So what happens here? Do you get one familiar with 2 abilities and another with 1 or do you get one familiar with 3 abilities?......I'm building a human staff nexus universalist wizard/witch/scroll trickster for UBER SLOTS and I'm wondering if taking the familiar early will lead to a 3 ability familiar after the witch dedication

Since you are taking the Witch dedication, it would appear to be reasonable to interpret it being one less ability than the normal familiar FOR A WITCH (which would be 2 abilities until you take the feat that removes the reduction). Also, It would make sense thematically as getting the extra ability of a witch familiar at 6th level etc.

If I understand the entry correctly, you get 2 cantrips AND an a third from the familiar with the witch dedication. in essence the reduced familiar is basically hardwired to give you the cantrip ability.

This has me thinking about the same situation with Witch and a Leaf Order Druid.
Can a Leaf Order Druid retrain out of their Order feat?
There probably ought to be some sort of errata to the dedication that says "if you already have a familiar from any other source, the Witch familiar replaces that and you get the Enhanced Familiar feat for free".
