Also, if you just trying to be invisible, cast spells and move so your enemy doesn’t know where you are as a tactical thing, don’t bother casting silently. Cast and then sneak.

Not exactly true. You Sneak at half movement. With 25ft. of Speed (the most common one) you end up at 10ft. from the point where you cast your spell. So just target that point with a Glitterdust/Faerie Fire and the caster's detected.

Casting silently pushes you to stay still, but at least you can really stay hidden.

As a combat tactic, and not a narrative objective, Getting an enemy caster to spend 2 actions to cast glitter dust just to possibly make one character in the party visible is probably a big win for the party as a whole though. Personally, I absolutely love silent spell and I think it is one of the best Wizard feats in the game, but it is much more about narrative control than combat power, and I am ok with that.

Also, it is important to realize just how important boosts to spd are. Between feats and spells getting that movement to 30ft of more can be a huge tactical advantage, this being one of the more niche and least common ones.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I don't think we will ever see enough enemies with counters like glitterdust.

It's mostly a player prerogative to bring a balanced setup to counter stuff like invisibility, concealing, elemental damage and so on, though since I usually laugh at the ridiculous spell list paizo gave to the majority of enemies, I tend to properly modify it as a normal spellcaster should do.

For the same reason, I either forbid longstrider wands or simply increase by 10 feet the enemy speed to. It's incredible how a party abusing of a single skill feat can obliterate enemies with action economy ( and without a trade off, because a trainded skill and a skill feat is not a trade off for 10 feet speed ).

Ok, so can't remain unnoticed... though, I guess cast + sneak works.

I thought you needed to use the Hide action before you were permitted to Sneak.

Though I suppose invisibility works just as well.

If you really want to spec for stealth casting, then with fast sneak and foil senses you can cast invisibility and sneak 30 feet away pretty easy on turn 1. From there you'll need to succeed at skill checks to stay unobserved but it is theoretically possible. And if you get spotted you can always sneak again.

I don't know how often this will actually be relevant to PCs in combat though. Generally that means leaving your allies to get mauled. But it can a be a strong narrative tool.

I do this all the time, and since my allies go out of their way to tank for the party casters anyways, my actions actually end up alleviating a great deal of their burdens.

You can also move after a two action spell. Or cast invisibility before a fight begins so you aren't wasting in combat actions.
