with "Joust".

But I wouldn’t be able to have an Icy Barbed Spear, let alone an Icier Barbed Spear, without Barbed Spear.

And that just won’t do.

Yet

Actually I’m curious what new traits they’ll come up with. I’m sure there will be some. Only so many combinations available at the moment.
